MDE Columbia University 2021

Published

Hey ! I know im super early to make this thread for the MDE program at Columbia for the 2021 start year ? but I was wondering if there are any future nurses out there as eager as me to get started !!

I feel sorry for the CUSON admissions staff. I also feel bad for the applicants in admissions limbo. So much of this anxiety could be relieved by a straightforward email from CUSON regarding their admissions timeline. It is perplexing that they can't see that, and instead snap at folks who call, trying to get an update on admissions releases.

Apparently lots of us will have to give deposits to other programs before we hear back from CUSON, which puts us in a financially and ethically difficult position....but it seems unavoidable given the way admissions decisions are uncoordinated.

Hi,

This question is for current MDE students.  I applied for the MDE program but would like to continue on to receive a DNP after getting my masters. The CUSON website says that there is a seamless transition from the MDE to the DNP program.  Is this "seamless transition" just for students who applied for the MDE/DNP program.  If so, what would the process be for applying for a DNP while in the MDE program. Thank you in advance for your advice.

Current mde/DNP here! I’m sure this question has been answered already but if you’re not accepted into the DNP at the time of MDE admission there are opportunities to apply from within throughout the MDE year. You just have to be in good standing and there needs to be room in that cohort. You’d still be considered a seamless transition if you get in from the internal application. Hope this helps!

Has anyone talked to students who graduated from the MDE or MDE/DNP program? Im curious to know what they think of the program

My husband graduated from Columbia 1 year ago and he is very happy with the education level, the labs and simulations and preceptors following up on small groups. He mentioned that clinicals are also good and you really get to be hands on. He finished and got a job right of the bat with NYP as a PMHNP

You can also log on to your application and click "withdraw" as well. Give it some thought before you do though. Emotions are high right now, which is completely understandable.

Thank you. I don’t think I can wait until the end of the month when decisions are typically posted early February. They gave us false hope with these rounds because it does not allow us more time to commit to a school when we are waiting on them specifically. Anytime I reached out to them regarding decisions they told me early to mid February then told me we’ll get them by this Wednesday. Now all of a sudden we have to wait until the end of the month. I feel for them, I really do. I know they are stressed right now. But I think sending an email to us again like they did right before first rounds were out, would’ve made things less intense.

Hi everyone! Been reading this chat for the past few months and I just really felt as though I needed to say something about all of this. I just called the admissions office and the women I spoke with sounded VERY annoyed when I asked when I could expect to hear back about an admissions decision. She told me the end of the month, and when I asked if there would be an updated email sent out to this round of applicants informing them of this change, she said “listen, I don’t know. It could be this week, next week, end of the month, I don’t know, okay?” As an applicant who spent months working on this application, paid an application fee, and who would potentially be paying $100k+ in tuition to attend your institution, I’m baffled to say the least.

$250k!!

Yeah, I actually emailed (MODERATOR EDIT OF NAME) last week and told her to pull my app and to disregard my application. I do not think very highly of Columbia any longer, which is unfortunate considering they were my #1 school for the longest time. I decided to commit to Emory. In my opinion, they care more deeply for their students and the patient population in general.

Best of luck to all you beautiful souls! And remember, do not let any program dictate your success or your ability to thrive in this profession. You do not validation from anyone or anything. You will all be amazing NURSES!

I agree. I have been holding onto my acceptance but I am going to decline this weekend once I talk to a few people (mentors, family, etc). I think CU would be great, but personally the price tag is insane. And I'm just really hard up on money and the less loans the better. I think a DNP would be great later on, but damn, I'd rather try getting a future employer pay my DNP which is really really common. And for some reason, I don't like the fact that they didn't require real-time interviews but still ask for such a huge price tag. Though I get it, it's a really great school and arguably the best for DNP but maybe that's because it's the only ivy league that offers a direct entry DNP degree (unless I'm wrong) so there's no real competition. And of course, good luck to everyone who's going to attend this program - you all are smart AND lucky. I look forward to seeing everyone's journey continue on this thread!

Thanks for the post! Where are you choosing to go instead?

I, like most people here, am frustrated about the wait as well, but the end of the month is just one more week. We've waited this long, I think we can hold off a little longer. Honestly, who knows, maybe we can still get a response by the end of this week.

On another note, I applied last year and got waitlisted only to then find out that they would not be able to accept anyone off the waitlist due to the pandemic. So for me, I feel like I've been waiting over a year to hear back. I'm definitely looking forward to the day the wait is over.

Until then, let's continue to be positive, support each other, and hope for the best possible outcome for us all.

Hii! We’re they not accepting people off the waitlist strictly because of COVID or because the cohort was filled??

also did they ever mention when you would hear back if you were on the waitlist?

Last year, decisions were released on January 27 and those who were waitlisted were told we would hear back by mid March about the status of our application. That's pretty much when the city was shutdown due to the pandemic so we never heard anything, until April 27th when we were asked if we were still interested in attending. We heard back on 6/4 stating unfortunately they wouldn't be able to accept anyone off the waitlist.

I was given feedback about my application and offered the chance to roll over my 2020 application to 2021.

I think it was a combination of factors that prevented them from taking anyone off the waitlist.
