Microbiology with Nursing 101??

Hello..so I have been accepted into the nursing program at my community college for the Fall 2016 semester. The only pre-requisite that I have not taken is Microbiology and I am required to have it completed with a C by the end of my first semester. This means that I can take it over the summer or with Nursing 101 In the Fall. My counselor recommended that I take it over the summer since first semester nursing courses are labor intensive as well as is Microbiology, but unfortunately my school does not offer financial aid for summer courses and I would need to pay for the class out of pocket. I really do not have the money nor the time off of work to take the summer course as it is only offered during the day 4 days a week and I am hoping to work full time up until I start in August. I was wondering if anyone has taken Microbiology with nursing 101 and was successful. any insight? is it doable? If I do not pass with a C than I am unable to move forward in the Spring with my second semester classes. HELP!

Congrats on getting into your program! That sounds like a really tough fall schedule. Of course it would be ideal if you could take microbiology before nursing school starts, but you do what you have to do. I haven't started my nursing program yet (I start in the fall as well), so I can't comment from experience. I am trying to get a feel for what to expect in the fall and the consensus seems to be that nursing school is really tough, and can be a big adjustment in terms of course rigor. I am getting a little scared myself, but I think that determination can carry a person a long way. If you truly cannot make the course work this summer, it will be harder for you in the fall, but, as long as there aren't scheduling conflicts between the classes, you should be able to do it. I took Micro in the summer and got an A with no trouble, but then it was my only class. The one thing you have going for you is that in a fall course, you have twice as much time to digest the material as a summer course. Best of luck to you!

I would suck it up if possible and take it over the summer. I am in the same situation with my Pharmacology class and while I much rather use Financial aid and take it in the fall, I'm not.

Talk to your business office or dean. I don't have to pay for the entire class up front, I'm paying about $50-100 every time I get paid.

How long is the course? I took the one that is over a short 4 weeks so that I could work full time the rest of the summer.

I could not imagine taking a heavy science class with Nursing 101, BUT if you have no kids and are super organized it's possible.

It is a 5 week course. unfortunately they do not offer payment plans for the summer either...ugh, but you are right, I am very worried about taking these two classes together, just not sure what to do.

I took both Micro and Nursing Fundamentals in the same semester last Fall. While it was definitely challenging, it was very doable. I found that a lot of the infection control parts of fundamentals correlated well with what we were learning in Micro and vice versa, which helped while studying for both classes and to reinforce the material. I did fine in both classes, so don't be discouraged if you need to take both at the same time. You can do it! :)

It's not a formal payment plan. I actually went and spoke to the dean and she basically was like, as long as you make payments, no big deal. It's not like they send you to collections or even prevents me from registering for fall classes. Only thing is if I don't pay it they won't send out any transcripts.

I am going to go to the school next week and see what I can work out. I have been shut down so far by the staff in the business office. They're pretty strict on summer classes being paid in full, but it won't hurt to attempt to reach someone higher in the chain of command.

I took Micro my first semester of nursing school (so Fundamentals, Assessment, and Clinical of course), and it was rough. I got through it, but I wish I'd been able to really focus on that class as I was very fascinated by the subject matter, to the point that I'd like to study immunology further.

My college had a Micro section that was set aside specifically for nursing students so it would fit with our other nursing classes, which was fabulous.

It was an incredibly challenging semester, I won't lie, but if you have good study habits, it's possible. If you're able to find a way to pay for the summer class, though, I'd definitely try to make that happen.

Congrats on your acceptance! While I start my program this fall as well, I honestly think that microbiology was almost more important as far as information covered than A&P 1 and 2. That being said, If you could swing it, I would try to take it over the summer. That way you could focus on learning this information and it will really help you when you start in the fall. Of course, if it's not doable for you than it will work out just fine taking it with your first round of nursing classes as well.

I took chem with three other nursing courses, but it wasn't my first semester. The first semester, although fairly basic, is rough because everything is new. I personally would take Micro with Nursing 101 because I'm very strong in science courses and I know I could pass both with an A. So I would say it depends on what type of student you are.

I failed first semester of the RN program because I took microbiology with it. I'm sure I would of passed if I cleared it before hand. Right now I just finished my LPN and reapplying for the RN program. I would push back your nursing classes until you get it cleared. It has taken me 3 years to get back into the RN program because of that stupid class.
