Merritt College ADN Fall 2020

Published

Hello! I didn't see a forum for Fall 2020 applicants so I thought I'd start one. Good luck everyone ?

Just found this thread, and was wondering if anyone here who has accepted their spot in the Fall 2020 class has heard anything from the school about the orientation date and format. The handbook states it is on June 9th, but in an email correspondence with the admissions department they stated they would mail specifics at a later date as the orientation was no longer in person.

Hey! I emailed them today asking for specifics on orientation and the said they still don’t have a set date and that they’ll let us know once it’s decided ? LOL

Thanks for the response! If I hear anything from them myself I'll make sure to respond to this thread. Please let me know if they get back to you.

The same here, waiting to hear from them about the orientation specifics.

Hey I went to this program and would be happy to answer any questions with brutal honesty.

I just really want feedback from someone in the program. Years ago there was really bad comments about this program. Hopefully someone that has attended recently gives us some feedback.

This is a changeling program and at times it was harder than it needed to be. I personally regret going through this program and would never do it again. They make great nurses but I'm not sure it is worth it. I recommend going somewhere else if you can. The first 8 weeks is treated like boot camp and students get weeded out left and right (like getting into nursing school wasn't hard enough). Peds and pharm are the hardest classes, but med surg is no joke either. People make it through in 2 years, I did but not without developing emotional trauma. If you do decide to go here you need to have tough skin like if you joined the marines. I would also apply for other nursing programs for Fall 2021 that way if you get in and decide it isn't the right school for you or if you fail a class. you will not be behind a whole year. Failing a class means not advancing until you retake the class the next time it is offered, no matter what you will be behind a year. I would have left after the first semester but I missed all the deadlines for applying for a new school the following fall.

Thats crazy... LOL \: how did the teachers or instructors make it hard ? Also is there anything you think that would prepare someone going into the program ?

That’s crazy, I hope you pass and get through with the program thought. How do you think Merritt’s program compares to other CC ADN programs in the bay? Such as Ohlone, Chabot, CCSF, CCSM, if you know any of those..

A nursing school work load is huge and this goes for any program. I advise getting a few books not recommended on the curriculum like Saunders RN-NCLEX examination and a book like Fundamentals Success. Your grades are based on passing tests and you have to learn how to think in a specific way and fundamentals success really helped me start off on the right foot. Registered Nurse RN and Osmosis (there are more videos on the website than Youtube but you have to subscribe) will be your best friends. The best advice I can give you to succeed is to be curious and Google anything you don't know well enough to teach a lay person.

As for how the teachers make it hard is with all the extra work on of the normal reading and coursework. If the school is still online because of COVID19 it will be even more busy work. It always felt like most, not all, teachers assumed you were only in their class and had no other academic commitments. None of the busy work is graded but all of it is required and some of it took days to do. It was a huge time suck. On top of everything the teachers have the freedom to change class time or add extra classes if they didn't finish lecturing so that sucks if you have a job. They also get away with saying whatever they want. Sometimes they are outright bullies.

I have only talked to students at CCSF and LMC but they seem genuinely happier with their program. I honestly don't know how they compare. All I know is Merritt College makes one hell of a nurse out of you.

That’s good to know, I applied to Merritt this year but didn’t get in; oh well.. I actually got into CCSF’s Sprint 2021 program and am on the waitlist for Ohlone and CSM so looking forward to those.

Like you mentioned, I did hear Other people say Merritt’s program was really tough. Wonder how they ranked pretty good on the CA nursing programs list though ?

How was the group chosen for clinical? Is it assigned or do we choose? I’ve also heard that first semester was the hardest. Is that true? What was the most challenging part about the program for you? Thank you.
