Mission Hospital Asheville or Duke

U.S.A. North Carolina

Published

Hi all,

Im new to the site and posted this in the Pediatric forum at first. I am a 3 year Neonatal ICU nurse from Florida relocating to North Carolina. I interviewed at Mission Hospital and was extremely pleased with the unit and think it would be a great place to work. I left the interview concerned that I did not get the position and applied to WakeMed and Duke. I was offered the position at Mission a few days after finding out I had secured interviews at the other hospitals. I absolutely love the Asheville area and have heard wonderful things about their NICU. I have never been to Durham/Raleigh but am of course interested in working at Duke. Does anyone have any opinions on quality of life and work environment for either of these hospitals? I'm not sure I'll even get a position at Duke but don't want to think I missed out by accepting the job at Mission without looking at all of my options. I am a single woman in my late 20s without children. Thank you!!

I already had a job and moved for the job at Mission. I'm not sure how much my relocation expenses have cost so far but it's been pricey. The drive, staying in a hotel for a week, not to mention the cost of making the trip up here to interview for the job. I just moved myself...I can't imagine the cost of moving a family! I called HR yesterday but haven't heard anything back. I figured they would talk about it when I signed my papers, got my badge etc, which is what my old hospital did. Hopefully, I'll find out more today. It's been tough!

Hope you had a good day!!!!

Mission is a great hospital with an awesome heart department, one of the best. I was a heart patient there almost 6 years ago and was very impressed with the nurses and doctors there. I am a first year nursing student and may work there some day. I have heard it helps if you know someone that works there and that they ask you if you do. My husband's aunt has been there for over 20 years and has loved it! Good luck everyone!

I too am starting to research Mission for a future position. Can anybody give any input to how the CVICU works as far as scheduling? Do the nurses schedule their own hours, rotate weekends, etc. Do they offer weekend Baylor options? Do they utilize 12 hour shifts?

I was also wondering about the float pool. Is it a good one? I'm not a big fan of the one they use in the hospital I'm currently working in.

Thanks.

I'm glad to hear that it took everyone else a while to get things going after getting the official offer! I'm also a new grad, but received the "conditional offer" letter about a week before graduation. I'm anxious to get a start date set up, but I also have to pass NCLEX, lol. I was told that I probably won't be able to get a test date until the 3rd or 4th week of January, and I'm a little concerned about what that will mean for my start date...and also how long they will hold the position for me (I told the hiring manager when I interviewed that I likely wouldn't be able to test until mid to late January).

Also, did anyone have a problem getting an apartment with the "conditional offer" letter? Since it doesn't have a start date, I'm a bit concerned that it won't be good enough to serve as verification of income.
