Missed H.R call

Published

Hello everyone! I am a nervous wreck right now because I missed an HR call for a internship that I really wanted. I am a new grad with no previous job experience and I can't afford to miss this opportunity. I got the call at 3pm but I was in an area where the reception is horrible and didn't see the missed call until 40min later. I didn't call back right then because there was no voice mail so I figured it wasn't important. Fast forward to 12am and my phone says that I had a voicemail and it was the HR recruiter telling me to call her back! :nailbiting: I don't know what's wrong with my damn phone! I feel horrible that I might of missed a once in a lifetime opportunity. This was Friday. Today is Saturday. I don't know when to call back. What to do?!

Ok so here is an update. I listened to the message what seemed 100x because I just couldn't understand the lady's name and so I was freaking out and asked my husband for his opinion. He suggested I call the number and see what the voicemail said (it was 6am). Dumb me that listened to him and went ahead and called at 6am because I figured it's a Saturday and at that time I for sure I'm going to get a voicemail. Well I did and didn't leave a message sice I just wanted to catch her name. The problem is that it seems to be a cellphone because she said to leave a voicemail or a text message! I am dying of embarrassment  I think I really messed up my chances. Now she will see my number at 6am! How unprofessional  Anyways, I am just venting here and wondering if anyone has any ideas what to do next? Can I still fix this?

Call back Monday morning, you should be fine.

Yeah I'm planning on it. I'm just so nervous and mad at my self for missing that call :cry:. I was also wondering what if she doesn't pick on on Monday? When should I call back then? I don't want to seem desperate.

Don't worry. Call Monday. Maybe you'll get lucky and she'll call you on Sunday. (I've done the same thing - calling at 9pm or 6am and expecting the person not to be there so I could listen to the message/leave a message and - surprise - the person answered b/c it was a cell phone.) No worries!

I once received a call on a Saturday about a job and was told that they deliberately called on Saturday to see if they could get hold of me. Answering the phone that time (I usually don't answer the phone) helped me to get that particular job. That was way back in the days before cell phones. I have found out that cell phones, no matter what the carrier or the brand of phone or other input into the equation, are definitely NOT reliable. I make allowances for this and have been tempted to go back to using a landline for those "can't miss" calls. I don't like that I am constantly checking the cell phone for missed calls. When the call doesn't even go to the phone, I still miss the call, so I'm not solving the problem by being glued to the phone!

I am definitely beating my self over it because i was thinking the same thing :( I just hope that they don't cross me out of their "maybe" list. Here in Miami they have plenty of other candidates to chose from but I would really love to work for that hospital. I swear when I found out my cellphone failed me I almost slammed it against the floor. I can't believe that I missed the call when my cellphone was with me at that time and to make matters worst I didn't get the voicemail until 8 hours later! How ridiculous is that!

Thank you for your words of encouragement :)

that makes me feel better and it gives me some hope. I will call first thing Monday. I just hope she picks up. If not then I guess I'll drive over there and see if I can speak to them directly. I have to do whatever it takes to make up for the missed call. At least until they flat out deny me

Holy cow, if you're looking for a job there is no such thing as an *unimportant* call from HR, voice mail or not! They're ALL important!!

Call back right now.

RIGHT THIS SECOND.

Leave a voicemail explaining very briefly that the voicemail didn't show up but that you're eager to speak with him/her. State some specific times Monday morning that you will be available. Plan to call back on Monday before 11 am.

And ALWAYS call back if you see a call from a known HR/NM/recruiter, even if there's no voicemail. All you have to do is say that you saw the call, that you're having trouble with your voicemail, and that you're not sure if you missed a message so you're following up because you are so excited about the opportunity there.

Not a concern; she knows the drill.

I know someone has already said this but whenever HR calls you, it's for a reason. Voicemail or not. Keep that in mind for whenever you do work for a hospital.

Call them back on Monday morning.
