I had my nursing school orientation this week. I thought I'd share about it here, since all the "nursing students" in that forum wouldn't have a need to know. Things that surprised me - I didn't realize they would assign us to clinical rotations and we wouldn't have any say in when or where we would go - they use many hospitals in the area, in groups of ten students - my first rotation is REALLY far from here (it'll be an hour and a half commute with the rush hour traffic!) and it starts at 7am. I am SO not a morning person. Oh well. That's only for five weeks and my second rotation isn't as bad, it's not as far but still starting at 7am.
We had to take a math test which surprised me - we already had to have Algebra plus pass the TEAS before applying. It was easy but only 20 questions - if we missed more than 2 we have to take some extra math course.
We need nine books for the first semester, so that'll be expensive! And they already gave us assigned reading for the first two weeks! But the funniest was this sheet with expected outcomes and skills we need to learn - I thought it was for the first semester - no, it's for the first WEEK. Ugh, we have to learn bed baths the first week, and I'm so dreading that. Well, I assume won't have to deal with any real live naked people until we start clinicals (week 5).
So I'm signed up for all my nursing classes! I had my schedule all mapped out but there was a required class they somehow forgot to tell us about - it wasn't on the list at all but it was attached to another class so the system made me sign up for it - some "independent study" thing - and it screwed up my entire schedule. So it was kind of insane, plus the classes were filling up fast because everyone knew what exact time they were opening up the classes for registration. It was stressful, but I'm all signed up.
So lots to do and ORDER - I have to order a uniform (and the link they gave us doesn't work!), a stethoscope, some "skills pack" thing, insurance, and of course all my books. I need to get my student loan worked out, get a physical with vaccinations, and my CPR certification.
Anyway, just thought I'd share!

Hi amwhit,My booklist does have 1 med. dictionary on it. It is "Stedman's Medical Dictionary for Health Professions and Nursing." That is the only one, and the drug guide they have listed is "Prentice-Hall Nurse's Drug Guide." They do have a Nurs Pocket Guide listed, but it is one of the recommended books. The rest are textbooks that are required.
TELL US ALL ABOUT IT I START LPN PROGRAM SEPT.....i didn't get my book list yet they said we'll get them the first day i'm soo excited......:welcome::welcome:keep in touch
Thanks for the insight everyone. I have orientation in a week and a half but classes don't start til September. I found our nursing handbook online and it says that jeans and other casual clothing/shoes and not allowed. Has anyone else heard anything like this?
I also found the textbook list for last year's students so I was able to pick up the reference books that were listed. I hope they don't change!

Hi..
I was just told the other day we can wear our regular clothes. When we go for clinical's, of course, we need to wear our uniforms. I can't get the books until the 1st week of school. We will get them at a discount through the school.
How are you gettint your CPR certification and how long does the class last?
Hi
The course is a one day course. Starts at 8:30am and ends at 5:30pm. I am taking it at the American Red Cross. The entire thing costs $55.00 and they do not refund any of your money if you are unable to make that date. Even if you want to reschedule, you don't get your money back. So unless I am dripping blood from my eyes and have a gun shot wound to the head or heart, I have to be there.
$55.00 is a lot of money when you are unemployed. And when you are employed!!!!!

I thought I would share an update. I cannot believe what was thrust at us in these short summer semesters. Life has taken quiet a turnabout. I went from having my act together in the pre-reqs to not knowing what in the world I am doing from one moment to the next.
Somehow, I made it through semester 1. The real trick is learning time management. I am still trying to figure that out. With each new semester, there will be more and more thrown at us. Each time we accomplish one goal, there will be 2-3 more just waiting on us. Good luck and just remember, if others have made it through, so can we. Hang in there.
Hi, I'm brand new to this forum, got my acceptance letter last week for nursing school! and very excited, but is anyone else overwhelmed already? they sent our letters, that were more like a package, the list of supplies was a full page long including uniforms, ect. and the book list is about 10 books, half of which my bookstore hasnt ordered yet, we had to take a CPR course monday that was 5 hours long, we need proof of our tetorifice vaccines (my highschool is remodeling and have temporarily misplaced our blue cards, i need it by monday!) complete physicals from your family physician (good thing i work at my Dr's office) TB skin tests, Hep B vaccines (had these already from a nursing course in high school), and then we have registration this monday, and orientation next monday! It's just so much to consume! but im very excited! First day of class is August 20th, good luck to everyone! seems everyones first day is the 20th, so we'll have to have a thread that day telling how it went.

Hi. JoannD, just wondering what school you'll be attending. I also start school in Upstate NY on 9/6, maybe classmates?
Anyway I wanted to thank the person for the original post...I have my orientation tomorrow (ok, it's after midnight, so today) and I'm a little bit nervous about not knowing what to expect and all. Wow, I truly hope it's not as stressful as what you experienced. lol, I'll probably come home and cry.
I do think they said something about getting fitted for uniforms. Not so sure. I know they said that our tuition includes our text books, stethoscope, pen light and something else, in addition to two uniforms so I'm assuming I won't need to pay out of pocket for all that (given that I can get all the stuff together for financial aid, I'm waiting on a copy of W2's from my employer as I didn't file my taxes last year). I asked for the copy last week (early) and she said she'd "order" it. Not sure where that's from. ANyway, thanks for the insight. I appreciate it and hope it won't be AS bad.

Hi...
I will be starting at Dutchess Boces this Sept for the LPN program. I am working with the county to be retrained in another profession. They would not help pay for RN at the College. So this is the route I need to take first. I really don't mind. Just as long as I get to go to school and pass my test. I haven't heard too much on the uniforms or fittings. My financial aid is completed, I am finishing up my shots for school. I have to finish my CPR class this weekend.
I too am excited, but at the same time nervous.
I wish you much success in your new career.
Where are you going to school this year? RN or LPN?:balloons:
Hi Joann, well, I am taking mine at Questar lll which is a part of Boces, I believe. I'm taking their LPN program. I'm in Troy, however. I plan at some point in the future to further my education and go for my RN, but I'd really like to get the experience of the LPN under my belt first.
Funny, I was just down in your area last weekend, as my brother in law lives in Clinton Corners/Rhinebeck area.
Classes start for us 9/6 also. I went to my orientation on 7/24. It wasn't bad at all. Mostly an information session.
We will be fitted for uniforms and shoes in the first couple weeks of school. Then in May or June, they do a cap fitting and a capping ceremony (an "almost there" kind of celebration). We will also be fitted for a new (graduation) uniform around that time. Our tuition includes everything we'll need for the class. Except of course our supplies, like pens, pencils, notebooks, etc. Our text books, the two uniforms, one pair of shoes, scissors, stethescope, and pen light are all included in teh tuition. I haven't finished my financial aide yet, b/c there have been some set backs. I got the name and number of a girl who works through the county I work for who can help with tuition. However, I called the girl ALL DAY yesterday and she finally called me back this morning. They only received 3 grants for $1500 each and there is a 6 person waiting list on those grants, so it doesn't look like I'll be getting any money from there...Hopefully, financial aide will do the trick and pay 100% of the tuition. If not, student loans, here I come. lol. I think for the most part, any immunizations I need I already have completed as I work in health care now, I just need to get copies of them (hopefully my job will provide the record, b/c lord knows, I don't know where any of htat could be). I also have to take the CPR class, mine is scheduled for 8/9. lol, I was telling my mother that I need to take CPR and she said, "Wow, I didn't need to take CPR", well, needless to say, she went for her LPN, then her RN. She's been an RN for about 13-15 years now. lol, Mom, ALOT changes.
Best of luck to you. I look forward to using this site for support and offer up any support I can to anyone who made need a shoulder to cry on when it's the wee hours of the morn, you're dog tired and you still have 3 hours worth of studying to do. Good luck to us all.
