Last Thursday I had my interview for a new grad internship. Friday I got the call. Today I went in to sign my offer letter. While I was in HR I decided it is good time for me to tell the recruiter of my planned honeymoon in Sept. She was very understanding but asked why I didn't disclose this info. during the interview.
Honestly, I didn't want that to count against me and I was just flat out nervous about it.
I told her today that I'm willing to post-pone my honey moon as I really, really, really, want this position.
Thank God I got the okay from the unit manager to take my honey moon and I don't have to reschedule it.
So my question is: When should someone bring up a planned vacation when starting a new job?
Nope no one wants to have off the 4 the to work Labor Day because people are gone or whatever. That doesn't seem weird to me. I wouldn't trade that lol and as the new person I'm already on Xmas. I'll keep working on people but I'm not holding my breath. That's just life. We don't always get what we want. I'll happily work any holiday someone else wants for me to get off just one day but if it doesn't happen I won't cry about it.
And yes same employer for the clinic and they often hire new grads into some areas. It doesn't seem that WI has been as hard hit by saturation so places hire new grads into most areas in hospitals or clinics.
Thank you KeepItReal and ChristineN.....Good points. I am definitely treading lightly on this one. I'd like to go into this with my eyes side open and my mouth zipped. Since the ticket is non-refundable it's mine and not going anywhere....so I am going to hope and pray that quite possibly I'll have a long weekend but I'm fully prepared to be home and miss the wedding. I will be honest here....I am more comfy with missing the family wedding than the possibility of a cancelled return flight (for whatever reason).
Whenever offered a position, the person usually has a few questions, seeking clarification regarding hours, unit, starting date etc. They want you, and it's time for a conversation.
What generally works best, is that as soon as an offer is made you say something like, "I'm really excited about coming to work there, and I have a few questions...I was planning to go out of town July 2-10, and I was wondering if I would still be able to do so. I understand that I probably won't get paid for the time, but I would really appreciate it if I could go."
Waiting until the last minute to ask often creates the feeling of being manipulated, and makes them wonder what other demands that person might make down the road.
Unless there is something specific going on at that time, they'll probably say yes.
The Mexican vacation will simply be the first of a few family events you will not be able to attend because of work.Doesn't sound like things would have been different even if you brought it up before hand. Would they have given you a later start date? If not you only had 2 choices:
1. Job, no vacation
2. Vacation, no job
It is unfortunate that you are missing the trip to Mexico. I would feel terrible too if it were me. I don't think you have a choice though. Many nurses are still searching for positions even a year out of school, myself included. The sad fact is, often opportunities come at a price. Even in school you probably had to miss out on parties and family time in order to graduate. If your sister is getting married over a weekend, and you can decide which days you can come in for orientation (if orientation is done as 12hr shifts) you may be able to make the wedding.

So if Labor Day is your first holiday to work then you have July 4th off right? Nobody would trade with you to be off the 4th in exchange for working Labor Day? Hell I'd do that in a New York minute. If nobody was enticed by the 4th, how bout offering up Thanksgiving or Christmas if you have one of those off. If you offered up on of those holidays you'd have people lining up around the block to work for you I'll bet. A sacrifice may need to be made but you can come up with an incentive package that will get someone to work Labor Day for you. Don't give up.
