My best friend didn't get in!!!!!

Hey all! I am a 1 year student (ADN...eventually BSN), and my friend who has mediocre grades applied to the Nursing program...she'd be WONDERFUL at it, and is very caring, kind, and hardworking...she's smarter than her grades, but hasn't tried hard enough because she wasn't sure what she was going to to with her life. She has an associates degree (just one in general studies), and was going to do the the ADN course right behind me....

My question is...have any of you NOT been admitted to nursing school, did you wait it out, get your grades up and get in? What should I tell her to do? After seeing what I do, she's in love with it...and wants to be a nurse so badly....Her GPA is about a 2.6 (poor grades in history and english), do you think she should take alot of bio classes and get her grades up, or should she go the Surgical tech. route and get experience and training then try again? I just don't know what to recommend to her...

Tell her to talk to an admissions advisor at the school.

Experience and training are all good, but realistically she will HAVE to get that GPA up before she will get into a nursing program (yes there are anecdotes of people getting in with grades like that, but they are the exception rather than the rule in this day and age, when people with a 4.0 are being turned away at some schools). If she cannot retake the classes she did poorly in for a higher grade (many schools do not allow this if the original grade was a C or above), a good idea might be for her to take courses that would apply/transfer to a BSN program (if that is her eventual goal) - it would kill two birds with one stone, so to speak. However, if she IS allowed to retake the courses for a higher grade, that would probably be the better option.

I was turned down one year.....finished up my associates' degree and was admitted the next. Tell your friend, DO NOT GIVE UP!

Here in New Mexico (Central New Mexico CC), everyone is admitted. You just finish your prereqs and get in line. There might be other schools like that, or your friend might be will to come here (depending on the desire).

Another option might be retaking the classes with the poor grades. Many schools replace the poor grade with the most recent one so that it doesn't even factor into the GPA. This is much faster than taking other courses to drag the GPA up.

If there is a school she could get in line for, that would be ideal. Otherwise, re-taking classes seems like the best option.

As pointed out above there are schools where she can get in right now it comes down to how far is she willing to go to achieve her dream? That might mean to moving to rural New Mexico or Pennsylvania for that matter. Just as there are schools where people with straight A's are not getting in (because in addition to A's you need awesome TEAS scores or some other test like the NET) there are other schools (albeit smaller in number) where all of the positions are not even filled. IF she has the bucks one of the better options are private schools because many good students cannot afford 15-20K per year to attend school (and many who can want to major in something more lucrative like pre-medicine, business, pre-law or pharmacy).

Come to Tennessee. I'm not a shining scholar and I got in LPN and RN school on my first try (no, when I applied to the RN school I had not been an LPN first).
