moving to california

I graduate in May from an ADN program, in NC. ON June first I need to be in California, my husband is in the Navy. Can I just take the NCLEX in California? I'm a little lost, my school is useless in regards to which direction to take. I was going to stay behind and just work, but I'm not seperating my family for the sake of a test and license. Any information would be gladly appreciated!:nurse: :monkeydance: :jester:

You can take it anywhere. Early welcome to California! Where will you be stationed?

way too far away from me. I'm up north.

As soon as you have a completed set of transcripts, you can submit them to CA via License by Examination. And take the NCLEX exam.

That is all that you need to do and good luck.

The fastest way to get a license in California is to:

1) register with Minnesota for licensure by exam - takes 1 week.

2) take NCLEX - check out Pearson Vue web page for locations.

3) After passing, register with License by Endorsement to California for a permanent and temporary license - takes 4-5 weeks.

If you choose to Register with California for licensure by exam it may take 6-7 months to get the okay to write the NCLEX. I called the CAL Board of Reg Nursing in October and they were still processing May applications for licensure by exam!!!

In the long run you will pay up to $150 approx. more, but get a license a lot sooner. Hope this helps. I am speaking from first hand experience. Also even if your husband is being transferred you may be entitled to relocation or sign on bonuses with the hopsital. If you do not need the relocation bonus they can increase the sign on. By the way don't sweat the NCLEX it's easy. 1 hour and 78 questions. I'm from Canada and I had no problem with the exam, even with the SI unit converstions. Good Luck!

I would take the exam where you are and then apply for a Ca license. I think that would be less confusing. They are all testing the same way but you don't want to get lost in paperwork. SanDiego is a nice area. Welcome to CA.

Board of Nursing in Ca. Takes forever! I repeat takes for ever!!!

yeah I'm going to take it here first and then get a temp license over there...I'm really excited to go to Cali. I'm originally from N.Y. and I'm stuck in hillbilly hell in N.C. Nurses are not paid anything here. I work as an aide and it's just so backwards here!

I had to laugh when I read your message about Hillbillies. I moved here from arkansas (but I am not from there). I am a city girl too. It is wonderful out here. So beautiful. I got my CA license in 3 weeks, permanent one. The secret is to call them everyday after about 2 weeks. That works. Or, if you get a job somewhere, your employer can hurry about the process. I also contacted the govenor because they really need good nurses here. There are shortages. I have no idea if that helped but I got mine fast.

I think you should do the same, this way you'll hear it from the horse's mouth and you'll know exactly what to do
