Specializes in Professor; HIV/AIDS clinical specialist.

I was promoted to full academic rank of professor in a medical school. I am looking for other APRNs who hold academic appointments in medical schools and participate in the training of medical students and residents as a clinically practicing NP.

Specializes in Nephrology, Cardiology, ER, ICU.

Wow - how awesome. What exactly are you teaching med students? Interested

Specializes in oncology.

In our local medical school, RNs, and NPs teach basic clinical skills like suture removal, dressing changes, etc. Our medical school also uses RNs and those from other disciplines to evaluate a medical students practice of therapeutic communication.

Not uncommon for CRNA's in university anesthesia departments to be granted associate professorship as an element of their employment.

That sounds amazing! Can you confirm associate vs assistant at employment? Do you know anyone that you might put me in touch with? Has anyone been promoted to professor? I hear comments like this all of the time but have yet to meet anyone and I am really looking to do that. Thanks.

Specializes in New Critical care NP, Critical care, Med-surg, LTC.

Two of my NP coworkers teach classes for the medical students. There are some regulatory requirements that NPs in our facility cannot precept interns directly, but we work together. I'm hoping that down the road I might have a similar opportunity. I think they are mostly involved with teaching first and second year medical students.

Specializes in Vascular Neurology and Neurocritical Care.

I've held an appointment at a medical school. Taught lecture in the classroom and also clinical teaching as well. It was very fun experience, but I was the only nurse faculty member. I taught in the same fashion as physician faculty in the phase 1 part of the curriculum, but did perceive my professional growth would be limited beyond the level of faculty, so I returned to Nursing education. I wanted to progress into leadership roles - and have now in nursing education - but this was not going to be permitted in the medical school. For example, to progress to Assistant or Associate Dean, all required an MD or DO degree. And I knew that I could do those administrative roles as well as anyone else, so I chose not to stay where I'd be hampered.

Best of luck to you

Specializes in Former NP now Internal medicine PGY-3.

I’ve seen a few mostly in very niche specialties (wound care, outpatient ortho to get injection numbers in, etc)

I am really looking for any nurse who has been promoted to a full academic rank as professor in the medical school before a nursing school.

I AM a full professor and was promoted as such in a major medical school which is indeed traditionally held for medical doctors. As I am working toward interdisciplinary training all around, it would be fantastic if I could find another nurse that has followed in my footsteps to collaborate. I'm batting zero still since my promotion in 2016.

You are a full professor at a medical school? Is this in the continental U.S? What are you teaching? I'm not sure how you obtained the position but I'm wondering if this is in line with ACGME regulations.
