Just reaching out to other fellow nursing students who applied for this coming Fall 2011 ABSN program at Mount Saint Mary's (Los Angeles)...I completed my application a few weeks ago.

How are far along are you in the program? is it all that you expected the program to be? could you tell us more about your experience and what we should look out for when we start this Aug?
Hi all,I am currently in the ABSN program, and as far as dates that you will need to keep open before you start the program, there's one day about a month before the start of the program where you go in for a math exam and uniform fittings. Then, a week before the program begins you have a full day of orientation - I think those were the only dates we needed to keep open. Just a heads up - from now until you start the program, there are a lot of things you need to get together and turned in by a certain date as far as immunization records, physicals, CPR/First aid certifications, etc. so be prepared to spend quite some time gathering all that information and going to the doctor's to get whatever immunizations and blood tests you haven't had yet. Also, the financial aid office is absolutely a nightmare to deal with, I don't even know where to begin...
girlpiggie- I feel like the same thing happened to both of us. I really thought my interview went well and we also interviewed the same week. I think that maybe the people who interviewed last got put on the waitlist. It seems like the people who had interviews the last week of May, got accepted. And when I called to find out my status they told me that I was on the waitlist but they dont give you a waitlist number. Keep me posted if you hear anything.
Fisherking33- I am in the May cohort so I've only been in the program for a little less than 2 months. We just finished our first round of finals for the first half of the semester. I had a friend graduate from this program in 2008, so I knew going into it that it was going to be a pretty intense program. I can definitely tell you that if you live far away from school, it will definitely take a lot of time away from studying with the horrendous LA traffic, and that you really have to learn how to prioritize things... It's all about time management and organization. The more organized you are, the less stressed you'll be. This is the first weekend in the 7 weeks I've been in the program that I've been able to relax and see my friends/family. Some people are able to squeeze in social stuff on the weekends though.. It just depends on the person. The program itself is very well known and mount nurses have a really great reputation at local hospitals from what I hear. Like I said, my only complaint would be dealing with the financial aid office... But other than that, I am really enjoying the program despite the lack of sleep and stress level, but it'll all be worth it in the end. Let me know if you have any other questions but it may take me a couple days to respond depending on how busy I am. :)
I am currently trying to complete my pre-reqs at the local JC but am having a really hard time getting in to classes because of the current budget cuts. I didn't get in to the Chemistry class for summer school and am crossing my fingers I can get in to the class at CSUF. Even though it's much more expensive, it would keep me on track and allow me to transfer Fall 2012. Is anyone else having problems getting in to classes? I knew nursing was competitive, but I didn't realize that this many people were trying for the same program! I am now looking in to the military, but don't know if I should wait until after I complete nursing school, or if I should join now. Any suggestions?

Which JC are you trying? I wasted a summer trying to get classes at Pasadena and Glendale because they're close to me but I gave up. I ended up going to LATTC, LAVC, West LA, Mission ITV, ELAC online. I was all over the place to fit my working schedule, but I finished my prereqs quickly this way and had no trouble getting classes. Good luck!
I chose a JC that I had taken summer courses at many years ago.... to get priority. It didn't give me much priority I was waitlisted for every class. I got into Micro by one person! It's hard... do the best you can. And don't get caught up in dates... I know timelines are important... believe me I know... but just stay the course... and you'll get in.

Don't give up. I would go to different JC's to take the classes that I needed. Mt. Sac has waiting list- so if you aren't on the waiting list you don't have a chance. Fullerton JC and Citrus College both have lottery systems- so atleast your chances are better there. I was able to get into Anatomy at FJC w/ the lottery. You could always try being persistant, since most students that enroll in science classes end up dropping anyways within the first few weeks- just keep attending the class.
Does anyone have some information on what dates we need to be around this summer? I want to take a family trip but want to gather more information on what we need to do next before I plan. I have not received my letter yet. I have also tried to reach someone at the office but have not been able to. Maybe someone here has some info. Thank you.
We have to come in to do our math test either July 5th or July 7th. Then we have orientation on August 15th. Hope that helps!
