Hi, I was wondering if anyone has applied to the MGHIHP new Accelerated BSN program? If so, what do you think your chances are of being accepted?

Hi Jalin and others who were accepted to MGHIHP,

Did any of your decide to not go there? And why? Just wondering. I am still on their wait list and Simmons said I will hear back this week. If I get into Simmons, I may just go there. Does anyone have any feedback on which program you would choose? Is anyone else waiting for Simmons and is this anyone's first choice? Thanks!

Hi Applying,

I did send in my deposit last week. You should check with MGH in a couple weeks to see if they have openings.

I know the wait is painful. Hang in there. Good luck.

Hi there. I'm planning to apply to MGH Accelerated BSN in November, so it would be for next year (May 2010) start date. I have a B.B.A. (double major) from UMass Amherst, and currently work in finance for an investment firm. I worked my way through my undergrad, while double majoring so my gpa for undergrad wasn't that great (2.75). I'm getting a 4.0 in my pre-reqs, so I am just wondering if those of you who have applied and gotten in think there's any chance I might get in w/ these credentials. I am worried my undergrad GPA isn't good enough :( I just worked 20hrs a week while taking 18 credits and double majoring...it was really hard and I got mostly B's and C's. The pre-reqs I'm taking now I am getting straight A's in. Any advice on what my best bet would be? What if I don't get into any accelerated programs, what should I do? Regular BSN? How would that work - as in how would my credits from undergrad and pre-req coursework transfer?

Thanks for the advice - good luck and congrats to all of you who got in!! :)

I think you will be fine. I also did not have the best GPA and was afraid to take the next step in life of grad school...but don't worry. Each school I spoke to told me the competition is fierce, but if you want to become a NP (RN in your case), you will get there! Luckily, most people who work as nurses understand life can be tough and people have ups and downs. Yes, the people with 4.0 and great healthcare experience may get in for sure but keep your head up! You will get there too. I am on the wait list at MGHIHP Direct Entry program! My GPA was around yours, and I also now have 4.0 in the prereqs. My GRE score was OK but you know what? I want to become a NP so badly! I have worked in healthcare and have volunteered for a hospital and done community service work, directly with patients. If you are passionate about anything in life, follow your heart!!! You should apply to many schools and do so ahead of time. I waited until last minute to find out NEU was rolling admission with only 24 spots...ha ha. So i did not get in, but I am waiting on Simmons and they have told me if I don't get in this yr, reapply next yr, continue with prereqs and working in healthcare, and I WILL achieve my goal. Every school keeps telling me that. Don't get discouraged! Our country needs nurses and you will be fine. Every nurse I have talked to tells me that it doesn't matter how well you do in school, it's your work ethic that counts and everything you do as a nurse you will learn on the job. Not in school! Of course nursing school will prepare you for the job and exam to become a RN, but really you will be fine. Don't give up! Good luck honeymist :-)

Hello All, I applied to MGH as well, I never heard back from them and they sent me a Letter telling me I was on a Waitlist. I then got an Interview with Umass Boston for their Accelerated BSN Program and was Accepted the Next Day. I am a 40 Year Old Male and have Never worked in a Hospital setting in my Life. The only Patient care is what I am doing now with my Father. He has a Colostomy, so I do most of his Ostomy care and have helped him with his Foley Catheter in the Past and all of his health related issues. I guess going through my Father's Medical issue's I gained a deeper respect about how Nurses impact People's lives. I have worked in Construction, Banking, Etc. I went Back to College at Age 31 and finished my Associates in Arts and then my Bachelor's in Psychology. I read these Forums about People getting turned down with Incredible G.P.A's and wonder why? My G.P.A. is about 3.4 throughout College. Sorry to Ramble :wink2:, but it figures when I receive my Acceptance to Umass, I receive a Call on March 24th from MGH Saying I have Been Accepted :banghead: I had gone from thinking there would be no Acceptance from anyone to 2 Nursing Schools. I am going to go to UMass and Hopefully it will be a Great Learning Experience. I actually liked the people at UMass and I am a Strong believer that no Matter what Issue's a School might have, as Long as you work hard toward your own Goals, things will work themselves out. I just wanted to Wish Everyong Luck on there Nursing School situations and would love to hear interesting stories from People going to Nursing school with very little experience. Good Luck. William

I wish folks would clearly identify which program they are talking about.

MGH has a brand-new accelerated Bachelors program, with a 10% acceptance rate, and a Direct Entry Masters program with an unknown acceptance rate. I suspect the MGH programs are excellent--not so sure why there seems to be a gold-rush towards MGH, though.

It's pricey, and my guess is that most of the Boston competitors are pretty top-notch, too.

ha ha ha

I know, why is everyone (including me) very fond of their program over others? I just seem to know more about the MGH Direct Entry program than any other, and they have impressed me so far! Thanks for your feedback as I am waiting on Simmons. Do you know any info on the Simmons Direct Entry program? I think billjeff1 was referrring to Accelerated BSN for Umass and am assuming acclerated BSN for MGHIHP also then? Anyways, which programs are you applying for and what is your top choice and why? Thanks!

billjeff1, are you referring to MGHIHP Accelerated BSN or Direct Entry into masters in nursing?? Thx! Any feedback on Simmons?

Hello, I was referring to the Accelerated BSN AT MGH. I don't know that much about Simmons. I applied to MGH, UMass Boston, Curry College, And The Mass College of Pharmacy 16 Month Accelerated BSN Program in Manchester, NH. I was Applying to those 4 Schools for there Accelerated BSN Program's. I got Waitlisted from Mgh, so I went to the Interview at Umass for the Accelerated Program. The Interview went Great, The Accelerated Program at Umass is New, and I have read Posts on this Site that they are Working " Kinks " out of this Program. I have to be Honest, the Price of Tuition at Umass played an Important role for me, as well as the Easy Commute from my House. I live in Cambridge, MA so getting there by the MBTA or my Car is great. I had heard that Umass was looking for a Diverse group of Students, I guess a 40 year old man with no Health care experience fit the bill :). Talking to other Student's in many of the Pre-requisite Classes that I had to take for applying to these Accelerated BSN Programs, were always worried about their G.P.A's not being High enough, and how difficult it was to be Accepted into these Accelerated Program's. I honestly didn't think I had a shot because of the Horror stories I had heard from my fellow students, but I went into my Interviews and was pleasantly suprised how things went. Not to be Stereotypical, but I think the 2 Ladies were sort of shocked to see me at First, I am a Big Guy, and my Work experience for the Past few years has been in Construction, but I was honest about why I wanted to pursue this field of Work, and how my Father's Medical Issues played a part in my decision making process. I never seen myself as a Nurse, :nurse: but life is full of changes, and at this Point in my life I want to do something that makes a difference in People's lives. But I'm not gonna Lie, I am Nervous as Heck! This is a Big Change for me, so wish me Luck, I am Gonna Need It!!!! Sorry to ramble, just hope everyone gets accepted to their schools of choice, Good Luck. billjeff1

My situation is similar to BillJeff's, though I am even older than he is. I am all over the map as far as programs go. I am one of the, apparently, 360 applicants on MGH's Accelerated BSN waiting list. I was accepted into the Simmons Direct Entry program, expect to hear from the Curry accelerated BSN program this week, and applied to a community college ASN program to keep my options open. I didn't have my prerequisites complete in time for the UMass accelerated program which is a shame because I live practically next door, and at my age you have to concern yourself with matters as mundane as return on $$ investment.

I don't have any inside information on the Simmons program other than they are not issuing their acceptances all at once as stated in their boilerplate email. A friend was accepted weeks ago; I just got my acceptance last week. As for my top choice: it's whoever will accept me!

Congrats Tozz! I applied for Direct Entry programs and was rejected at Simmons, wait-listed at MGHIHP and NEU. Unless I hear back bf September, I am not going to any of these schools in 09

:(

C'est la vie. I am still taking prereqs and will make sure to apply to more schools next yr..And perhaps some cheaper ones sounds nice! I heard Umass Boston has a great Accelerated BSN and it's cheaper than MGH, Simmons, or NEU. But I really want Direct Entry into Masters programs. I was going to apply next yr and last minute applied this yr, because I heard there is such a long wait list in MA for nursing schools. Every nurse I talked to said there is a demand in other states and cities, but not in Boston! It is quite competitive here for schools and jobs. In fact, some hospitals have hiring freezes and are laying off nurses! When I heard that, I said I better apply this yr and see what happens. So I rushed to get my GRE done and letters of rec. I am just starting these prereq sciences so I think everything will work out. Who knows? MGH could make my dreams come true and take me off that list!!! In the meantime, I heard it is great to gain more patient experience by volunteering at a hospital if you are on a wait list. Good luck and congrats!

I think your approach is excellent. You've been through the application wringer once, and now know exactly what to expect. That will give you an edge. The competition is fierce. I am seeing lots of 10% acceptance rates for various direct entry/accelerated programs posted here. As I recall, even Harvard undergraduate school has a higher acceptance rate. Anyhow, you can now devote more time to your science prerequisites, and work towards an A in each of them.

I volunteered in a local hospital emergency room for a year, and that helped me to focus my goal on nursing. It may have even had a marginal impact on my application. I am not really sure why I got into Simmons--my undergraduate GPA was sub-3.0, though it was in a difficult field. My pre-req grades were good, though. It's possible that my age, gender, and background combined were "different" enough that they decided to take a chance on the strange applicant parachuting in from Pluto.
