Hey ! I know im super early to make this thread for the MDE program at Columbia for the 2021 start year ? but I was wondering if there are any future nurses out there as eager as me to get started !!

I applied to 7 accelerated programs and so far have been rejected from 3 of them and waiting to hear back from 4. I’m feeling pretty discouraged about this whole process and am hoping to share my stats so that someone can provide insight on how I might improve my application next time around if need be.
I graduated from an ivy league in 2018 with an abysmal GPA of 2.77. I retook my prereqs at a community college and got As in all of them with the exception of Nutrition, which I got a B+ in during undergrad, so I didn’t retake it. Since graduation I have been working at a cancer hospital (so almost 3 years now).
If I don’t get in with this round of applications, is there anything anyone would suggest I can do to make myself a stronger applicant? ?
Any thoughts appreciated..thanks
Hii!
if you don’t mind me asking, what programs have you applied to!
are you applying to dual degree programs such as MDE/DNP? If so, what speciality? Because having experience in that specialty shows how interested you are!
Also do you have any research experience?

Well, there isn’t much to go by from the information you shared. They look at your volunteer experience too. It's not all based on grades since Columbia looks at applications holistically. They want to see if you are a well rounded applicant and all the experiences you’ve had that led you to this point in your life. They are also big on research! I mean, not everyone has research experience but if you do thats a major plus.

I was rejected from UNC, Stonybrook and Mercy. I'm waiting on Columbia, Pace, Duke and NYU.
I didn't apply to the MDE/DNP program because I wasn't sure which specialty I was interested in...
And no research experience ?

It sounds like you’ve done well with your prereqs! Maybe consider adding some volunteer experience and take the GRE, TEAS, or HESI. Also, since you’re done with your prereqs you could take classes like genetics, pharmacology, or something similar to further demonstrate your strength and improvement in your academic achievements. These are just some suggestions I’ve seen others mention. Also, try applying to schools that have a more holistic approach and no minimum GPA or ones that are 2.75 and up for undergrad.

I would def try to get some research and community experience! Is your degree in the sciences?

Based on their academic calendar there's an integration period for MDE students (basically what we all start with regardless if you applied just MDE or MDE/DNP) from May 3-June 7) and the official start date for the Summer term is June 7. This is the first term MDE students start at. Hope this helps! here's the link to their academic calendar: https://www.nursing.columbia.edu/students/academic-calendar

For starters, please do not give up! it's very easy to feel discouraged and I feel you because I've been there. I applied to only two schools the last cycle and got rejected from both. I was so sure of both my applications too but I was rejected. I'm in a similar situation as you. My GPA is below 3.0 from undergrad. The reasons for it I explained in my addendum. I'm a reapplicant to Columbia who was flat out denied last year. They were nice enough that when I requested feedback they gave it to me.
It sounds like you have already taken care of getting the grades you need. I second what everyone else is saying here, primarily getting more volunteer and research experience if you are able to.
In terms of the test - I advise you to take the TEAS vs the HESI. I've taken the HESI but based on my research these past two years applying to programs the TEAS is more standard now for ABSN programs which for me limited to where I could apply this year ( I also applied to 7 schools this year, 6 masters, 1 ABSN). I currently have 1 acceptance (to the ABSN program), 1 waitlist, and 2 rejections. During this cycle, I was able to focus on schools that did not require a standardized test since I didn't have time to take the TEAS. Taking the TEAS will widen your net by a lot should you have to reapply next year (crossing my fingers and hoping you don't tho!)
you got this and Good luck!! ❤️

forgot to add this paragraph (and for some reason allnurses isn't letting me edit my original post - sorry for the extra notification guys!
In addition to looking at schools that perform a holistic review, also reach out to schools you're interested in and ask if they can review your application even if it's below their GPA requirement. At the start of this cycle, I was discouraged by the GPA requirement for some of these schools I researched but when I emailed them and explained my situation they told me they would still look at it and consider me if I attached an addendum to my application. I'm currently waitlisted for one of those schools! I never in a million years would have either applied or imagined that I would be considered for the waitlist had I not reached out and applied.
Hey y’all! So glad I found this site !! I applied for the mde/DNP program for FNP and I have not gotten a decision yet so im glad I am not the only one.
I was wondering if everyone did the addendum and/or optional essay? My grades definitely fluctuated all throughout my undergrad but majority of it were C’s. Im not sure if addressing numerous C’s was the best thing to do since it wasn’t one time. So I didn’t do the addendum.
I would just like some feedback if anyone did those components! I feel like maybe doing those would have made a difference to my application ?
