Meds you hate to give....

Updated:   Published

What are the top medications that you hate to give and why?

Mine is Amphotericin B (called "Ampho-terrible" at my hospital).

Anything that can't mix with Normal Saline makes me nervous. It makes me wonder what's going to happen when it gets into the vein--isn't blood a fairly salty environment?

breathing treatments on alert patients.....ooooommmmmmmmggggggg...they can't talk b.c. they are breathing it in....their room is usually a thousand degrees....watching the lawrence welk show at full blast....and i always stand b.c. i feel lazy if i sit.....oooo the time just draaaaaaaaaaaaaags...

Thanks for the great tip on giving GT meds!

Also, there is a replacement for Mucomyst? What is it?

Thanks,

Oldiebutgoodie

The replacement is called Acetadote. Much easier to give and without the smell. I am trying to get our facility to put it on formulary.

Thanks for the link, Fluff. I was hoping, with eyes squeezed tight and fingers and toes crossed, that there was an alternative to forcing my 70 # LOLs to drink that whole gallon of stuff in 3 hours. :(

Anything that has anything to do with a bowel prep. (4 Dulcolax pills, Mag Citrate, NuLytely)

TPN... it has a funky smell, like saurkraut or something. If the stuff gets spilled, it smells up the whole unit.

Laxatives or any thing else that a person can go to the pharmacy and buy and take themselves.

Specializes in Cardiac Step Down, PICU.

Nitro paste...I try not to touch it ...it really gives me a pounding headache. It never fails that I have to put a patch on when I am really busy, skip the gloves...then grab the tube that the previous nurse gunked up without wiping it off:angryfire

Chickey:)

I work bone marrow transplant, and eventually all of our pt's are on ampho or abelcet. I, knock on wood, luckily have not had a pt react and chill with ampho. But the other night, one nurse had 3 of her 4 pt's chill and rigor with it. One of them even has a 1/2 way med added. An hour before he gets 50 benadryl IV, 100 solucortef IV and 650 tylenol po. Then 1/2 way through the ampho he gets an additional 25 benadryl iv and still chills/rigors. So, now I know if I ever have him, I think I may run it a bit slower than normal...don't know

Carboprost (Hemabate). Especially during a C-Section. I know that 99% of the time I will have to clean up a HUGE amount of poop!!!
