A very sad story from England.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/shropshire/7078455.stm
A young mother has died after giving birth to twins, following claims that she had refused a blood transfusion because of her faith.Jehovah's Witness Emma Gough, 22, from Telford, Shropshire, gave birth on 25 October.
i'm sorry but there is something about just letting a patient that you very well might have saved die that makes me sick...i know all about "it's her right" stuff. well why did she even come to the hospital, why not just have the baby at home then in some cornfeild. a patient comes to the hospital and wants our help, but then when her life is on the line she refuses....i'm sorry i'm in the buissness of trying to save life, sight or limb. thank god my name is not on her record, cause it just makes me sick.
I could understand how you feel
its frustrating and seems so out of this world that people are like that they prefer to die and have their kids live a uncertain future over being religious
}IN this case this mother gave her life for her greater cause in order to gain the real life. This mother has unsurmountable faith in that she is following the example of her leader Almighty God Jehovah himself who did not withhold his only begotten son Jesus Christ so that the rest of us(mankind) may have hope , life , peace, etc. I happen to see this an the ultimate act of unselfishness just the opposite of your view.
That is what makes us all wonderfully unique our abilitiy to formulate and standby our each individual decision.
sounds like gave life for stupidity
you prefer to die without accepting life to take care of your kids
so then god allowed her to have kids and she dies leaving them orphan
sounds like cult to me
No, Im sorry, I cant shut up now! The greatest CAUSE in bringing forth life, is surely to MOTHER those lives, to be with the wee people you have created EVERY step of the way, every step that you are Physically able to take with them! Surely the greatest cause in this life, is to be raising your own babies, To be their MOTHER..which, at conception, is what your body chose to be! If help is needed to BE that Mammy..Then take it..with all your heart...Holy Christ...HOW can you miss out, and cause your babies to miss out, on the most special and unique relationship that can ever be felt in the soul??Again, I will offend, but I dont care really, ....will the almighty god jehovah sing these babies to sleep at night...will that same jehovah nurse them and make them strong and healthy?????????? NO!!!!
Unselfishness...thats when you dont sleep for days, cause your babe doesnt want to, is having a growth spurt and wants to feed constantly!
Unselfishness....NO...leaving your tiny baby is not unselfish...times that by TWO!!!:angryfire
i agree heeeeeeeeeeeeeee he he ha aaaaa
wisdom is needed in these cases most of these people are following what a so called leader is teaching them with out questioning to see if it make sense

{While I must agree those are all unselfish acts having demonstrating them myself many times over although my personal feelings have no place in the care that this mother should or should not recieve. This is what she believes and no matter what either of us my think or feel about it was her decision to make; unfortunately in taking such a stance this mother could not please everyone. By the way no offense taken by me I'm relating what I know about their JW'S belief system.
My personal view remains unchanged we each have the unique rights and abilities to think, feel,worship in manner that seems correct to each individual; may not seem right to you and the children may grow up and it might not seem right to them either they may or may not feel betrayed yet at that instance of hospitalization it was about the acceptance or rejection of a treatment method for a complication. This mom rejected what most would have went along with the status quo, that was her individ right to do so. Had 2 precious ones not been involved not very many would really care citing an adults right to choose. These are just my three cents. By the way there are many things I disagree with strongly but I try to very hard not to impose whatever my value systems maybe upon my clients/patients. Also, the article states this mother would be excommunicated for accepting an blood transfusion it is my understanding that this is not so, but not only that they were told according to the article that the transfusion would not have saved her.}
My response begins above in the brackets and ends with the following statement:Once again that was this mother's stance not one of us can take a stand for her and what she feels or thinks is important to and with her God we can only stand for whatever form of supreme being we indiv. choose to worship or not.

A cornerstone of religion is faith which, by definition, is not about 'sense' or 'wisdom' in the rational or scientific sense.
And in any case, if you believe that your choice is between a short time on earth (albeit with your children) or an eternity with the Lord (and with your children) then the latter is the wiser choice. Especially as there was no guarantee she would have been risking her immortal soul for anything - she may well have died anyway.
The Jehovah's Witness community is united and tight knit, and the children will be raised by family and with faith. That's more than many children have.

Then why ,according to the old testatment, did the Mother of God, allow her only son to be crucified? I am sure that with her knowledge, and connections, she could have "saved" him. We are care givers, not savors. We care, nuture, teach,"advocate",for the pt, our beliefs stay secondary. Hence ,if u can not stand the heat, get out of the kitchen. For example, I am not against abortion, but would never participate in one, so why would I work in a facility that does them? Just an example. Lets save our judgemental side for the courtroom or our homes, lets do what we signed up to do,care for our pts and make sure there decisions are carried out when at all possible! Have a great day all!
pity pity pity so sad
true
i realize you have to just let people do what they want to do even if it means they are falling into a ditch
they have to answer to god not me.
i have had enough of trying to give people advice
do what ever the heck you all want to do period. if u want to jump off the building go ahead

Let's try not to disparage other religious viewpoints, shall we? Of all people, you have constantly spouted your purported "christian" religious beliefs and here you are demonstrating intolerance towards another group who happen to believe something different than you do.
Please think again before you decide to type.
Not to knock the religion, but I wonder why they are not vegetarians b/c anytime you eat meat, there is blood in the meat, you are just cooking it so it doesn't hurt you when you eat it.
That was my first thought when I read the biblical passage quoted in one of the news articles. Of course, seventh day adventists are supposed to be vegetarian, but I've met more than a few who don't worry about that. Religion is an interesting thing; it seems there's always room for interpretation, even between different churches of the same denomination. That fringe baptist church whose members protest soldiers' funerals is a disturbing example.
Anyway, this is the passage that was quoted:
And any man from the house of Israel, or from the aliens who sojourn among them, who eats any blood, I will set My face against that person who eats blood, and will cut him off from among his people
Leviticus 17:10

To me that passage sounds more pro-vegetarian than anti-modern day blood transfusion, but then maybe that's my bias. Really, I don't care -- I think that respecting the autonomy of our patients should come before all else. Of course it's sad that this girl's children will grow up motherless, but the blame for that falls on their mother and not on any healthcare provider. As a nurse I imagine I'd be frustrated if that were my patient but it's not my place to judge. All we can do is make sure our patients are making informed decisions.

This case is very sad, especially for those babies. Everyone has the right to refuse and no matter what our feelings are or what our response would be, she made her choice based on her beliefs and they should be respected. I am not too much into religion but I've always been taught and believed that God forgave all sins, would this have been an exception?
