What do you tell your students Who come to see you first thing Monday morning with , " my mom said to come see you because I fell off my bike Saturday afternoon I think my arm is broken" &/or "my mom said to come see you because I didn't feel good this morning and u could give me something". Really?
Parent: Why can't you (me the nurse) splint a weekend injury that I didn't have looked at nor do I have any intention of having it looked at.
Me: sir, the finger is purple with no ROM. The child needs to be seen. No I will not do an initial splint because I'm not a doctor and want to keep my license.
Parent: have the child take a phone pic and send it to me.
Me: um ok, did you not see him all weekend or this morning?
Happens a lot.
Recently had a parent bring a student in first thing in the morning. Student attends school in my district, but doesn't even attend my school! Kid has a banged up hand from an injury at home that morning. Hand is swollen and bruised. Almost no ROM. Parent asks me, "Should I take her to urgent care?" Gee, ya think?
Yep, had a mom bring her daughter n this am asking me if I thought her daughters ankle was broken? The daughter went tubing 2 weeks ago, really? I'm not sure about your school but I don't have an X-ray machine in the closet. I'm revoking her parenting license. I suggested Urgent Care down the st., and have a nice day.
Wow I cannot believe parents do this...now I have truly heard it all!!!!
Here's a favorite..Student being sent home. I call parent who says "I will be there in 30 minutes." I notify student of timeline. Inevitably, I am asked at least twice while we wait "when is my mom going to be heeeere?" I sometimes just say. "hang on...(look in drawer) OH DARN, I left my crystal ball at home!"
I had the student who came in and said, "My mom wants you to look at my throat and tell me if I need to see a doctor." My response to 99% of my students, is yes, you have a complaint, you should see a doctor. Apparently I'm qualified to diagnose strep, but not qualified to hand out cough drops (I don't hand out cough drops because I have no standing orders/parental permission, but the students don't get that). What a strange world I live in.
