Microbiology and Anatomy and Physiology II online?

Published

Hello everyone, I'm sorry if you get this question all of the time, but I'm aiming to get into a local community college in Memphis, TN, and need 2 courses by October 15th. I need (not necessarily need, but it would greatly increase my chances of acceptance) to take Anatomy and Physiology 2, and Microbiology. I thought I could have them done by december, in order to have them ready for spring, as some schools do, but now they are saying i need them completed by October 15th I believe it is. I have found both courses online at Colorodo Community College Online, but since I live in TN, I don't know if I can even take them, much less if the school I'm looking at will accept them. Does anyone know of schools online that offer these two courses, to have them done by October? CCCO has it by then, but I'm not sure it would work. Any help would GREATLY be appreciated! thank you

I can't imagine a nursing program (I'm assuming that's what you're going to school for) accepting those courses without a lab component. If those online classes are a hybrid and require you to take lab on campus, then obviously you will have to live close enough to do that. Otherwise, make real sure that your program, whatever it is, will accept those classes without lab.

Second GM2RN. I don't know a nursing program that will take those classes as didactic only. Make sure you do your research.

OP - I just re-read your post. You said that you don't actually NEED A&P and Micro, but any nursing program that I know of requires both. What program are trying to get into at your community college?

hey guys. the A & P I am taking now has a lab component to it, mostly virtual things and items you set up at home. I checked it out ahead of time to be sure it qualifies BIOL 2010, which is what most colleges/universities require around here. The program I'm applying to is an associate's in nursing at Southwest Tennessee Community College, which is supposed to be a good program. They don't have pre-requisites, per se, the basic A&P I and II/microbiology/statistics, etc. are in the actual AASN track for Nursing. BUT it increases your chances greatly of getting in if you score well in those 3 classes. I have been under the impression that I could finish the classes in december and still have them considered, but I'm just finding out you have to have them finished by mid-october. which basically means, so far, that I'd pretty much have to have them finished by this summer... unless anyone has any other ideas?

Sorry, no. I know of no classes that you can finish by October unless they are summer classes.

Unless they are hands-on with a lab, don't do them. There is no other learning then the kind you get when you have your hands deep into a cat clearing out the vascular system to really see how everything functions.

Anything nursing/biology related online, to me, is a joke. That's like saying that you are going through Nursing school and learning how to insert an IV on a virtual patient. Hands-on is the way to go.

IMO, this whole program sounds fishy. How can you have virtual labs? Microbiology teaches you how to obtain cultures, proper way of handling microbes, etc. A&P I and II *HAVE* to have some sort of dissection--what is the point of even doing a dissection if you aren't physically doing it? And how can those classes be presented IN the program and not BEFORE? I'm not sure, but it just sounds kind of opposite of the mainstream nursing programs.

This is a good questions for the student forum. You might get different answers there as there are always other students looking for or dealing with the same thing you are. :)

Rio Salado college offers online Microbiology and A&P (both I and II). The college is part of the Maricopa community college network (Phoenix area) and the classes are accepted as prerequisites by most other community colleges. I took all of my science prereqs online through them for my ADN program.

I have not found that taking these classes online has hindered my skills as a nurse in anyway, and I know all of my nursing supervisors would agree.

The other benefit to Rio Salado is that they have rolling enrollment, with new classes starting every few weeks.

I actually spoke with many nursing schools about this option before I buckled and took the classes in person. Almost ALL schools require that you have an in person lab. In hindsight, I can understand why: the labs provided me with the context for understanding and applying (as an RN) the scientific logic behind our interventions.

ccconline classes in the fall won't be over until mid December, and Summer semester has already started, sorry.

If you still want to take them, check they are accepted by your school. Since the parent schools of ccconline are accredited, there really shouldn't be a problem. You get lab kits to do, and aren't done online. The classes don't even show up as being online, you just might have to explain how you did them out of state.

Good luck.

I took some developmental psych and nutrition through Rio Salado and loved it. In fact I took the accelerated version of each so I could work on them one at a time but still finish both within a semester.

That being said I can't imagine trying to take micro and A&P II online. Hands on is better. If I understand correctly you can do virtual labs and set some stuff up at home. Micro is definately a lab with lots of hands on stuff and I don't really know what you would be able to do safely at home. A&P is probably more possible on line but I liked being able to see things more 3D and taking apart the models and putting them back together. While pictures of dissection help there is nothing like cutting and touching for yourself. Obviously if the school takes it and this is your only option go for it online.

I've taken A&P I&II during a summer session so you may be able to find a "live" class for that and maybe even Micro.
