Morning all. I have a question for the guys and gals who have arrived in the US already... Realistically, how much money do you NEED to have when you arrive for starting phone line, deposits etc... How long till you got your first pay packet. Also, can you give me an idea what the monthly take home is??? So many questions, I know. We are selling our house, but due to too many years of 'have it now' lifestyle, once we pay off the debts, we wont have loads of equity to take with us. Will also have profit from selling car and household contents. Not sure if that will be enough or if we will need to consider selling one of the children on ebay!! Any info would be great! XX:uhoh3:

Hi,

It took about 10 days more or less like the UK. I went and joined the local library and you can get on line there.

You can also take out DVD's up to 50 and it costs nothing-so well worth joining

we brought quite a bit in cash as we didnt know what we were going to be flying into. had to pay rent, and deposits, bought a car for $5,000 cash. we had to buy sheets, towels pots pans, and all the stuff for the home, as it only came with basic furniture. then all my scrubs and work shoes as we could only wear white and i had taken all blue.

and lots of summer clothes as it was so hot. we flew on july 1st and i didnt start work for nearly 2 weeks, so it was another 2 weeks before we got paid.

you also have to remember that the immigration forms on the plane ask how much cash you are carrying as a family as theres a limit on it. cant remember how much but we had over the amount but just palyed dumb and didnt declare it.

you can carry in up to $10000 without declaring it, anything over that must be declared but there isnt any tax on it.

if you dont declare it and they find it, which may be a possibility due to recent developments with baggage searches, they have the right to confiscate it which could be a real bummer!!

out of curiosity, how negiotable is rent on properties over there?

In my experience, rent is non-negotiable. We have very few rental properties available and its the owners market.

thankyou

:D

but i find that a bit confusing as there seem to be loads of rental houses in chandler offering incentives to move in like free months rent, washer dryers etc, and some i have seen have had their prices reduced and have been on the market for ages.

i can only assume you live in CA

lol

I know a number of people who negotiated their rent I just didn't know when we were renting, the people who took over our rental property pay $140 per month less than we did.

I can only speak for Tucson but there are a huge amount of rental properties you just need to look in the classifieds of your local online paper to get an idea.

It all depends on supply and demand to be truthful. $$$$$ is all it is about. If they can rent it for the require amount they will, if they are struggling then they will be more willing to compromise. The houses never ever look like they show on the pictures sometimes the photos are of the house when it was built and not true to life. Typical realtors

I agree that if they can get the full asking price they will but there does seem to be room to negotiate, i have a friend at work who owns 5 properties and she said they do negotiate and that they will sometimes take a little less even if they're offered the full price if the people offering less have a better credit score or look like they will rent it longer term.

We never really had any problem with the houses looking different to the picture but then we didn't look at too many and we rented through the classifieds not through an agent.
