LOL. I received an X-L and sported it to a formal dinner -- I just knotted it in the back:) I am extremely happy to have been accepted and will pay the $400 to reserve a spot, but at the same time I have to wait until early April to see where else I was accepted!!!! Does anyone else have to wait till early April to see if they get into some other Summer programs????????? There are pros and cons --namely MSMC costs -- to all of the programs that need to be considered...However, if I choose MSMC, I cannot wait to meet all of you gals and hopefully guys??????

Yes I have to wait till the end of Feb and then one school if they are interested interview on Feb 20

Hi :wink2:

I actually surprised my parents by wearing my t-shirt under a button down shirt and opened it up at dinner. It was amusing to see the looks on their faces go from what the hell are you doing to smiling.

I'm a little worried about the cost of the program. I'm not so much worried about the total cost but getting all the money together. I figure this program is an investment for the future and will hopefully provide better financial opportunites, at least that's what I keep telling myself. This is also the only program I applied to, so it's this or wait even longer for something else.

Hi Everyone,

I received my acceptance to MSMC last week along with my t-shirt (XL). I have also been accepted to Western U. MSN-Entry program. I am researching a lot about the benefits of a BSN over a MSN. This is a very hard decision.

It is especially hard because I am a MSMC alumni and absolutely love the Doheny campus. I was there for 2 semesters and we never had any problems. Many of our students stayed in the dorms which were comfortable for them. The buildings and housing there are beautiful. I am always proud to say I am a MSMC alumni.

Is the MSN program a program to become a nurse practitioner?

If you are for sure you want to become a nurse practitioner, I say you go to that program.

but if you are not sure and you are looking at other areas of nursing field (RN or master's degree in other field of nursing like midwife) then I say you should get your BSN first. Because I think if you go into MSN right now without a BSN, I don't think you have alot of flexibility later to choose a different field of nursing if you decide to be something other than a nurse practitioner. THis is my reason for going into BSN program instead of MSN. I want flexibility! ANyways I see why it is such a hard decision!

Hope you make a right one! If you decide to come to msmc, we all welcome you! :wink2:

Hi 'livenlearn"

I totally agree with "juninunmul" about the MSN-entry level. For me, it is more important to be specialized in a specific field of nursing. The MSN is for those who want to be in the administration. If it is what you like, go for it; but, if you really wanna do direct patient care (like me), it is better to get your BSN first and then after about 2 yrs of experience you will know exactly what nursing field you like ; you could then go for a NP program in that field.

I think that in terms of "duration" it comes down to the same number of years. One year for the BSN, two yrs for either the MSN or NP. You should take a look at the coast too!!! What about your familial status??? It is easier to be a student without kids around. I am married with a 4 and 2 yrs old and 2 others on the way. You can't imagine how hard it is to play all those roles (mother, student, wife, worker and friend) at the same time!!!

So think about every aspects of your life and combine them with your final goal. See where you are heading and then make your decision :roll. It is gonna be a hard one to take; anyway I wish you good luck!!!

Hi dmskoka

I said it is not the best area cause it is really not the best area (especially right next to USC).

you will see what I mean when you come. But please don't get scared.. it is not that bad. I just said that because you said you come from suburb and MSMC area is not like that!

and apartments right next to msmc school looks okay.

There are traffic on the local streets and bet ya on the freeway especially around noon and 6pm! But once you know your way around there, you can kinda avoid traffic.

I chose to go to this school cause they have a scholarship program (msmc is affiliated with few hospitals like kaiser) and that scholarship pays 25K or 24K. I heard almost all students who apply get it.... (I really hope so) so if we get that then tuition shouldn't be too much of a problem. THis school also has very good reputation! They don't have the best NCLEX passing rate but pretty good(usually above 90). why don't you reseach on this school a bit online! that is what I did and really helped me. Also go to thread for last year's MSMC applicants. THey probably have most the answers to your question.

I just got back from visiting the school..Loved the campus... not the apartments immediately near though..There were a few okay but generally I didn't like them.I did go off searching and found a place about 7 miles away I believe. They seemed safe enough although no parking.. The rents to me seem outrageous but I guess that is L.A. Yes it is very different from the subs. I think like you say if I got to know my way around and found a place that I felt safe in I would be okay. It is a huge decision.I wish that I had heard from some more schools before we have to send our 400 dollars.. I really liked what financial aid had to say.. They said that we could get 25thousand in federal aid.. The school up here said 18,500 and then the scholarhips. Kaiser pays 25 thousand and you are guaranteed a job - that is a big plus as it is very hard in the bay area to get a new grad job.. thanks for all the input.. if anyone finds any info on housing would appreciate it.. I stopped by the off campus housing but the lady was out.. Didn't get to see the nursing lab....

I, too, won't hear from the other schools until march, dmskoka. i guess we'll have to cough up the $400? i'm not sure how that works. let me know what you plan on doing, but right now i guess we have no other choice?

to everyone looking for housing: i live 10-15 minutes away from msmc. don't feel like you have to stick to the 90007 zip code unless you want to be super close to campus. there are a lot of safer/cheap options in the surrounding areas! morning traffic won't be a problem (classes start at 7:00 a.m from what i remember and traffic at that time is not bad) but traffic back home might be, turning a 10-15 minute commute into maybe 30 or so minutes (especially during rush hour.)

(btw, i live in the glendale/pasadena area.)

congratulations to everyone!! hope to see you in may!

Hi I just got back from visiting.. I liked the school but not really the apartments near. I went out to a complex that was in a rent magazine. It was okay but 1250 a month which seems to be the going rent..He sent me up the street to Los Feliz area which was beautiful but I am sure tons more.. When I asked the adm about the surrounding areas they though that pasadena could take an hour and a half to get there..Can you comment on your experience with this? Could you recommend any apartment complexes in that area?

Thanks

Dawn..

Hi Dawn,

I would not recommend Pasadena as the 110 freeway is a nightmare...Stick to an area where you can take the 10 if need be...:twocents:thats my $.02

thanks a lot!! just the info that I need.!!!!

I agree that the 110 can be a nightmare, but you also have to consider the time of day that you'll be on it. I had to commute to Santa Monica from Pasadena every morning and the 25 mile commute took 1 hour and 15 minutes at 7:00 a.m driving through downtown (2S, 5S, 110S, 10E). Pasadena is about 10-15 miles away from downtown and in the morning I would be downtown in about 30 minutes. I also found that traffic is considerably less just 10-15 minutes before 7:00 a.m, and, according the info session, classes will start 7:00 a.m. I would say that morning traffic gets increasingly worse after 7:00 a.m.

I've also driven to MSMC at 5:00 p.m (prime traffic time!!) and it only took 20 minutes because everyone was heading home and therefore away from downtown.

As for taking the 10, it's just as bad as taking the 110 just before/just after work hours. Anything headed toward downtown is a nightmare because that's where everyone is basically headed from all directions. It's all about timing!

I am sorry, but I would have to disagree. The 110 is considerably worse than the 10West at rush after in the evening. Also, the 10E is much smoother than the 110 in the rush hour morning as well. I have been commuting this track for going on 6 yearsand this is just my experience...

We could run a study , present it to the college and next years students could use it to get to school in record time. I will be commuting more than 20 miles each way so I will be experimenting with different ways to get to MSMC.

This is all good advice. Los Angeles traffic is just bad any way you look at it. I think having to be at school and clinicals by 7 am may help.
