MN vs. WI employment

Hi: I am a CNA, live and go to school in Minnesota, one semester of LPN left. We may be moving to WI, can anyone tell me how to find out if I can transfer my CNA certification to WI? And when I am done with school, could I take the boards in MN if I live in WI? I know it is confusing. I plan to finish up my LPN in MN at my current school. Thank you :uhoh21: :uhoh21:

You should be able to transfer a CNA certificate to WI without problem. Usually CNA's are governed by the Dept. of Health and Human Services, look up the number for Wisconsin. If you can't find it, call the Wisconsin board of nursing, do not call Minnesota. It is up to WI to decide if your CNA certification meets their standards and if they will accept it. The WI board of Nursing will be able to tell you who governs the certifying of CNA's in their state. Occasionally the Board of nursing themselves in some states do that but most of the time it is a different department of the state. This should not be a problem for you as MN and WI generally share similar standards for education, clinical hours, etc.

Now for the LPN part:

You have 2 options. Option #1: When you graduate you can take the NCLEX in MN and then apply for an endorsement into WI once you get your MN license. Same situation as transferring your CNA certificate from MN to WI except the board of nursing will handle this and they may want you to provide extra documentation such as nursing school transcripts, affidavits from program directors, etc.

However, (here's option #2) if you are certain that you will not be working as an LPN in Minnesota and will be moving to Wisconsin by the time you start working as an LPN, I would not do option #1 because it will take more time and cost you more in fees paid to both boards of nursing. Call the WI board and get an application to take the NCLEX in WI. You will have to drive to a site in WI and test there, (whichever state you take the exam is where the license is that you will be receiving.) If you test in MN you will receive a MN license then have to endorse into WI.

If this is still confusing, ask your instructors as graduation gets closer and they should help you.

Just a quick note to you regarding MN vs WI. First you can take your boards in any state you wish. That is if you have not taken the test yet. In MN you may not be elgible to cross over the boarder with a reciprocity license without paying extra in fees. MN has made it very hard to leave the state. They do not want to lose nurses. Plus the govt. shut down has made the process more lengthy. For licensure in WI there is one form that you fill out called for temp licensure that applies you to their board under your WI license--no extra $$$. MN does pay better than WI and depending in where you work or live you will notice. As for the CNA you just go to this web site and all of the info is there.

Isn't Wisconsin a Multi-State Licensing state?? Meaning, if you take your state boards in WI, you will not need to take them in MN, and like 7 other states. I'm not sure if you have to have a certain number of classes actually completed in WI, but I would definetly call the Department of Regualtion and Licensing just to be 100% sure.

Wisconsin is a part of the multi-state compact but Minnesota is not.

Once you take boards you will not have to take them again in any state period.

You will, however, need to apply for a MN license. To correct a previous statement I made, you can apply for your initial license as a MN license and not even bother with WI but still actually take the NCLEX in WI.

[Now for the LPN part:

HI! I have just taken my NCLEX for the LPN. Since the NCLEX is standard nation wide test you can take it anywhere. You have to fill out the correct paper work for which state you want to be licensed in. I wanted to be licensed in Wisconsin but I took my boards in Bloomington MN. My advice would be to go throught the WI board of Nursing, it is Multi state and you can work in MN if you choose or Wisconsin.

I have to deal with this issue freq. I am a DON in WI on the border of MN. Sorry, but the state of WI no longer handles their own CNA certs. You need to get that from the company they contract with. that is online also. http://www.promissor.com. You would be able to print out the paperwork and then all you need to do is dend it to the state of MN and they mail it to Promissor.
