Is anyone else applying to the MGH Accelerated BSN program for Summer 2015? How is everyone feeling about it??

@ainyang6087. are you planning on applying to university of miami then?

Congrats to everyone who was accepted! I was accepted too :) I'm planning to attend another school so that will open up another spot on the wait list!

If anyone has questions about neighborhoods feel free to private message me. Depends on your budget, but there are a lot of nice areas out this way! I currently live in Mission Hill (very student oriented) but will be in Medford/Somerville area by the time school starts. Charlestown itself is very pricey - if you're looking to take out loans for school though you may be able to find a situation with another classmate that would make it affordable. I'd recommend looking in Mission Hill, Somerville, Medford, Malden, and Melrose (the last three are on the Orange Line which goes right to North Station too (shuttle from North Station to the school). Rent is going up all the time out this way so just start taking a look around on Craigslist to get an idea of what you'll be paying.

I am coming from Atlanta, GA, and I am 25. Its still surreal to me!!!!!

@ lagirl_1989 Coming from California as well, although northern. How are you getting out there? If you go that is.

@ SKay226 To answer your question about my background a few pages back, I graduated with my Bachelors in Kinesiology about a year and a half ago. I don't have any paid experience, but loads of volunteering and interning experience. I have a question regarding public transportation in Boston. I've never been, and was wondering how the public transit is. Is it reliable, quick, wide spread? Is a car a necessity? Thanks so much.

You do not need a car! I sold my Jeep when I moved here a few years ago. The more affordable areas within Boston rent wise seem to have very high car insurance rates. Depends on where you're coming from. When I moved here from western mass I experienced a lot of sticker shock because everything is cheaper there. I'd say to try to stick to the orange line if possible or green if you end up in Brighton or allston. I prefer the orange because its completely off roads. The green does go above ground and through streets where it has to stop at red lights etc. Definitely go to the mbta webpage and take a look at the lines. Also use Google maps transit option when you're looking at apts. Busses are everywhere too, I just prefer train.

Parking is also a pain most places and will cost you a lot through parking or tickets. Not worth it

Also through the school there may be discounts for t pass etc. A bus/train pass unlimited is 70$ month and may be closer to 50 if the school does the discoubt

@markrleon. i have a friend doing a residency at MGH. I was told a car is not necessary, but it is convenient to have one even though parking is expensive. My roots are in northern California actually. Did you apply to other California schools? When I visited the east coast, everyone could tell that I was from California, guess we're more relaxed. I'm still planning to move back to California, unless I get married in Boston or something haha. Are you attending MGH for sure?

@ SKay226, as for living situation, which area is safest for crime rate? Also, is there a Chinatown or Koreatown in Boston?

Most places are pretty safe. The neighborhoods are constantly getting more and more expensive and more students and young professionals are moving in. In the past mission hill may not have been safe, like 10 years ago or so...but now its perfectly fine. Same thing is happening with Dorchester on the red line.

The key to needing a car in my opinion is where your clinical are. There is also the commuter rail which goes into greater Boston and is pretty quick too, for those without cars.

People are very driven out here lol and most are terrible drivers.

@lagirl- there is a Chinatown...it is a stop on the orange line. Not sure if housing is really that good though. If you're looking for Asian community, good food (Korean plus) and affordable rent (with room mates) look in Allston! Lots of places to walk to and bars...very city feel with large student presence. Rent can be costly but it is everywhere out here. Safe area too.

@ SKay226. I was wondering about the chinatown and koreatown because I will definitely need groceries there. I'd much rather live near campus. I do not drive yet haha, but if I do have a car, is it common for a few people to share one?

I'm actually wondering whether we get to choose our clinical locations...
