Medical College of Georgia- BSN Summer 2010

Hi, Just wondering if anyone has heard anything regarding acceptance?

Since it is a track program they will let you know what classes you register for every semester but with my experience they never actually registered you. Also, I could never go by the "schedule" listed in PULSE...I literally had to go on VISTA everyday and look at discussion boards, etc...to figure out where I was supposed to be and when. The first 2 weeks of class every semester always seemed hectic.

Do you know if they are having another tour? I tried to look on the website, but could only find open houses for those interested in applying.

for the tour

http://www.mcg.edu/tour/

go there, then at the very bottom of the list it will say "Prospective students are invited to sign up for a Closer-Look Tour of the campus." and click on it and you should be good to go! BUT, i feel like it was targeted for prospective students, not really if you already made it in. they didnt show much of the campus, just the student center/gym. they played a powerpoint and then you were put into groups according to major. THEN you got to ask questions. its not bad though

Rae30- so do you think were gonna have to sign up? im kinda confused! we havent gotten anything in the mail so i dunno what they want us to do!

You can also call the BSN department and they will give you a private tour. It has to be during the week, but it was really nice.

Csage1~Unless something has changed we registered ourselves every semester. I believe we got a groupwise email that let us know the course registration numbers (CRNS) for each class. You can call the BSN department and inquire about registration or they may give you more information at the open house in April

rae, you got me freaking out.

i didnt get an email! :( i guess the nursing dept will be getting a call for me monday!

what did your email say?

Don't freak out...I am about to graduate, I am just going off of what I remember when I first started. The following link is from the BSN handbook that lists the courses for each semester. http://www.mcg.edu/son/documents/BSN-webFA08.pdf If you are going to the Augusta campus these are the correct CRN numbers for the course. If you are in Athens they will be different. Hope this helps!

Good Luck! It is a lot of fun but also a lot of hard work!!

Thats so awesome that youre going to graduate!! What advice can you give us newbies?

-Manage your time well and remember to have some fun!

-If you're not used to using a planner you better get used to it!

-Take advantage of every opportunity in clinical and apply for an externship after your junior year.

-Utilize your faculty...they are there to help you and really want you to do great!

-Study, Study, Study

Let me know if you have anymore questions....You guys are in for a great ride! :yeah:

For new students:

I got an email saying to register now for summer classes. But I thought we had to wait for open house or orientation. What are yall doing?

Rae do you remember what you did?

I think I was told that we were going to get our schedules at orientation, but I could be confused. Maybe we'll just get something ABOUT our schedules like rae said. But don't worry about what the email said... I'm pretty sure that we all have holds on our record that prevent us from registering. Plus they wouldn't make us do any kind of registering all by ourselves like we're supposed to know exactly what to do or something.

rae- thanks for the advice! I was definitely thinking about being a nurse extern. are you doing that? if you are, how often do you/can you do it? and is it hard to juggle being an extern with school and studying?

Jsweat~

After your junior year you can apply for externships. I am doing mine at the downtown VA...it is called the VALOR program. It pays pretty well and it is a great learning opportunity. Basically you do 400 (40hrs/week for 10 weeks) hours over the summer. You don't have classes unless you choose to take your elective during the summer (which I suggest you do). I took an elective and managed 40 hours/week at the VA. My elective was 100% online and was pretty easy...it was the Death and Dying class. After you finish the 400 hours you have to wait until the fiscal year ends to see if there is money to continue your externship at a part-time capacity. Luckily the VALOR students were approved for an additional 400 hours each. They only let you work 20 hours/week when it goes to parttime~but it has been pretty difficult during the last semester because of practicum with MCG SON so I really haven't worked that much. Sometimes I will do 8-12 hrs/week at the VA.

I highly recommend the VA program...they only had 6 spots when I applied~2 in OR, 2 in ER, and 2 in ICU. I landed in ICU which is a wonderful unit! The program is pretty competitive...the nurse recruiter should come speak to your class right before your junior semester ends and pass out applications for those interested. She then calls and sets up interviews. You have to have a certain GPA and she will ask for letters of reference.

A lot of my classmates had jobs as PCTs...I think you can start applying for these after your first semester?? Not 100% sure on that...but I think they worked at least 8 hrs/week.

As for registering for your classes....you can go online and check your PULSE account to see if you have any holds~if you feel comfortable registering with those CRN's from the previous posted link then I don't think it will be a problem. I think I remember having some holds for a PPD and maybe the last series in my Hep B vaccination....I probably registered after open house~Don't worry you won't get left behind!
