Motlow Applicants 2014

Published

Hey everyone! Just wanted to create a place for potential Motlow Nursing students for fall 2014 to converse, ask questions, and get to know each other. Anyone out there? If so, which campus do you hope to attend? I live near Lavergne, so Smyrna campus will be my home base.

For those of you who have questions about the process over the next 6 months, I went through all of the application/acceptance/orientation/etc steps last year, but had to withdraw 3 weeks before classes started due to a financial aid fiasco...so I know what's to come and would be glad to clarify anything for you.

Good luck to everyone and hope to be meeting you all this summer!

Your doing great! I have a bit more to do! While I'm in nursing I'll still hAve to do micro, speech, music, and dosage. I just started school 8/13. I'm a little nervous about the extra classes I have to do!

My advisor said the extra classes I need could b taken in the summer since there is no nursing classes then :)

I thought about that but didn't know if I would have financial aid for the summer. I guess I need to go meet with the financial aid dept.

Are you planning on meeting with a nursing advisor soon?

You and I both need micro.

I have a question for anybody who is already in the program, do you think it is possible to work and attend nursing school?

Ive ways gotten financial aid over the summer so u should too :) and I need to meet with one to go over everything. Want to make sure I do everything right!

I'm not in the program yet but I have friend in another Nursing school, and they said it is so hard to work and study Nursing in the same time. but hey, you gotta do which you you gotta do if you have bills to pay or family and there are no other source.

There are people in the program who are working and attending.. I couldn't imagine doing it. Just nursing school exhausts me, lol.

I didn't buy anything at orientation. I'm cheap and they really jack up the prices. I bought everything I needed online a little at a time. I think the background check was around $100. The vaccinations are expensive too. I didn't buy a single book from the bookstore. I would definitely buy older editions of most books (other than fundamentals and med surg). Everything adds up to quite a bit. I made it through 2 years of ns with one set of scrubs without any issues (absolutely don't need two sets immediately), I bought mine from a scrub shop in winchester (much cheaper). I also bought the boot cut version that isn't listed because I hate the recommended cut, again no issues. Buy good shoes. I tried Danskos and hated them (I have a size nine in danskos and a size 9 in some Nike leather that are both dress code approved for sale if anyone wants some cheap-danskos worn twice, nikes worn 10 times). I ended up liking some leather asics in solid white (not technically uniform, but after the first couple of weeks of clinical, no one notices, as long as they are white).

A lot of the books can be skipped or bought when needed. Several only were used one or two weeks, if you have $$ issues, just wait and see.

If anyone wants to pm me, feel free. I'll send you something helpful :)

I have a question for you guys who are already in the nursing program. Do you know what are schedule will look like for the fall? Will we have to drive to Tullahoma this coming year. I heard in the past, that you guys had to drive there 2xs a week. Just wondering if we should expect that this year too.

I think we will, Melissa. I think the explanation they gave last year was that since we can't start actual clinicals right away, we have to go to main campus for at least the first few weeks to use their facilities for a sort of pre-clinical lab or something like that. But I'm sure 2bRNFarmer or nursinghopeful can clarify that for us.

we can car pool and save some gas

For our class, the first 3 semesters Smyrna and Mcminn folks had to drive to main campus a lot. 2x's per week or more the first while, but this semester (4th) they are doing lab on our home campus. (this is the first time they've tried doing it that way, don't know if they will do it for you guys---I seriously, seriously doubt they will do it for first year (lots and lots of lab content). I would anticipate doing a lot of driving the first few weeks, then one day per week after that).
