Hello! Does anyone know about pay scales, etc. for new grad RN's in the Richmond area? What about Bon Secours versus HCA? or even VCU/MCV? How does one find out the "real deal"? Thank you!
I am a new grad working at mcv/vcu hospital. I can tell you that the money there isn't that great. Because I had my BSN they started me a little higher then if I just had my RN. I interviewed at Chippinham also they start you even lower. The money does not match the four hard years worked in nursing school to get that degree that is for sure.
I was reading this thread recently as my daughter is considering a move from northern VA down to VA Beach after she graduates. She is getting her BSN from George Mason and will be graduating in May of next year. She has her eye on Sentara as that appears to be the most well-known. However, I am surprised to see starting salaries are in the $16-$17 range!! That seems rather low to me. Can someone let me know if this is still the current starting salary for new grad RNs in VA Beach? Thanks.

Hi Revahs,
As far as I know the starting pay at Sentara for new grads this year was $17.50 and I believe it will be up to $18 once I graduate in May '05. Sentara also offers tuition reimbursement out-of-area new BSN grads.

Also, they have relocation assistance for new grads

It kind of burns as neither of these will apply to me when I graduate since I live in the area and will be getting my ADN...oh well...
Best of luck to your daughter, this is a nice area to live in.

A friend of mine is graduating from Southside Regional in Dec. She has told me that they are paying $18.66 (not real sure about the change part) an hour and the shift differentials were interesting. I will ask and give you more info because that should be pretty standard for that area.
I am new to the area and have discovered that the pay for RN's is about the same here if not lower than in Oklahoma. Sentara does have good benefits but the pay is low. It is obvious that they have a monopoly on the medical field and can set the pay at what they want because of the monopoly. I did accept a job with Sentara but was working in an office and was basically a glorified secretary. Needless to say after 2 weeks I put in my notice since I am a nurse and don't care to file charts for an hour a day. I was making 17.50/hour and had to negotiate greatly to get that much. (I had prior experience as an LPN) I was told that in the offices here you don't get as much because of the luxury of working 8-5 Monday through Friday. Not sure if that helps anyone but just the information I found out as a new RN to the area.

hi everyone,i'm graduating in may with a bsn. I am from new york and looking to relocate to richmond(henrico co.) I thought that rns in VA make at least 50k/year. I
make $17 in my position now as a nurse extender. I feel a little discouraged right now.As someone else said four years of nursing school for $17/hr? That sucks!!

monalise... i work in northern va... for a large hospital system... our new grads started at $21/hr but the housing here is outrageous!!! (over $1000 a month for a 1 bdrm apt) so even though the hourly rate sounds good, it doesn't go very far...
I just interviewed at Centra Health in Lynchburg. Graduated from their RN diploma program in 1991. Worked full time 7 years then went to limbo positions until 2001 due to my husband's travel. Completed my BSN degree in 2005. They gave me a hire rate of $19.88 an hour (working limbo....no benefits....no bonus...or anything like that)

My husband is a nursing student in the third year of his degree in BC, Canada. We are looking very seriously at relocating to Norfolk, Virginia when he is finished. When he checked out sentara, they said their starting wage is $17/hour. The differentials are listed on a previous reply.
Being unfamiliar with the area, I am wondering if $17/hr plus differentials is a reasonable standard of living. At our local hospital new RNs make $25.73/hr with differentials less than $2/hr. $17/hr would not be considered a median wage here.
