hi, i wanted to know are there any mdc students who know any information on the nursing program. i have all my requirements and all i need is chemistry. i am trying to apply to the accelerated program and would like to know if anyone here can give me a guide on my chances of getting in. any info will be greatly appreciated!:smiletea:

Dental school sounds fantastic, but you have to do what is in your heart. Actually I am only 21, but I already have two kids....so it is not the same. I would do the CRNA if life would permit me to do it, but I do not making plans, because somehow if they do not turn out perfect....I feel disappointed. I would rather see when I get there. I got prego when I was graduating from high school, but I never stopped going to school. My friends that are in FIU all get freacked out at the idea of having so much on one plate. I guess you get use to what you have. When you get into nursing you are going to LOVE it...or some of it. At least the beg is passible. You will see. It is a nice experience. And congrats on only being 20 and having accomplished so much in school. Sometimes us young people do not take the wonderful opportunitys that come our way, and we just waste away with not much done. So congrats again! And the best of luck.

thx..and thats great with two kids and your in nursing school. Yea dental school does sound great, but not when you have to leave alone for 4 years and take out loans of minimum of 300,000. I wasn't up for that anymore and i always liked nursing so i found out about the one year programs to become an rn and yes i hope my goal to be a crna becomes a reality. Well keep me updated how nursing school goes and the nclex and all that

Has anyone in their 1st sem. done their first NUR1025C practical on vital signs?!?! How did you do???

Mines is coming up on Thursday...feeling pretty confident though!

:up::heartbeat

My vital sign is tomorrow!!!!!!!!! I am not feeling confident, and I feel like I am going to have a heart attack. I hate to be tested really. I have not even practiced today!!!!!!!! I just want to shoot myself. Anyway the only thing that worries me is the know BP thing. Sometimes I get confused on exactly where it stopped, but I mean I think I will be ok, and just in case I do not pass on the first attempt I am not going to kill myself. I always have a second time, but that is if worse comes to worse, and I am actually hoping it does not get to that. I always get a bit nervous before a quiz or a test, but when I am doing it I do fine. Therefore I just need to remember to breath.

I had my vitals skills test today and passed. What a relief! I was definitely nervous about it. Once I got in the room I calmed down a little bit though and just went through all the steps that I needed to calmly. But yeah, the blood pressure was what I was nervous about. The important thing is to take your time. Don't rush, because that is when mistakes are made. Good luck.

Hi there,

Hope all is well in Nursing Land. I am still anxiously waiting the letter from Miami Dade College. I haven't the slightest idea on when they are supposed to mail them out but I would assume it is soon. The semester is supposed to start early January so I would think they would have to send them out at least by November right? Anyone out there have any experience or insight on this? I know the Fall Semester ends on December 18 and campus is closed during that time; so that closes the window in even further.

Also, for those of you currently in your first semester, would you be able to provide me with the list of books that are required for the 1st semester. I purchased a Nursing Fundamentals book (because it was cheap on eBay) to get some pre-emptive reading done. I would appreciate if I got a feel of what the book situation was going to look like. Also, any insight on what to expect from the "Orientation" (im thinking positively here!) would be helpful.

Thanks again to those of you that continue to provide valuable advice and/or insight on this forum. Your attention is greatly appreciated!

I know how you feel. I was at this point last year and I must agree that waiting is the worst!!! The date that letters go out varies by program. I applied for both the bridge and generic program. I got my acceptance letter for the bridge program the second week of October and I got the letter for the generic program 1-3 weeks after that. Orientation dates for the bridge and generic options are seperate also.

I would hold off on buying books until you go to orientation because they tend to update the books quite often and the books for the generic and bridge programs may not be the same. They will give you a book list based on your program option that will show you all the books that you need for the entire length of the program. Our orientation was in mid November so we had plenty of time to get our books.

I am currently in my third and final semester of the bridge option (online). If you or anyone else need insight feel free to let me know.

Good luck,

Nips

Phoenix,

I am currently in my first semester doing the generic program at MDC. I am not trying to make you downhearted but, I have to tell you the truth. You asked about orientation. It was a complete and utter JOKE. It was the most unorganized thing you have ever saw and I walked away from it learning absolutely NOTHING that I didn't already know. As far as the books go, Nips is exactly right. The book list will vary depending on your program. I can tell you this. For the generic program, My books for the first semester totalled about $850. The list was very extensive, I think I bought about 10 to 12 books that were required. But, the good thing is you use many of the same books throughout the program and only have to buy a few more for the remaining 3 semesters. I did not recieve any financial aid, so everything that I bought for school came out of my pocket. You will also have to buy the Uniform Scrub top for clinicals ($50.00), white pants for clinicals, Completely White shoes, Stethoscope (Mine was $95.00), Penlight ($5.00).....One of the absolute biggest expenses of the whole deal (other than tuition and books, if you don't have health insurance) is the cost of the doctors appointments and immunizations that you will have to recieve. Hep B, 5 panel Drug Test, 2 PPD's (tuberculosis testing), MMR, Chickenpox, and also you have to pay for a background check through MDC School of Justice (I think it was about $55.00) Don't buy too much until you know for sure that you get accepted. It will get expensive REALLY quick and you will want to make sure that you have all the right things and right editions to required books. GOOD LUCK! Aren't you in Iraq? I think i remember you saying previously you were in the Armed forces. I could be wrong. If I am then disregard this. If I'm not... then......THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR ALL THAT YOU DO! GOD BLESS YOU AND GOD BLESS THE UNITED STATES!!!

hey thanks for the info. This is exactly what I was looking for. Could you elaborate on the 2 PPDs. I work in an occupational health clinic (in Iraq) so I am familiar with the PPDs, but why two? Also, in what intervals do they want them in. Are the vaccines you mentioned all we'll need? It would be very helpful to know exactly since I would be able to get those taken care of before I leave here. As for the 5 panel drug test, where would you go get one of those done? We do those here but due to the sensitivity of the test, I know they will not accept just "any" test. Aside from that, I guess I will stash away the 55 bucks for the background check.

Although I have not been accepted yet, I like to be prepared. Especially since the transition I have to make will be a large one. I want to get as much of the small stuff out of the way.

Thanks again!

Hey Phoenix,

You asked about the 2 PPD's. Why two? I don't know. That is just what is required. Two consecutive TB Skin Tests are required. They can be repeated a minimum of 3 days apart. They have to be performed within the last three months to be considered recent. The Hep B vaccine is highly recommended but not required. Varicella and MMR are the only ones that I THINK are totally required as far as immunizations go. You probably got those when you were born. Check with your parents. I was able to find a record of mine that I recieved when I was 1 1/2 yrs old. They have to be given at 12 months of age or later. You can also provide proof of a blood titer. I would HIGHLY recommend doing that first. Im not very big on getting medicines that I don't really need. If you decide to get these now. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE RECORDS. After you get accepted into NS, they will send you a form that has to be completely filled out by either a M.D. ARNP, or PA. The drug test is just a routine urine test. It checks for Amphetamines, cocaine, marijuana, opiates, and phencyclidine. You should be able to have this done at any doctors office or even clinic. I double checked for you about the fingerprint and background check. It was exactly $46.00. Good Luck and Take Care!

ASH

Thanks again.

Luckily, I have all my vaccinations and records. My mother is one of those parents that kept everything important in its original form. Plus, Ive been through medic school and work in environments where proof of vaccinations have to furnished frequently. The PPD information is extremely helpful because I can get that done here, easily. Thanks.

I have a lot of time on my hands here, so all I think about is school and planning for the day I get accepted. I know there is possibility that I may not, but I prefer to stay optimistic.

If and when I am accepted, I will have to rush to get out of here. Pack my stuff, quit my job, fly across the Atlantic, re-unite with my family etc. It's a lot to do when you factor in that this news may come in at the end of Oct and the semester starts in Jan (not to mention that nothing gets done at Xmas break time). Sooo, I guess what Im trying to say is that the more "little" things I can get out of the way the better and smoother this transition will be for me.

Thanks again Southern Ash....

Please feel free to share any other important information, concerns or even gripes!!

All is welcome.

Thanks!
