Nursing Students School Programs

Published

Hi!

I noticed there wasn’t an allnurses page for MUSC Spring 2021! So I just wanted to start one out(:

Guys! I got my acceptance email today. I’m from out of state so if anyone needs a roommate let me know ?

@saddiesofia I heard we aren’t supposed to have facebook groups! I could be wrong tho!

I have no clue. Do you know who we would ask to confirm that?

You aren't supposed to.... Do it anyway - just keep it quiet and don't announce it in class in front of instructors - AND DO NOT ASK THEM IF YOU CAN!.  Don't let anyone but your class into your group (ie anyone from previous classes - they just try to sell you their books you probably can't use anyway).

If ya'll have questions - fire away.  Things change every semester - especially since covid.  I'll help the best I can.  I made it through and you can too.

I changed the group to hidden so only members can find it. Just let me know if you want to be added.

Between the Red Cross and American Heart Association, which do you recommend for BLS certification?

@mckenna  AHA

I say this because the majority of hospitals require AHA.  In addition, during 4th semester you will be allowed to take either ACLS or PALS (essentially for free - or very low cost) and you need AHA BLS in order to sit for either of these certifications.

If you already have ARC then don't worry about it now if the school accepts it, but when you recertify - pick AHA from here on out.

FYI - ya'll might want to download and start working on this (or something similar).  First semester is a whirlwind and a lot of stuff happens very quickly.  If you have a good basis and know dimensional analysis - it will save you many tears first semester and give you time to focus on the rest of Pharm.  Don't panic - just spend a little time now before the holidays come.

Besides - its a whole lot of hurry up and wait right now - so this will give you something to focus on.

DO NOT BUY BOOKS UNTIL THEY RELEASE THE UPDATED BOOK LIST!  Sometimes they change up everything and you have spent $$ on books that you can't do a thing with.

I never bought used books but that was just me.  I purchased hard back for Health Assmt, Foundations, Women's Health and Med Surg (I actually purchased a hole punched copy of this because it was so bloody big that I only took the sections we were working on to class).  And YES - I am the weirdo that actually still uses my textbooks to look stuff up now as a working RN.  I am in a residency program and I am still writing up 10 drugs per week!  Do not throw homework away - it can be useful later.

I had both a physical and electronic drug book as well as NANDA book (sometimes it is much faster to look things up with a real book).  You don't have to schlep the majority of your books to class so weight isn't really an issue.  It is however important to get a head start.  When they release the syllabus - start on your readings.  Read BEFORE class.  If you get behind - its hard to get caught up.

Don't study to just pass tests.  Study to learn and build upon that knowledge.  While you may take tests in the beginning based upon rote memorization (pharm is an exception), you will eventually take only application based exams.  No one explained this to us and it took a while to figure out.  If you start out realizing this and study to comprehend from the beginning what the pathology is revealing to you - you will do much better during the whole program.

Also - Mark Klimek, Cathy Parkes, Simple Nursing and RegisteredNurseRN.com (Youtube also) will be helpful in your journey.

Don't be shy - ask away.  I'm here to help.

@bitter_betsy Thank you! I'm looking at the in-person AHA classes, but I'm having trouble finding one that fits with my work schedule. Do you know anyone who has done the online learning, then the in-person skills check off?

@mckenna  Have you taken a class before at all?  If so - then I wouldn't give it a second thought.  Sign up and get that requirement off your todo list.  If you haven't ever put your hands on a mannequin then you may want to reconsider - but watching a few Youtube videos may be all you need in order to visualize where your hands need to go and where to grab to reposition a head (a real human even works for head tilt chin lifts - but I wouldn't practice jaw thrusts on them).

In person classes may be limited or non-existent anyway due to covid.  Online may be your only option.

@mckenna I was able to do an online class and in person skills with Code One Charleston for AHA BLS. Not sure if you are in the area but they had several time slots through out the day once you do the online class to come in for the skills section. Quick and educational.

@bitter_betsy Did you or anyone in your class take notes using an iPad? I’m thinking of getting one to go somewhat paperless and keep everything in one place but would love to hear anyone’s review of how it worked for them. Thanks for the help!

@Mbl19 I ended up doing the same, but with Coast CPR! I was hoping to take the class in person, but the online version wasn’t too bad. The instructor was able to get me in so fast. I’m happy I can check that off my to-do list!

@mb19

So yes - I used an iPad.  Nearly exclusively.  I could write up specifics if anyone is interested, but I used iCloud to store my files so I could access my entire EVERYTHING school related from every device I owned.  It only takes once to need a stupid screen shot of something they could have looked up to never have this happen to you again.  I only have the $0.99 per month plan and it was able to store all 4 semesters easily.

I had an iPad mini, an iPad and a MacBook Air.  I think I took my actual computer to school 4 times (for tests that ya'll no longer have to take - by last semester I only needed my iPad).  I did purchase a cool keyboard case for my iPad to make it more like a computer.  I also had 2 pencils because I inevitably lost one at the bottom of my backpack.  Oh - and I have a usb charger with 4 ports so that I could come home and plug all the crap in so that it was charged for the next day.

In short, I would download the powerpoint for class and use my pencil to write directly on the powerpoint and then save that as the "original" document to study from.  I could insert extra pages and pull screenshots from the lecture if they put something up that wasn't in the powerpoint.  It takes a minute to get everything set up, but OMG - it was so much easier to me than having a crap ton of notebooks and handwritten notes everywhere.  I could study from my phone at a later time if I wanted because everything was stored where it could go between all those devices.
