Just getting the Microbiology thread started for those of us taking it this summer :) Let's introduce ourselves. I'm sure we may recognize each other from the A&P thread and hopefully there will be some new students too!
I'm Jennifer, married with 3 kids (11,6,2). I'm starting the nursing program in August and other than my humanities elective, I'll be ALL DONE with gen. ed. courses. I've been a SAHM for 7 years but am considering a PT summer job to help pay for expenses (mine and DD's - middle school is expensive between cheerleading ($305), flute ($700!!) and the newly mandated uniforms ). Oh and I have been a mystery shopper for 7 years too which basically helps us get out and do stuff that we otherwise wouldn't be able to afford.
My classes start May 17. I'm taking Micro Tues, Wed, Thurs from 6-9 (lecture from 6-7:20, lab from 7:30-9.) I'm also taking English 102 online. YUCK. I don't want to write papers this summer. We're using Tortoro's book in Micro, BTW.
I really have no idea what to expect for this course. I did very well in A&P 1 and 2 (A :balloons: ) but am feeling a bit burnt out - having only 1 week off between spring and summer semester is not enough. We have the entire week of July 4th off for break, and DH and I are surprising our kids with a week in Disneyworld We can't wait!! I spend way too much time on the DIS boards and planning our trip:p
Achoo, you're almost there!! I seriously started to lose motivation by the last week. lol..studying for the final was painful! Just think, in 7 days this class will be history:) You can do it!!
Thanks. I am doing really well ( 100.1%) so I can screw up some on the final and still do well. It's nice to have a cushion because I have lost ALL motivation LOL
horray! I emailed my instructor for my final grade.....103%!!!! I never would have thought I could pull of that kind of a grade in an 8 week micro class. lol....too bad that because of our grading system, it will show up as an A and not and A+....oh well, I'll take it:) Good luck on your final Achoo! I know you'll pull off an A++++ too:)

Aww thanks.
Awesome job!!!! :balloons:
Those of you who are done, are SO lucky! We have 2 labs, and 3 lectures left. After our test last week, I'm getting a B, but I might be able to pull it back up to an A. Our instructor just loves to give crazy test questions, which trick the entire class! Who would have thought I'd get A's in the hard classes, and a B in the supposed easy class! Anyway, I have a question for you...
We are doing our unknown. We have to do the catalase test. Can you do the test directly on PEA or MacConkey's? I know you can't do it on Blood, because the blood in the agar will reacte with the H2O2, so we have to do it on a slide.
Any thoughts? As far as I know, there is no blood in either of these two, so I think we can just do the test on the media, but I'm not sure.
Thanks in advance!
Heather
A catalase test can either be done on a clean slide, using a wooden stick to inoculate on it. Then drop about 3 drops of Hydrogen Peroxide on it.
OR..... After making a new working stock, you can use what is left of your new working stock to perform the catalase test. (NA or TSA work) We only used an agar plate for our original culture, then inoculated in a streak and stab method on NA or TSA tubes to grow our working and reserve stocks.
Hope this helps, or someone else can add to it. Good luck on your A.

I'm a little behind on this thread. :chuckle
I'm taking Micro online, and I think that I made a good choice. I'm also using Tortura, and the class isn't too bad. I had a midterm last week, and the light at the end of the tunnel is getting brighter.
BTW, I have no kids. :rotfl:
