Microbiology study group spring 2009

Published

Just wanted to Start a study group for spring semester .I thought it will also be fun to give pop questions for us to make up from our classes and answer to help us learn more. Hope to hear from u guys

Hi Everyone how is everything going in my class we miss school wed because of snow so that means double the labs for all my science classes in microbiology were on chapter four on different stains.

We've had 2 quizzes and our first exam in the lecture portion of micro. In the lab we've only had 2 quizzes. I was bummed, as I only got a 88% for the exam, but a felt a little better when I found out the class average was in the high 70's. At least now I have a better idea of how the teacher forms his tests and how to study for them, but I know the material is only going to get harder.

We have spent the last week focusing on Chapter 5 in the Tortora, Funke, & Case Micro book which covers microbial metabolism. I feel a bit overwhelmed in this section, seems like quite a bit to remember. Anyone else struggling with this part?

I'm planning to start Chapter 5 tomorrow. (Right now I'm getting my notes and study guides ready for Ch1-4 because our midterm is next week.)

Clinical application question (From Ch2 of Tortora, Funke, Case): The antibiotic amphotericin B causes leaks in cells by combining with sterols in the plasma membrane. would you expect to use amphotericin B against a bacterial infection? A fungal infection? Offer a reason why amphotericin B has severe side effects in humans.

I just had my first micro exam this past week and already have my results: 99%!! Yaay! Studying every single day really does pay off :) Good luck to the rest of you on your first exam/quiz!

That is awesome!!!

Wow my class is so behind. It was probably the two snow days...we are still in the intro portion about basic functions of microorganisms, contributions of various people (leewenhoek, pasteur, tyndall). my first test is in week and half. im at university of texas-arlington...

HI guys, I have a few question's that i'm trying to clear up for my first exam and was hoping somebody could help out.

1) Do spiral bacteria have a cytoskeleton?

2) Are white blood cells examples of peroxisomes or lysosomes?

3) Does aerobic and anaerobic respiration give off the same amount of energy?

4) Does fermentation use glycolysis and the krebs cycle? Or just glycolysis?

Thanks

1) hmmm...I'm not sure

2) I'm going to guess lysosomes

3) no - aerobic reactions produce 38 ATP in prokaryotes and 36 ATP in eukaryotes. Anaerobic reactions produce variable amounts of ATP, more than 2, fewer than 38.

4) just glycolysis

Thanks a lot for your help, i appreciate it!
