Need encouragement for General Biology class

I agree with all of you. The professor really does make the difference and I have found "Rate My Professor dot COM" to be right on the money. I can't afford to waste money taking someone who is a poor professor to begin with. If your professor has a good rating that should give you the confidence you need! Jersey Nursing Girl

Looking for an online Micro class

hey natalio, i am just finishing the microbiology online course at ocean county college (toms river, nj) and i have had a wonderful experience. the professor really puts a clinical focus on micro and goes over all of the organisms we will see in the hospital. there is a summer first five week may 18, 2009 - june 23, 2009 with six seats left. the summer second five week, june 24, 2009 - july 28, 2009 just closed and i don't know if they will open another. here is the website for the biol 232 microbiology dl course: http://www.ocean.edu/micro.htm they have a lab included that is a lot of fun. i really enjoyed learning how to become an expert using the microscope. the course is accepted by nearly all nursing programs. everybody loves the fact that they can get the whole thing out of the way in late spring and have the summer off. you can contact the registration and records office at 732 255-0304. you need to make sure that you tell them you are from out-of-state. be prepared to pay for the course when you register. i agree with sand dollar, i have heard good things about ccconline also but i can tell you first hand that the course is outstanding at occ. i am pretty confident i have an "a" but i did work hard for it. i have taken several online courses but this by far was the best! if you take it, you will not be sorry! jersey nursing girl

Jersey Shore University Medical Center or Community medical center?

You lucky duck! I would agree with everyone else. Meridian has an outstanding reputation. I have a friend who was just laid off at St. Barnabas Community Medical Center and there are rumors that they might be selling Kimball. Jersey Nursing Girl

Summer Microbiology Online Course at Ocean County College

msdeannah, here is the reply that i sent to your other post. you may find cheaper, you may not find better. i think its more than worth it! i still think its a bargain! i think you are right about the cost for an out-of-state student. its about $900+ for tuition and fees for a 4 credit science course and about ~ $500 for book, microscope and labpaq. most of the schools who offer online science courses with the lab use labpaqs from hands-on labs, inc. in colorado. they all go for the same price. http://www.labpaq.com/kd-microbiologykit.htm http://www.labpaq.com/600x-microscoe-adjustable-stage thats going to run you close to $500 no matter where you go. i see you are from connecticut. at one of your less expensive state universities (wcsu) instate tuition is $360.00 per credit hour plus $50.00 online fee. thats not the out-of-state rate!! it costs me at least $400 in gasoline just to commute to school in a given semester. the advantage of taking the online science (microbiology) when i want and where i want with an outstanding professor is "priceless." i have kids and work nearly full time. it is worth the extra money to me. i actually bought the digital eye piece for my microscope for $59. it made doing the labs so easy! i could snap a picture of what i was looking at and send it with the lab report. http://www.labpaq.com/usb-digital-microscope-eypiece-camera i am just about finished with my microbiology online course at ocean county college and i think i have an "a" in the bank. time is money to me. i do not have a lot of time. so this really works for me. it is more than worth it! i still love the online microbiology course and highly recommend it! even if you have to pay the out-of-state differential, i think it is worth it. its the best online course i have ever taken! the second five week has closed. you can still get into the first five weelk that begins may 18th. http://www.ocean.edu/academics/programs_of_study/science/microbiologyonline.htm still in love with it, jersey nursing girl

  6. I am hearning that once you are finishing up and in the process of passing the NCLEX-RN you should look for an externship as a way to "get a foot in the door." It is a tough market place for new grads in New Jersey right now. I never really understood the difference between and externship and an internship. How long to they last? Do they give you any pay or a stipend? Do you have to pay them (joking I hope)? How do you set them up? Please help me out! Jersey Nursing Girl

late start summer term for prereqs in Chicago?

Liu2, Take them all online and never leave home! You can get all of your pre-requisites out of the way this summer at Ocean County College in Toms River NJ. Its a local community college that offers virtually every nursing prerequisite totally online. It is possible to take your Math, English, Psych, A&P I &II, Micro all online this summer. Then go to the nursing program of your choosing. Their credits seem to transfer all over. http://www.ocean.edu/academics/programs_of_study/science/ScienceatOceanCountyCollege.htm http://www.ocean.edu/academics/programs_of_study/Nursing/curriculum.htm I think you do the same with CCCOnline as well. http://www.ccconline.org/ Good Luck, Jersey Nursing Girl
  8. Does anyone know about the new Georgian Court - Meridian Health School of Nursing in Ocean County, New Jersey? I was planning on going to the One Day per Week Program at Ocean County College and start courses for my BSN at Kean @ Ocean (part of Kean University on OCC's campus). I have heard that if you work for one of Meridian Health's facilities they will give you a scholarship to pay for all 4 years at Georgian Court - Meridian Health School of Nursing. I know Georgian Court University is private and 3 to 4 times the cost of the OCC/Kean University program, but if Meridian Health is picking up the tab, it might be another option for me. Please let me know if you know anything about this new program. Thanks, Jersey Nursing Girl

OCC just opened another Microbiology Online section for May 2009 !!!

Gourley Gal, There are bulletin boards both in the Ocean County College Hiering Science Building and the Nursing Building where you can post a note for a microscope. You absolutely need one with the oil immersion lens because that is the only way you get to see the bacteria. There are so many students taking A&P I and II and Microbiology Online that I think you will get a hit almost immediately. I always see them listed on eBay as well. However, the microscope only goes for around $150 new from Hands-on Labs, Inc. If you buy it from them, you can always return it if you have a problem. I had a bad mechanical stage and they replaced it right away. Here is the website for the Microbiology Online Course at OCC: http://www.ocean.edu/academics/programs_of_study/science/MicrobiologyOnline.htm It has all the links to exactly what you need for the course. If anyone out there has a microscope for sale, please help Gourley Gal out. Jersey Nursing Girl

Financial Aid for Nursing school in NJ??

Jdesantis00 I would recommend not using or even mentioning your previous college experience if you did poorly and it was from another college. I have many friends who are trying to dig themselves out of a "gpa graveyard" when they could have "started fresh." The school I am going to demands a gpa of 2.7 in order to get in. Many students have matured and now are ready for nursing school but their bad grades continue to haunt them. If it means taking one or two classes over again, I would do it to have a decent gpa. I am not sure how this would impact financial aid if you are paying off a loan and want to delay paying on the loan. I hope I didn't complicate the problem. Like you I am working my way through nursing school. Jersey Nursing Girl

OCC just opened another Microbiology Online section for May 2009 !!!

Gourley Gal, I think you can do it in five weeks! I would recommend doubling up on the labs. I have seen students knock off three labs in a weekend so I do not think it would be that difficult. Be prepared to pay cash on the barrel when you register at for the Microbiology Online Course at Ocean County College. I would recommend ordering the LabPaq and the book a bit ahead of time. Getting it out of the way now and having the whole summer off sounds like a motivation to make it happen! The nice thing that I found with the online course is that you can work, take care of the kids and get the course out of the way. I am really enjoying the course. Do not delay. There are only 8 seats left in the May 18th to June 23rd class (Summer First Five Week). Thanks Jersey Nursing Girl

    Microbiology Online Should I?

Chloecat15, Take the Microbiology Online Course at Ocean County College and you will love it! I am taking it now and it is the best course I have ever taken. I can't say enough good about it. You can actually sign up for their Summer First Five Week which starts in mid May and ends in late June. You can get it out of the way and have the rest of your summer off. My class is filled with students taking it from other schools all over the United States. Here is the website for the Microbiology Online Course: http://www.ocean.edu/academics/programs_of_study/science/MicrobiologyOnline.htm Here is the website to register: http://www.ocean.edu/academics/programs_of_study/science/OnlineCourseRegistrationforScience.htm Thanks Jersey Nursing Girl

    Online Courses Micro, A+P transferable?

LVNfairy, The A&P I, A&P II and Microbiology all transfer to other nursing programs. I am in their Microbiology Online course right now and over half of the students in the course are nursing students from other states. They are a regionally acredited college whose courses are just about acccepted by everyone. The transcript does not say if it is an online course or a face-to-face course so use a "don't ask don't tell strategy" and you should be fine. Both the online and face-to-face courses are taught to the same syllabus and both include a laboratory. The vast majority of colleges that teach online courses do not list that it is an online course on their transcripts. Here is a link to their A&P online courses: http://www.ocean.edu/academics/programs_of_study/science/AP_Online.htm http://www.ocean.edu/academics/programs_of_study/science/APII_Online.htm Here is a link to their Microbiology Online Course: http://www.ocean.edu/academics/programs_of_study/science/MicrobiologyOnline.htm Here is a link to register: http://www.ocean.edu/academics/programs_of_study/science/OnlineCourseRegistrationforScience.htm You can take them all this summer and get them out of the way for the Fall semester. online chemistry class

Try either Introductory Chemistry CHEM 180 or General Chemistry I CHEM 181 at Ocean County College in Toms River NJ. Both just received Quality Matters desgnation which is a "Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval" for online courses. It is totally online and taught by a professor who is also a nurse. My girlfriend is in the course now and she loves the professor because she keeps relating chemistry to nursing in things like doseage calculations and buffers for IVs etc. http://www.ocean.edu/academics/programs_of_study/science/IntroductoryChemistryOnline.htm http://www.ocean.edu/academics/programs_of_study/science/GeneralChemistryIOnline.htm OCC has become a real powerhouse for delivering science courses realated to nursing online such as A&P I and II. I am taking their Microbiology online course this semester and really love it. Check out the professors at "rate my professor dot com" I have always found that helpful. Jersey Nursing Girl

    MicroBio Online

Mikkirobbins21, I am still taking the course and will be finished in May. I have an A so far. Test are all taken online giving you just enough time to finish them. The test questions are scrambled and you are allowed to take the mid term and final over the course of a few days with the lock down browser. I would have to say that the tests are very fair and straight forward. Quizzes are frequent and open book and are designed to drive us to the text book. The professor focuses on the microorganisms that we will encounter in the real world day to day of a hospital. I really am learning a lot and it is the fun kind of learning about things we need to know about microbiology from real life situations. I can't say enough good about the course and the professor. I got stuck with a question about the lab and the professor called me up on the phone and walked me through it. I will let you know what my final grade is. I never thought that I would fall in love with an online science course because I always had to "really work at it" with science. If you try taking the 5 week course begining in May and ending in the end of June, you will really have to be on top of the course at least every other day. There are deadlines, but the best part for me is I can choose when I want to study and move things along. This is important when you work and are a single Mom. Try it; you will not be sorry, Jersey Nursing Girl
