My first job!! How much should i get paid in San Antonio?

Published

Hello all, I just got hired here in San Antonio, TX as a grad nurse (I passed NCLEX already). The telemetry unit told me that their human resources department will call me with an "offer" and I have no clue what is the brand spanking new nurse pay. I hope not to get low-balled, so what is an acceptable pay for a new nurse here in town? I went to school out of town which put me out of the loop, btw.

How easy is it to get an RN job in SA in LTC (3years experiences)??

I cant offer any advice for your area but why not just apply at a few and find out for yourself with a very difinitive answer....

I also work at NE Baptist which is referenced above in this post... It is a great place to work overall....

Specializes in CDI Supervisor; Formerly NICU.
how much is the salary today (20011) for an RN 3 years experience??

I'm in Canada and I can easily make 86K... but working 2 jobs and a lot.

I would like to move to TX.... but would I expect the same?? and would

I have to learn a third language Spanish??

While not required, knowing Spanish in San Antonio would certainly make your life much easier. A LARGE portion of your patients are going to be Hispanic.

Argo, you said you work at NE Baptist. I've been looking at the job postings in Surgical Services. The postings don't state that experience is required, but do you know for sure if they hire new nurses in that department?

They will not hire new RN straight into surgery there. They will though offer the periop 101 program if they like you. I don't work there anymore though.... moving to vail, colorado. I will go back to work there when im done traveling around the country in 3-4 years.

You can still make 86K in Houston, working 2 jobs and a lot. There is no state tax and you can rent a 3 bedroom for 1200 in a middle class neighborhood, or buy one for 135K.

You will, however be paying about $600 a year for auto insurance and $250 monthly for health insurance.

do not forget if you buy a home your property tax, school tax, county hospital tax (mine is about $6000 per year)

FYI, salaries and cost of living is much lower in San Antonio than Houston.

Do you think we could make the same in San Antonio or Austin??

what is the average hourly rate in those cities today... 3 years experiences RN ??

Thank you kindly... planning on moving there

I don't know about what they pay in Austin and SA, but I know the cost of living in Austin is much higher, in terms of accommodation. A house you can buy for 100K in SA costs 300K in Austin. You can get average $30 an hour in Houston.

Austin may be the same.

Austin, though is a cool place to be at. It is not flat like Houston and is the liberal cultural capital of Texas. It is in Hill Country and there is a lot you can do outdoors.

SA is for tourists. There is only so many times you can go to the Alamo and River Walk. It is very segregated. If you are not Spanish speaking, you cannot make it in SA (not because they don't understand English, but because they discriminate). That is the reason I left.

ps. Spanish speaking people in Houston are not like those in SA. Houston is the most tolerant city in Texas. I would not live 3 exits outside of Houston anywhere in Texas, perhaps, except Austin.

Really? Why is auto insurance so high? And I thought health insurance was dependent on the facility you work for. Do most charge the price you quoted? I pay that now for a family of three, so hopefully your quote isn't for one person. Thanks.
