Mount St. Mary's College LA - Accelerated BSN 2010

Published

This is a new thread for anyone that has applied to the Mount St. Mary's College Accelerated BSN program in Los Angeles for 2010 entry.

This is my second application for admission since I wasn't offered admission for Fall 2009. Did anyone hear anything back yet for Spring 2010? Is there an interview process? I have read conflicting information on this topic. I also applied to Samuel Merritt in the Bay Area (also turned down twice to 2 programs for Fall 2009 entry). They wont be sending out admission offers until February for March start dates!! Would love to hear from fellow nursing school hopefuls :o)

Good luck to all you!!

I looked at last year's posters and for those that have been waitlisted I saw at least 3 get accepted.

My WebAdvisor says "Waitlisted."

So I'm back to square one waiting to hear back again. I don't even know what to expect anymore. Can anyone please shed any light on this for me?

I am so sorry! I would be devastated! I hope you hear something soon.

I got in! Can't wait to meet you guys! Remember to wear skinny jeans to the orientation.

I'm waitlisted too. I feel the same, but am trying to remain hopeful.

I am sure I will not be going there so one spot is open to whoever is waitlisted #1. Unless I find a better reason to attend this college.

I got ACCEPTED! So did my friend! I can't wait to meet you all!

The program costs approx. 50k. The school does not offer merit scholarships for the program. Most people take out loans for the program. A few hospitals offer loan repayment programs where they will cover roughly half of the tuition, but I don't really know the specifics of how those work since we don't hear anything about them until your 2nd semester in the program. The number of offers changes every year, so I would say that any and everyone should be mentally and financially prepared to foot the $50k (through loans, etc) and not assume that you'll be able to get one of these positions. As far as I know though, these loan repayment programs require 2 or 2.5 years at their hospital, but your wages are not reduced or anything like that. For me, the way I see it is getting $20-25k for free and have a job lined up by the time you graduate. Others don't want to be committed to a specific facility before graduation.

So yes, the program is very expensive, but I believe it will be well worth it in the end. MSMC has an excellent reputation in the community for training great nurses with top-notch critical thinking skills. Is the SFSU program an MSN program? If so, you may want to evaluate the differences between the 2 degrees (BSN vs. MSN) and where you see yourself as a nurse in the future. I've heard that for some MSN graduates it can be hard to get jobs right away because hospitals want master's level nurses who have experience. I guess some end up working in RN (or maybe BSN?) positions at first. This is just what I have overheard so take it with a grain of salt :)

congrats to those who were accepted, and good luck to those on the waitlist! As you can see, not everyone accepts to MSMC and some drop the program as it gets closer to the start date.

Thanks! kkinla. I'm just a bit worried because I'm not the best candidate... I believe my GPA may only be a little above a 3.0. My worst fear is that I spend all this money into the school and I end up failing. haha. I've heard from a student there that it is REALLY HARD program and if you are good at memorizing you should do well (that scared me off)... 50K is a lot and going to SFSU would be cheaper for me...

What is the attrition rate and how much do you have to study? What percent of the students make it out because I know it will be accelerated.

At my orientation, I heard that at least 90% graduate. The 10% that don't make it typically have financial issues...

I'm sure that it'll be a hard program, but we'll be able to get at least 75% which is the passing grade!

Hi Jake- My interview was scheduled at 10:40am but I was there early. I might have seen you when you left your interview and I went in for mine-I had a red shirt on under my suit if you remember me.
