med surg certification!

Published

Interested in completing med surg certification,

Heard about med surg review courses + different med surg review books.

Any experienced nurses on this wat books to use as a study material?

Is it very necessary to attend the review course?

I would like to know as well as I have my authority to schedule the exam and need to study for it. :) Good luck to us both!

Specializes in ICU.

I used the Springhouse Med/Surg Review. From what i remember it was a lot of pearls and review of basic concepts. Some people prefer Q&A type review books, some people also learn by lecture style review courses, so it's personal preference. The key is to just review. Some of the sr nurse thought it was silly for me to buy a book and review, they said the test was so easy for them. Well good for them, I had to review.

Good luck!

How many years of practice do you need to sit for this exam? Can LTC nursing count? BTW, how do you prove your years (hours) of practice?

You must practice as a full time RN in med surg for two years to sit for the exam. I'm not sure if LTC would count. My nurse manager had to prove my years experience.

My friend used the Springhouse Review, I used the one from the Academy of Med Surg Nurses webpage. I like mine because it was more of a "short and sweet" slide show just the facts type of thing. BTW, we both passed. :)

Thanks for the feedback,

Eligibility Criteria

All requirements must be completed prior to application for the examination.

Hold a current, active RN license in a state or territory of the United States or the

professional, legally recognized equivalent in another country

Have practiced the equivalent of two years full time as a registered nurse

Have a minimum of 2,000 hours of clinical practice in the specialty area of

medical-surgical nursing within the last three years

Have completed 30 hours of continuing education in medical-surgical nursing

within the last three years

oh no, something missing in my practice.

have not completed 30 hrs of continuing education in med surg nsg within last 3 yrs.

am i still eligible to write the med surg certification exam?

Specializes in pulm/cardiology pcu, surgical onc.

You do not need the 30 hrs of continuing ed to take the CMSRN. You just need 2 yrs practice and at least 2,000 hrs. This test is endorsed by the Academy of Med Surg Nurses and is the one I will sit for. The certification where you have to have 30 cont ed hrs is the RN-BC and endorsed by the ANCC. Two different tests to receive med-surg certification and both comparable. Hope this helps, it can be confusing.

Thanks for ya reply.

Google CMSRN and you will find the answers to your questions and guide you through the process.

Sorry for some reason I can't paste the exact address from my stupid phone.
