Microbiology online?

So... I've pretty much screwed up on microbiolgy this semester (pretty much can only pull out a C if I'm lucky) and I need to retake it before I apply to pull up the C for the admissions... they only offer Microbiology next semester as an online course.

A) I'm retaking it, so I would have seen the material before.

B) It's the same teacher so I already have her lecture notes even though theres not a lecture.

C) I took 2 online courses last smester and got A's.

With that being said, NO ONE thinks it's a good idea for me to take it online. They tell me to wait to apply until I can retake it in the classroom.

What do you think? :paw:

Listen to me...For the love of all the greater good of mankind and in the whole world...Please DO NOT take micorbiology as an online course! any science or math course online is not a good idea in the first place. Online classes take the utmost discipline. If you struggled the first time the best place for you to be is in the class room getting a visual understanding and hearing the lecture and in class discussion. I taped my micro lectures and rewrote the notes, make flash cards learn them by name and by definition. keep your viruses organized (enveloped, spikes, RNA, etc.) Micro cannot be passed without adequate study time...study, study, study, and study. I know it's a pain to go through it all over again but take it from someone who got a A in Micro...I took a regular Biology class online and got a C.

I have a different experience. I found going to class was more distracting and in A&P I turned a D into an A by going from in class to online. I think it is all on how you study and how easily you get distracted. I am currently taking A&P II online and plan on taking Micro online next semester. You've done well in other online classes so you obviously have the discipline it takes, plus if it is the same teacher you know how she tests. I say go for it!

I also have to agree that online through CCCOnline has worked for me. Now granted I am in the middle of my first online class, General Bio (Eng too, but I am focusing on the science here). But, I am finding the class relatively easy, same with the labs and I will have an A unless the ceiling falls in or our house implodes. And for some background, I haven't been in school in 20+ years. I will be taking all my pre-reqs online, except for organic & biochem which I can't find an online one for. If you are disciplined to follow a schedule (which you have to for school anyway) and don't need a lot of one on one, then you should do just fine. Good luck however you decide to pursue it, you can do it!

I agree with RN2BMU2008. Don't take science classes on-line. I made the mistake and took Chemistry on-line because I had been taken almost everything else on-line and getting As.... science is different. But good luck!

As you can see from the responses to this thread different people have different learning styles. For that reason the online medium works well for some people and not for others. If you've already done well in other online classes it sounds like you learn well in that medium and therefore you'd do well in an online microbiology class. Online class works very well for me. Instead of worrying about having to drive across town after work, traffic, parking, missing things the professor said, distracting classmates, etc., etc. you get to focus in on the only thing that matters - learning the material. If you have questions you'd have your professor and possibly a tutor just an email away to clear them up. e.g. I have professors who respond to emails within minutes at night and on Saturday mornings. You aren't likely to get that kind of direct communication on campus and that's bound to improve your grade. The way online classes such as micro work at my school you have in person labs a couple of Saturdays of the semester so your learning experience would not be compromised by the absence of labs.

I have just signed up for an online Microbiology course at Ocean County College (NJ). The students rave about their online science courses.

My girfriend took the A&P I and A&P II courses over the summer and aced both. She took the Human Anatomy and Physiology Society (HAPS) exam and they found the students who take A&P I and II online did two points better than those who took it face-to-face. Go figure.

I will let you know how I make out.

I'm just getting done with A&P I and Micro online and I loved it. It's looking like A's in both unless I screw up the final test. You will like the online experience!

I'm looking into taking Microbiology online also. I have done well in my other online classes and I managed to pull a C in college algebra BUT I KNOW I would have done MUCH better if I had studied appropriately as evidenced by my grade on the only test during the semester that I actually studied for.

Also I took accounting online and got a C .. and I took accounting 2 in the classroom (it was a continuation of 1 and we used the same book) and I also got a C in the classroom. So the medium clearly didn't make a difference.

I like online classes because for every test and quiz I am able to use my text book, something I find helps me greatly.

That being said I do NOT plan on taking Anatomy / Physiology online (or maybe I should I really don't know) but either way and either grade you received .. what was the format like? What kind of assignments did you have? I'm assuming you had a class that required you to meet at the school for the lab correct? But other than that, were you able to find the answers to your tests and quizzes in your book? Did the course come with power points or video lectures?
