I know I have asked this before, but people change so fast on here I thought I would see what the response was like in 2006.
So, if you don't mind
1. How much to you make as MDS Co (or if you're a DON/ADON - how much is your MDS person paid). I make $21/Hr and thinking that is not enough!
2. What part of the country do you live in. I live in Indiana.
3. How much experience do you have w/ MDS. I have 6+ years.
Thank You

When I did this last year, I made $ 25.00 an hour in Colorado for full time; the company lacked benefits. I eventually quite the company because my check bounced.

Do you belong to AANAC.org? they have salary info for mds nurses.
Its been years since I was one, but I was making the same as the staff nurses. This was in PA.

I'm in central Illlinois and starting salary is $21/hr. I make 21.65, I believe. No decent insurance. I think that other MDS Coordinators in my area make less. I want to work as a regional MDS Coordinator or as a consultant. How does a person find those jobs?

I belong to AANAC and although I've heard them discuss salaries on the discussion group, I can't find any info on their website regarding salaries. I believe that we should make as much as the ADON, but I don't see that happening.
Try Monster.com for a job search.
Unfortunately when I have tried these salary sites, they don't give specific info regarding an MDS nurse. I believe this is a very unique specialty and it is hard to "fit it in" under a generic nursing label. This is the facilities money. I was able to show my employer that just for the month of February, I brought in $6500 additional $$ just by being extremely diligent of the new RUG catagories. THIS IS A ANNUAL PROFIT OF NEARLY $80,000 THAT IS THE RESULT OF JUST ME AND
MY WORK. My annual 3% raise will only be $1300 of that Now I realize this is my job and I really enjoy what I do, but as far as I am concerned this puts us on a level playing field with ADON/DON's. (Please don't flame me all you DON's/ADON's.)

I don't want to start any trouble but as the MDS coordinator you are only responsible for the MDSs..at least in my building this is the case. As the ADNS, I am responsible not only for the residents(142 of them), the staff, ALL the committee meetings, etc etc. I was the MDS person at my facility and as ADNS I have a huge increase in responsibility....not however, a huge increase in pay.
No troubles capecod... just a difference in opinions and that's all right. Of course we (meaning all MDS vs all DON"s/ADON's) have a difference of opinion. You guys have a tough job and I have filled in enough in these spots to understand this. But our job is tough too. A good solid MDS nurse keeps the facility stong financially and this is a HUGE responsibility. Just let those RUG scores fall and see if that isn't true. Also I am in charge of the entire medicare piece of the puzzle in my facility. I ensure that we are meeting all medicare guidelines, decide who still meets medicare eligibility, if nsg documentation is up to par (inserving when not) and am even required to review the UB92 prior to business office billing for any medicare services. But yet, my salary is nearly $8.00/Hr less than DON/ADON and in my opinion that ain't fair - that is to big of a gap.
I think our MDS nurse makes much more than $21/hr and I know she doesn't make $8/hr less than I do as the ADNS. We start the staff nurses - RN's _ at $23/hr and I know the MDS nurse is making more. I went from day supervisor to MDS nurse and didn't get any raise at all.

Not to be disagreeable, but I kind of think that all the staff is responsible for attaining higher reimbursement. At my facility, the nurses and nursing assistants, social workers therapy and dietitian ALL need to provide the care and documentation of such to give the RNAC the basis for her entries into the MDS! Also, the "profit" of the higher reimbursement actually goes toward the resident's care. Most of the time, the reimbursement doesn't even cover their doses of Epogen! So it's no lucrative, money making business, but rather adequate reimbursement for care that was provided (which costs money). And I think the RNAC should be well paid. Mine is worth her weight in gold!!!:kiss
