Moving to CALGARY this summer.Anyone know what the job situation is like for LPN's?

Hi Everyone,

I am moving to Calgary this summer. I was just wondering if anyone knows what the job situation there is like for LPN's? I am willing to work in either long term care or a hospital setting. I am hoping to find a part time (preferable 0.5) position but would take casual as well. I have 3 and a half year of experience (both acute and long term care). Do you think it is going to be really difficult to find a job?

Also, does anyone know what long term care facilities in Calgary are the best to work in? I really would like to get back into working in ltc.

Have you checked out the AHS job postings? Last I looked there were plenty of LPN postings for both major AB centers both Cgy and Edm. Talking to a graduate RN from Cgy today on my clinical rotation who just moved up here and she said that there are plenty of LPN jobs there, fewer for RNs. It's opposite here in northern AB there are pretty much no LPN postings and a bunch for RNs. (I'm still a PN student hoping there will be a job when I graduate this spring.)

Yeah I just checked the Alberta Health website and noticed that there are a ton of LPN postings in Calgary! So thats a good sign I guess! Just wondering where to check for nursing home jobs...

Nursing homes aren't called nursing homes. Look for Continuing Care Centres. The AHS site has links to the various ones. Capital Care, Good Sam, etc.

Most LPNs prefer the Acute setting. Same money less stress.

I'm sure everyone here knows what I mean by nursing home. Yourself included. I just used that term because it has been around the longest and in my opinion is the most universal.

Yes I realize most LPN's prefer acute. I however am not most LPN's. I have worked both acute and LTC and fell I can make more of a difference in a LTC setting.

I have had 2 LPN friends move to Calgary in the past year from BC. One found a permanent 0.75 in acute care before she even moved :eek:

The other found a permanent FT in LTC within a month of moving there. Then found a permanent 0.5 in acute care after a few months.

Much better than the employment situation in Kelowna for LPNs!

My first friend mentioned also pulled some strings and was able to get her seniorty hours transfered to whichever health authority she was hired at there. (or whatever it's called there). So she didn't have to start at the bottom. May be something ask about.

Really? Thats awesome! Thanks for the info! It seems pretty promising. I would even be happy with casual to start.

I'm also relocating to Calgary....sooner than I expected. I'm currently in Florida, got a contract on my house within 4 days of putting it on the market. So I'll be in Calgary in March.

I've submitted all the paperwork to CLPNA and once they approve, the soonest I can write the exam is May.

I'm looking forward to getting out of LTC and working in a hospital.

I applied for my license in Alberta about a month ago and I have it now! Sooo all set to start applying to jobs. I figure I will wait till about mid March to apply for jobs starting in May. SOOOOO excited!

I am IEN with 3 years diploma in nursing , currently registered as LPN in BC ,I am planning to move to Alberta . Can someone tell me how much toime it will take to transfer my license from BC to Alberta . And what is the whole process for a IEN like me .

You will have to obtain an application from CARNA and have all of your documentation assessed just like you did in BC. The process could take as long as several months. Although you have a BC registration as an LPN Alberta is still going to treat you like any other IEN. Contact them for more information.
