What is your reaction toward the term "Murses" for male-nurses?

So then... female nurses would be .. Furses?

I have never heard this term being used yet. If I should ever hear it I would be disgruntled and would file a complaint against the person that used it. That is a sexist remark. I have never had any complaints from CNA or LPN/LVN or RNs as too being a male nurse. If anything I have always gotten the question from patients as to howcome you didnt become a Dr.

I don't think it's necessary. You don't see doctors and doctorettes out there.

Excellent point!!!

We have enough stupid new words. This would be one more reason for the ignorant public to feel less than respectful of nurses. Who came up with this anyway?

I have no idea who came up with this word in the first place. But it is already part of the slang in the public wheter we like it or not. That is one reason I did this poll since it already exist.

Look at

Go to 39 or do a search on "murse"

Also look at Time 5/12/2003 vol 161 Issue 19 p52 "I Want Your Job, Lady!"

It mention the word "murse"

The question of how come you did not become a doctor is actually a sexist remark also, depending how you interprete it.

A non-sexist remark would be something like "You are so smart, how come you did not become a doctor?" to a nurse, or to a doctor "You are so compassionate, how come you did not become a nurse?"

Ok, I am replying to my own post. Actually Police Officers or firefighters might not have a gender neutral connotation since most are men.

But there are something difference between police officer/firefighter and nanny/nurse and I am trying to get my finger on it. I do know the difference is not at a logical level but at some other level, probably at a psychological level. Have to think about this more...

Ok, I gave it some thought. Here is my thinking right now and it could change in days or weeks. The question is why is "nurse" or "nanny" have this almost exclusive female association and not police officier or firefighter, for that matter, policeman and fireman. It would seemed that it has to do with what is in the public's mind. A police officeer (even a policeman as one can say "she is a policeman") for example, in the public's mind, is not exclusively male, it is majority male. While the word "nurse" and "nanny" in the public's mind is unfortunately still fairly much exclusively female. That probably is one reason there are proposal to change the title to something more gender neutral or unfortunately already in the public slang, we have "murses" and "manny".

Althought the term "nurse" is gender neutral technically since it does not have a masculine or feminine form, when one say Nurse John for example, for some people who do not know about modern nursing, that is like saying Mother John and there is a incongruency at the psychological level at least.

For us who are use to seeing men in nursing, we don't have that incongruency.

Anyway, give me another month and I'll probably change my mind again...

How is this possible?

How is it that there are so many intellengent, sensible and relevent threads on this forum that barely get noticed, and fade quietly into the archives, yet some b*llshit thread like this, like a bad rash, just won't go away?

Thanks for listening to my vent...

Maybe this thread touches a sore spot in the nursing profession? This is evidently an emotionally charged topic.

I would respecfully disagree that this thread is BS, even though you are venting, for the simple reason which I mentioned infinitely amount of time, this term already exist and it probably will get used more and more given it is in Scrubs, given it is already in Times. As for the rash, it probably will get worst if more of the media start to use it.

We better on a personal level give it some thought so that when we do enoucnter it (if we have not already), we know exactly what our personal position is, why, and how to react to it.

On a more personal level, what have I learned so far from this thread?

* Most people don't like this term. However, there is a small minority who do think it is funny and have a sense of humor about it.

* For some people, the title "nurse" is sacred. For some it is not, therefore open to possible change.

* Polls can totally go wrong as demonstrated by this one as the instruction was not clear. By the time I realize what is going on, I try to fix it and it is too late and totally useless as the thread just takes off on its own in a direction that is not intended.

* Given the emotion generated, I learn that the term "murse" as a topic to bring up can be kind of risky as you never know how people going to react. Basically one probably should be very careful in bringing up "Religion", "Politics", and "Murses" at work.

Hey, you know if they're using it on Scrubs, it's gotta be official. Actually, since Scrubs is about as assinine as this thread, and this thread is soooooooo popular...... hhmmm...I might be eating crow sooner than I think... know any good recipes?

"emotionally charged"? You're kidding...right? :chuckle :chuckle

Hmmm... I don't think I am kidding given your reaction.:)

Question, why in the world are you eating crow? I only disagree with you on whether this thread is BS or not and I gave you my reasoning. I even agree with you that this could be a "rash". You lost me.

I think you are missing my point. It does not matter if is Scrubs is assinine or not, the thing is that people watch it and the Time article used it. If the media use it, people will start using it. It already made it into one of the urban dictionary. As far as it become "official", I really doubt it will become "official". But if I am wrong, I got a few delicious crow receipes.

and this thread is soooooooo popular......

Hi Alexander,

You are obviously having a bad day or something and I am making it worst, it seemed.

I don't know if this will make you feel better, but if you look at the rating of this thread, it does not even have 1 star. Now that should tell you what people think. If you look at the number of people viewing this thread in the Poll forum, it does not even make it to the first page. I guess you think this is a "popular" thread because it has lots of replies. Well, I don't think the thread got lots of replies because it is "popular", it got lots of reply because this poll is not set up right in the first place.
