Meeting AHPRA requirements as a International Trained Nurse from the Philippines

Hi. This may sound dumb but I sincerely want to know what are the possible outcomes of an application for general registration for international nurses in AHPRA? What to expect? Is it an eligibility letter? An advice on what to do before being able to register as nurse in Australia? What am I expecting to be sent to me? Or if refused, what does that mean?

I have visited the AHPRA website and was dumb-stricken as well by my question.

By the way, I am a Filipina registered nurse since 2011 based in Australia for now. I haven't pursued any education but has worked here as assistant in nursing. I also don't have any work experience as we moved months after I passed the Licensure Exam. Thank you for your patient reply.

If you have not worked as a Registered Nurse, for at least 3 months in the past 5 years (after 2 years since graduation you are not considered a new graduate) and since second year since graduation you cannot show that you have completed 20 hours of continuing professional development every year as a Registered Nurse, I doubt AHPRA will consider Registration by bridging program and you will need to apply to a university to complete a Bachelor of nursing, with credit of subjects from you overseas degree.

Working as an assistant will not be given any consideration, as there is vast difference working as an RN than giving personal care.

If you can afford it, put in an application to see where you stand with them though, that is the only way to know for sure. The letter probably will state that you must complete a BN in Australia before Registration would be considered.

You do not have to apply to a Ahpra, you can apply to a university and let them figure out just how many subjects you need to do before you would be awarded a BN, you would then be considered an Australian graduate Register direct with AHPRA and qualify to apply for graduate programs

Thanks for the insight! I have mailed AHPRA regarding my case but have only adviced me to undergo the assessment. I do not want to waste $380 for a refusal. Is an eligibility letter the aim of every applicant applying for general registration for internationally qualified nurses(AGOS 40)? If not, what else?

I honestly don't know what to expect from an AHPRA application.

Hi!

My case officer gave me 30 days to comply. All-in-all, my letter of eligibility was released on the 4th month from the date of lodgement in AHPRA-NSW. Just make sure you get "Course Description" not Course Syllabus. Filipino subject has to be translated in English.

Please bear with my question. Is the outcome of the AHPRA registration solely the eligibility letter? Is that the main outcome of an AHPRA application (supposing I am an international nurse applying for general registration for international nurses? Thank you!

No, you are applying in that form to be assessed and given Registration as an RN. Nurses from the Phillipines are often told in the decision letters sent to them by AHPRA after assessment that they are eligible to become Registered nurses only if they complete a bridging course first in the next 12 months. Many do, some do as I have advised you to do.

Nurses from the UK and the USA that fill out the form and have up todate clinical practice and have done their CPD yearly are told they can Register as nurse when they arrive personally at an AHPRA office to certify their identity.

Filipino nurses just named this assessment letter the 'eligibility' letter as without it they will not be accepted into the short bridging courses. As I said before, I doubt that you assessment letter will say you are eligible to become a Registered nurse with just a bridging course and they will advise you to do a Bachelor of nursing course, as you will probably get one year to 18 months off the course, as others have done wit credit from Philipines nursing degree.

you do not need to apply to AHPRA to do the university degree pathway.

No, I cannot afford to spend $380 to see how I'll go with my AHPRA Application. Hehe. I have e-mailed AHPRA again and hopefully, they will give a substantial reply with my query.

I actually thought of applying directly to a university and have my subjects credited or going back to the Philippines, get a year of experience as RN, then apply in AHPRA. The latter sounds a more viable option.

I do not want to be 'nosey' but airfares and living in the Phil's is that less expensive than the AHPRA assessments $380 and university few subjects ? as if you are PR you can defer the cost of going to university and eventually you are still going to have to pay for AHRA assessment plus the 10,000 ++++++ whatever the bridging courses are costing by then as you will still have a Philipines nursing degree!,!:down: Even if you manage to get 10 years of experience over there. :no:

I actually thank you for being "nosey" because that helps me weigh my thoughts. You have a point there! Hmm.

I quickly formulated a presumed finance breakdown: (If ever I have to study 1-2 or who knows 3 years in Au. Hopefully not 3 years)

$20-$30k+++ tuition fee (per academic year/term)

plus living expenses, etc

AHPRA: $380

Total: $20-30k(if 1 year)-$100k++

My finance breakdown: (If I go back to the Philippines for a year or two for work experience)

•$9h-2k per flight

•I am a frugal person. And still supported by parents. P10,000 at the most per month so that's $3k for a year, $6k for 2 years

•Bridging program $11-13k

•AHPRA $380

Total: >/

I will inquire in every university here and in AHPRA and ask people here as much as I can before I decide on anything.

Yes I have checked it. But some things confuse me.

  1. Who needs to sign my cv?
  2. What documents should be sent to them directly?

1. your nurse manager or HR manager can sign your CV.

2. if you look at the form, there's a paper clip icon on every section that needs to have attached documentation.

I received a statement today from bank that AHPRA already took 539 AUD from my application, it's been a month now since I lodged my application to AHPRA NSW. What are the chances that they will accept my application, or in case they refused are they going to refund it as early as possible? Im quite worried since it was a big amount of money for me. TIA!
