Montgomery College Fall 2014

U.S.A. Maryland

Published

Hey everyone,

I thought I would start a thread for everyone who has applied at MC for this fall 2014. The deadline was this Tuesday April 1, 2014. I have brought in my application last Friday.

So for anyone else who has applied, has been accepted or has any other contributions please share with us!

Prospect - Thanks for the info! That would be great to get a job right after graduation. MC is so much cheaper than UMSON and the schedule works better for me. I have young kids so that is important to me right now.

Hi Em843! Hoping you can still hear good news from UMSON and MC.

Personally, I'm just trying to get in a program so I can become an RN (I guess that is my priority so I can start my nursing career). There are tons of programs for the RN to BSN track (usually takes about one year more after you become an RN), so I'm planning to do that.

But I think ProspectRN is really right about the job prospects. I don't think anyone can deny that there will always be openings for any type of RN, so I wouldn't worry too much about that.

It's so nervewracking not hearing from the office for this long. I kind of wish I knew of my app status. Ambz13 did say they found out on the 14th of May last year, so I'm hoping that will be the case this year as well.

Hey everyone,

I hope you all get to hear back soon!

I am currently at MC (taking my prereq) and I love it. I have heard such wonderful things about the program. MC's program was not my top choice, because like you Em843, so many people told me that it is hard to get a job with an ASN nowadays. I also think of it as a slight waist of time to do 2 years, work then go back for a year or two and finally go for my masters/doctorate. I want to finish school as soon as possible. Luckily I got accepted at my top choice, UMSON, so I will be attending this fall.

Wait didn't you start this thread? I'm glad you got into your top choice, that's wonderful for you. But if you're going to start a thread about MC, please don't downgrade the program and say it's a "waist" of time just because you got into your top choice. And 2 years getting your ASN isn't a waste of time to other people who are working hard and hoping to become RNs . And I hope you're doing your research when looking for a RN job because the basic requirements is to be a RN from an approved nursing program which MC is. Then based on the place you're applying to, it'll state if it's "BSN preferred".

Hi ProspectRN,

Yes, I started this thread. There is no way that I "downgraded" the school nor the program. I transferred to MC from a traditional 4year university and I advise every high school senior to start at a community college, specifically mc for many reasons besides financially. As far as it being a waste of time, I simply explained why MC was not my first choice. Clearly that was my opinion and reasoning. What I meant by that anyway is that my end goal is to become a pediatric np. I am a woman who wishes to start a family in the near future and I don't hope to juggle school, a career as an rn and being a mom and wife for too long. I have been in school long enough and going for my associate, then having work experience as an rn, then finding a new school for my bsn and going through the hassle of expired science courses, then doing my bsn, applying to a dnp program then finally becoming a nnp while I can shorten that process is why mc was not my top choice. Do I think ASN is less than a BSN? Absolutely not. Timewise, a bsn is more suitable for me. I am not sure why you got worked up by my post, but in case I have offended you or your choice by my opinion, forgive me please. I have done research and will continue to do so.

I don't think an ASN is a waste of time, especially if you're smart with your time. Getting experience in a facility you would like to work after your first semester (you'll be a CNA) is easier when you're taking ~9 nursing credits/semester as opposed to 15-17. That gets your foot in to door for a possible job upon graduation. Additionally, if you land a job in a hospital during nursing school they will pay for you to get your BSN! And you can do it online! So much cheaper and less stressful and only takes one year longer :p

For me, MC is a better option because I can keep working full time nights at my hospital while doing nursing school part time. I used to feel in a rush to get school done ASAP, not anymore.

I think this is a great way to look at it! MC is a great option for students who need to work/have kids or other responsibilities besides school.

Ambz13,

Yes for someone who is busy and wants/has to work an ASN is definitely a smarter option. If I did go to MC, I was looking into doing an online program after I get my ASN. Luckily, I have the option not to work during nursing school and I am kind of putting off my "family life" for that reason. I am married, but we don't have any children yet. That's why going for an ASN first was not my top option.

Very true. I have been accepted to BSN and ASN programs and I just personally would like to keep my job while in school as it was difficult for me to get (and is in the department I want to work in when I get my RN). I am young and unmarried with no children so I would have time, but school expenses would be a burden on my family. We all have to choose the best option for our situation! Different strokes for different folks :)

Best wishes in your school and career goals, and most of all, congrats!
