High Patient ratio. 1:8 or more. It is like work 20% extra hard not getting paid.
1.5-2% extra on housing tax would make you lose even there is no state tax there. Save 2000 dollar on state tax. But you pay about 3000 dollar more on housing tax if you have a house worth more than $200,000 .
Electricity bill is 13c/kwh. This is another 100-200 dollar extra loss financially.
Plus, your wage is $5-10 less, depends where you are from.
I have been Texas. It is a nice place. This my view from financial point only.

To The Commuter,
Do you have information concerning the Houston and surrounding communities? I would be willing to live and work in an area smaller outside Houston, but am not familiar with the hospitals either. For different reasons I am searching the area. Maybe you could send me a private note.
Thanks, Cay
Well, I live north of Seattle where supposedly the COL is 23% higher than several of the areas in TX we are considering (and have been for almost a year) movign to in TX. With my current pay of $21.59 I will be thrilled to start at $24. BUt with experience I suppose I will start at an even higher rate - hopefully. I'm stoked!
My property taxes here are $2500 a year. And my heating bill last month was over $200. It's all relative.
More electricity you use, the higher rate should be. Do a specific search. Don't make assumption.Tell me in specific, which hospitals have 1:5 ratio? prove it.
"Prove it"... what are we in grade school here? Would you like me to get a nurse manager and put her in a choke hold until she signs in blood?
Texoma Medical Center, Denison, Tx has a 1:5 ratio or less. Sure there are rare times when the ratio is higher but not often and our aides and techs are TOP NOTCH!
My cost of living here is NO WHERE what it was in the state I was born and raised and I have a better quality of life as well. If you don't like living and working in Texas you know where the exit is.
I am not a Texan, but as I stated above planning to move there soon. To the OP, it seems to me that there must be a lot of truth to what the posters are saying. If you take a little visit to the Washington boards you will see lots of negatives about pay scale and cost of living, crappy nursign unions, and NP ratios. Nary a poster is inclined to as vehemently defend living and working in WA where I am from. But these Texans, on the other hand, are pretty defensive of your claims and it seems for good reason. Unlike the OP am not being forced to move to TX, but we are chosing to in order to improve our general quality of life. The bonus, I think, will be the great people in TX that I hear about... :) John 123, it seems there are worse places you could go, WA for example.
I agree with you. Texas is not bad comparing to many other States. We RNs are underpaid. This is the root of this argument here.
while we consider the impact on our pocket when we move to Texas. We also need to consider our family needs, pollution, quality of life, culture, career opportunities etc. Each other should make decisions based on our priorities. Thank you all.
Well I for one can't wait to get there. Just savin' up a larger emergency/moving fund. I want the hat, the buckle, the gunrack, the big hair, boots and anything else that comes in the welcome kit (I am a born and bred southerner so take no offense please) For all others I-10 runs East AND West !!

HA! My husband has quite the big hair fetish. When we moved here in 1993 we pulled into a supermarket in Amarillo and went inside for some snacks the first thing out of his mouth when he saw the cashiers was "I think I've died and gone to Heaven!!"

Don't forget about the recipe book that includes fryin' turkeys, smokin' BBQ, and incorporating green chiles into everything you cook!

John you have been posting here for awhile about moving to the North Dallas area. I know I have responded to you before about the same type of questions.
I accepted a position in Plano this week for $23.46/hr +$7.25 night diff. as an LVN I am very excited to be making that kind of money. This facility is a new acute care rehab and the staffing ratio is a hell of a lot better than anything in South Texas. I can't wait to move back to the area. Now what is the problem? You keep talking crap about a place you haven't lived? What gives? Do you have anxiety about the "family issues" or about the reason you have to move? For goodness sakes STOP bashing Texas. We like it here. I LOVE it here! When you get here you will like it too....promise.
