Medical school after nursing school ?

Published

Hi! I am a nursing student and very career-oriented. I have a long term goal of becoming a physician as I believe i have a potential to be a doctor. I am looking for as much guidance as possible. I intend on working as a nurse at the same time while in med school . first I want to know if it will be feasible ? also, what are the requirements for applying to a med school besides MCAT? I know it's not going to be an easy journey but i feel really motivated .

Thanks for the advice!

I have decided that I'm going to be a nurse practitioner instead of a physician now. 😊

If the medical model fits better get your BS in biology or chem (have always been told don't get a BS in "pre-med" get one in an actual science so you have a real fallback degree in case med school doesn't work out)

Just an FYI: there is no degree in "pre-med"; it's not a degree but a program track. Someone pre-med would be getting a degree in Biology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, or Biomedical Sciences, depending on the school's options and their own preference.

Becoming a nurse is the absolute worst round about way to become a doctor. Furthermore, you are going to have a terrible time convincing med school admins why you jumped ship from nursing.

The requirements are generally:

2 sem Gen Bio (not nursing pre-req bio)

2 sem Gen Chem (not nursing chem)

2 sem Organic Chem

2 sem Physics

1 sem Calc

and other miscellaneous classes depending on school

Working while in med school? Lol working while doing the pre reqs was hard enough.

I just finished nursing school I was accepted into UAB School of Medicine stop discouraging. UAB has one of the best medical schools in the US. It's a great decision I've been told it will be easier than nursing school..... chill dude

Ok c511 although I am a senior in high school this year I have had a campus tour and advisor session.

You are a senior in high school, but are saying now that you have FINISHED nursing school.... AND been accepted into medical school? But...if you are a senior in high school, you have not begun nursing school, let alone finished it, to have an undergraduate degree.....and therefore are in no position to have taken the MCATs and been eligible for medical school placement. All that is certainly a far cry from "having a campus tour and advisor session". Clarification, please?

Additionally, this poster has previously asked about getting into nursing programs with an ACT score below 20.... so I highly doubt they got the required 28 on the MCAT and the 30 on the ACT to get into UAB's early med school acceptance program. And a 20 or below on the ACT isn't getting anyone into 6-year med programs ANYWHERE. The BS is stinky on this one.

When someone says "below 20" they don't want to admit to how FAR below it actually is. Well, VERY unimpressive test scores certainly don't translate into college doors opening wide. Lies don't become reality if you simply pretend long enough.

Am also curious who on Earth would have "told" this clearly ill-equipped child that "one of the best medical schools in the country" would be easier than nursing school.

Seems there is teenager with pants on fire...

And minimums rarely make the cut nowadays, anyway. Considering the highly-competitive med school acceptance rates throughout the US, it's unlikely anyone would find minimum scores particularly useful on his/her application.

Off topic but my friend goes to Hofstra. Apparently, Pre-med is a degree there. I think it's Bachelors of Science in Pre-Medical Studies.

I find it weird. Aha.

It's like instead of saying I have a Bachelors of Science in Biology it's like I have a Pre-Med degree.

Very weird indeed! I've seen BS in Biomedical Studies, too, which we all know is a pre-med program that ends in a degree created for continuing on to med school, and is a combination of chem/bio anyway. Don't think Hofstra is doing them any favors by issuing a degree that is so specific as to be exclusionary for what the person might want to use it for if med school doesn't pan out, if you know what I mean.

Now that I'm thinking about it, this new kind of tweaking of degrees to be so very specific has happened with nursing, too: apparently one can receive an Associates in PRE-nursing. Yep, totally a waste of time, as it makes one eligible for....nothing. Not a guarantee of admission to a nursing program any more than someone who has taken the pre-requs but has no "degree" in them. Ineligible to take the NCLEX, as there is no clinical component.

But I guess if people really want a "pre-nursing" or "pre-med" degree, well....schools are happy to charge for the service! ;)

Those are all solid numbers, a 28 MCAT will get you into many med schools.

Fishy fishy.

My cousin was writing from my allnurses profile. Feel dumb yet I am in high school not him
