medsurg floor dealing strictly with psych patients

Published

I'm a new grad, about one month into the job search since passing my boards. I've been offered a position on a medsurg floor but all the patients are psych patients. I'm nervous this may be very challenging but also think it may be a great learning opportunity. I'm worried about not finding anything else, my dream is the ed but I know it's challenging for new grads. Should I just take what I can get??

Take what you can get, learn and then maybe in a year or two move on to what specialty you prefer. It's hard to get a job as a new grad. Med/surg is your foundation, start there first, even though psych is not your thing.

My thought would be that with your education and years of experience, they might think you cost too much - especially for someone that brings no medical experience to the table.

A floor like that would be great experience for whatever you want to do in the future. Nurses deal with psych issues and psych clients wherever they go, in every specialty, so that experience would be a plus for future employers. Also, you can never go wrong with basic med-surg experience. The combination would, I think, be a big advantage for whatever you chose to pursue going forward. Best wishes!

Thank you for the feedback.

What a great opportunity. You'll gain some experience in dealing with two specialties simultaneously (MS & Psych). You may discove that one of them is your nursing 'home'.

Congratulations on your new job
