Hello, Justlearning,

I think you mean "professional" or .;)

I use and have endorsed for years, Nurses Service Organization:

http://www.nso.com

You can go online and receive free quotes. There are other companies out there and others will come along and offer advice as well.

It's good to see you are wanting to protect yourself as much as possible.

protecting yourself is always a good idea

I have http://www.hpso.com/professional-liability-insurance/coverage-description.jsp?gclid=CJX_ltHtg5UCFQKaFQodxAurqg

it's about $75/year. I think that the employer's insurance will cover you, but it will cover the company FIRST--if they have to hang you out to save the company, you're hung!:sniff: .......:wink2:

They carry it on us at the hospital .....

Oh no, they carry the insurance on themselves. You will be the first limb sacrificed when a lawsuit comes to bear.

Like others have posted, go for NSO.

I think it's only $48 for the first year.

When I was in nursing school they told us we really would have no need to get it when we started working. When I started my first nursing job in June, my preceptor very strongly recommended that I do get insurance for myself. She said that she's never had to use hers but that she feels it's a must-have. So I went home and looked into it. For $48 for the year through NSO, it seems like it would be silly not to protect myself. So I immediately signed up.

I with the rest, carry your own. I also have used NSO for 27 years, never needed it but awfully glad its there.

I'm one of those nurses that stops at accidents, volunteers as the First Aider at Scout events (Boy & Girl), etc. My hospital surely isn't going to cover me on those days! And as an RN, we're held to a higher standard than other First Aide volunteers, despite the Good Samiritan type laws.

Thanks for all your help and info.

At our orientation someone asked this question and they were very honest.

The hospital's insurance will cover you as long as you follow policy EXACTLY.

Translation: If you make a mistake you are on your own.

It is also good to have to pay for legal counsel, should the need arise.

There are myths running around that you are more likely to get sued if you have . Keep in mind that there is no magical central database that attorney's can search to see if you even have it on yourself...as the hospital doesn't even have to know if you keep it for yourself.

We were also told by our hospital's legal counsel (and your state may be different...so don't quote me) that if an attorney asked you if you had liability insurance that you don't even have to answer the question.
