im student nurse... and one topic that we came across today in class is " who is a better nurse? men or women?" ... is it really true when they say women are more caring than men? For nurses that have been in the profession in years, what do u think? ...

I think whoever is a better nurse, is a better nurse - regardless of gender.
who would you prefer to take care of you in the hospital... male/female?

I think the question itself is prejudiced, unelightened, and redundant. I am very surprised your school is encouraging gender wars in this way.
Nursing skills may have to do with what kind of person you are in many ways.
And what kind of person you are may have to do with your gender in many ways.
But to say that one gender is better than the other at anything (except writing their name in the snow ) is irrational and illogical. Holds us back from promoting what nursing REALLY is.
it wasnt part of the curriculum or anything... it was just a question that has been thrown out in class.
Still, didn't the instructor put a stop to it, then and there?
If I'd been the instructor, I would have turned the discussion around and talked about some of the gender-related politics that DO exist in nursing - prejudice against males who choose nursing as a career, for example.

Men and women are different yes, but neither are better than the other at nursing. I thought we were beyond all this?

From a patient perspective, I was in ER and had excellent, kind, caring male and female nurses! I think that regardless of gender, both go in to the nursing profession for one thing...to care, and care, they do!

Personally? I would prefer a NURSE and not some UAP to take care of me.

I don't think there is a comparison, a nurse is a nurse. Male....female.....alien......doesn't matter as long as they are a caring, competent, trustworthy, hardworking, physically capable individual they have my vote.
