Montefiore School of Nursing Spring 2016 Applicants

Updated:   Published

Hello Guys! Figured I'd start a new thread on Montefiore SON for Spring 2016 since I haven't been able to find one. Anyone out there in the process of Applying to their nursing program? I called them yesterday and was told they will be sending out Exam invitations soon. Where are you in your process??

Good luck to everyone taking the test!!!

Congrats Hope! I know you're breathing easy now. I have a month left before my test. *bites nails*

How was it? Did you find it hard?

Hey,

The test itself was not that” bad. I was very nervous, having panic attacks and everything. What's bad is that each question are worth so much and if you get 5-6 wrong on each section your automatic in the 70s% and that's what happened to me.

But anyway, Reading look at the question first because it may ask to know what is the summary for paragraph 3 is? So you don't waste time. The story weren't that long 5-6 short paragraphs. It may ask: What it the meaning for the underlined word_________? What is the author's purpose?

Math: When I first started this section the calculator wasn't working and I started panicking and timer running! The girl next to me had the same problem and the lady there started calling someone to see what was happening- Thank God I knew how to do the first few questions without the calculator which helped me safe time… meaning while the lady was still on the phone the girl next to me hyperventilating. I started double clicking the calculator option and it work! So, for the math section, if the calculator doesn't start right away double click the calculator option it will work. So know how to add decimals, subtract, and multiply. Multiply, add, divided fractions and simple algebra question based on ratio and proportion. Know how to look for percentages? Ex. 40% is what number of 30? (something like that)

Witting was like reading look at the question first. It may ask on paragraph 3 which sentence has the wrong subject- verb agreement?, Where does this sentence best fits in? or which sentence(s) should be removed?

Science: In my opinion I though this section was going to be the hardest and I was very afraid of it but it was very simple A&P stuff and if you did well on A&P you should have no problem. Know the pathway of the heart, why are the cells in the nervous system different from other cells in the body?, What happens during hyperventilation? What are the different fluids in our body? It also had a question about the endocrine system which surprised me because it was not listed on the list of system to study. The absorption of nutrients does take place in? What system control PH level?

If I remember anything else I will keep you inform… Good luck- (sorry for long and some grammar errors)

Hope,

Thank you for going into such detail. This definitely helps lower the stress level a bit. I kind of wish I scheduled the test for the first day, just to be done with it. I'll do some of the math without a calculator just to be on the safe side.

Did they tell you when they will be making a decision (i.e. month)?

The lady said by the end of next month or early November..

Thanks Hope.

Good luck!

Thank you Ldy76.

Tell us about the program so far. How are the professors? Are you "teaching" yourself? Do you feel the education you are getting is adequately preparing you? What hospitals are clinicals held at? Have they discussed the possibility of hiring their graduates now that their hiring freeze is up?

Hi there. The profs will teach u what u need to know. The exams r nclex style n it's supposed to get u ready to take the actual nclex. No, I don't feel that I'm "teaching" myself, tho they will not spoon-feed u, u have to do a lot of the leg work. The clinicals r held at montefiore owned hospitals (new Rochelle, mt Vernon n Bronx). Contrary to what people might say, montefiore do not hire their graduates. The hiring process is the same as w other hospitals. I was informed that they would help w writing up ur resume.

Hope that helps 😀

It helps a bunch. Thanks Ldy. That's a bummer that grads don't have first dibs on the jobs at Monte. If they are enrolled in a BSN program, they should at least be considered.

I know you are relieved!! Thanks for the information. At least you know u met the requirements of aiming for a 70 and up as I was told by admissions. Im sure we will all get in.

Your welcome! I feel 1/2 good but I what I would like to know is how many applicants are taking this test. There are only 35 seats available and the admission is based on 95% on the Kaplan score then the last 5% on GPA. But we gotta to keep our hopes up right?!

Wow those are the statistics? They made it seem like it was 50/50 when I spoke to admissions!!!

I hope they take into account the student as a "whole" not just a score on some test! I pray we all get in, I know this is all our dreams.

They can b considered but it's not definite. It's like any other jobs.
