My 9 year old patient was raped and required surgery

Published

I currently have a 9 year old girl I am taking care of on unit. She was raped resulting in surgical repair to entire pelvic floor and also needed a colostomy. As I change her sheets and such I just don't know what to do. I cry everytime I walk in there. I just want to hold her. She isn't allowed visitors and she is so scared. My heart is breaking. Any advice?

Thanks to all. She is doing well. She had somewhat of a rough night, but after some pain med adjustments she's doing much better. I held her all night singing to her. Hopefully I wll have her home in a week or so. Thanks for all the prayers.

If you think this is anything new, it isn't.

I collect old medical books and have a gynecology textbook from 1908. 100 years ago. It has a picture, from the autopsy, of the perineal area of an 8-month-old girl who had been raped and died as a result.

:lttang: will not be forgotten.

8 months old!!!!!!!!!!!! :crying2: What kind of monster does that!

She's back on the floor doing well. I'm taking a little break while she's sleeping. She gave me a big hug when she saw me as she was being rolled into her room. She had a little smile on her sweet face, so I am feeling much better as well. The next few days are going to be rough but she's a tough little cookie.

Wow, just Wow! OMG I am balling right now. You are such an amazing woman and a blessing to this little girl. I hope that I become a nurse just like you who truly cares for her patients. I can tell from reading all these posts that you care for all your patients, not just this little girl. Take care of her and yourself and give her lots of love from all of us. :heartbeat I hope everything turns out ok for you both.

So you get to take the little girl home with you when she is discharged?

Yes, I had applied to be a therapuetic foster parent awhile back so it looks like she will be my first placement. There's a small chance that it could fall through but her case workers and treatment team are saying it's a go.

Last night was really rough. She has begun running a fever and her blood pressure is dropping some. Of course she's been on antibiotics since her arrival but doc changed them up last night. I'm scared that she may become septic. I know I am probably overreacting, just terrified. I know she is tough so please pray she can overcome this as well.

I don't think you're overreacting. Aside from the emotional trauma, she has obviously had tremendous physcial damage done and you are right to be on the alert.

You are both in my prayers! :icon_hug:
