MDC *Generic F/T* Fall 2011 ;-D

U.S.A. Florida

hi and congrats to all of us! i made this thread so we could all exhange info for out ft cohort. that way we won't get mixed up with the other p/timers and ao track! congrats to them too!

for those who are just tuning in:

  • our orientation is july 18th, the ati assessment is july 19. mark your calendars!
  • we do need to get titers for 2 tb's, mmr, varicella and hep b is highly suggested! i think hep a too!
  • the program is 4 semesters. we graduate in december 2012!!!!!!:yeah::yeah::yeah:
  • we have to turn in all our paper work for orientation, which includes our drug screen, health record, background check(i think they receive this from the actually company though)
  • make your ati account!!! atitesting.com

what i have left to do:

  • get my drug screen and 2nd tb! should go tomorrow.
  • uhhh all my titers actually
  • my unform--although i've already gotten my skirt for clinicals (don't wear pants), i don't have the top or lab coat!!!
  • get my books-- i've gotten supplementals like an nclex book and stuff but not the actual texts.

what i have done to get ready:

  • i am going on a diet! healthy meals all day! i don't want to gain 10+ lbs--don't like the idea of being an unhealthy nurse lol
  • going over some, but not all a&p--mostly bones, muscles, heart, endocrine, and stuff like that.
  • cleaning out my room to make more space.
  • i got an extra desk--its big and spacious for those late night study sessions. i have another one but its small. mostly for the computer. but it has lots of shelves for my "enjoyment books".
  • i am cleaning my shelves(i have lots) and organizing the books by subject (anatomy, physio, patho, bio, chemistry, dictionaries, etc) and as time goes by, i'll put the nursing books as follows: (fundamentals, health assessments, pharmacology, patho, medsurge, specialties, references/dictionaries, review books)
  • i'm cleaning my filing cabinet out but i am making copies of all my important documents, including my health record incase mdc loses it, lol. so i'll have files for my health docs, extra copies of my other valuable docs(house docs, car docs, insurance etc), and drug screen results. i'm also going to keep file of my ap notes. this is all for simplicity!!!
  • i'm going to buy those under-bed storage bins to store my extras-- extra back packs, extra office supplies, and my sewing supplies(yes i love crafts)
  • make sure my dental appointments and my dog's shots are up to date!!!
  • i printed a ton of "grocery list/menu planner" sheets. i am going to put it on a magnetic clipboard and put it on my white board. every week or month i am going to pick out a day just for meal planning and grocery shopping. i am going to work it out so that the first semester i only have to go shopping twice a month. most of my meals, if they turn out alright lol, will be freezer meals.
  • i think i need to buy a mini freezer lol
  • i'm going to do all my fun stuff before school starts. i want to go to the zoo and see some museums and other geeky stuff with my mum. might not be able to for a while :crying2:

what other misc stuff are you doing to organize your life? i *love* organizing :redbeathe any tips would be great!!!!!can't wait :D :yeah::nurse::redbeathe:eek::p:rolleyes::D:clown:

Just an FYI on vitals. I was a little confused by how the lab instructor in my class explained patient body positioning for BP. It's completely outlined on page 104 in Nursing Interventions & Clinical Skills. Amongst other things, the patient's arm should be supported, and the legs should not be crossed because it alters the reading.

I can't find anything that tells us what we're supposed to read for Nursing Skills Lab. . . does anyone know where I should look for that?

Can anyone please post the chapters (Jarvis) from last week and this upcoming week for the assessment class (any instructor is fine). I'm in a overflow class and we don't have a syllabus. Thanks :)

Ch 6 for vital signs, and p 38-78 for next week

OK, thanks so much for the info. I didn't want to fall too far behind right away.

*whoops sorry, noticed I answered the wrong message, but don't know how to delete my post :o

I hope everyone's week is going well!!! I've come home exhausted every day for the last two days - I have all of my classes Tues. and Wed. so they are long days. I feel like such a wimp! :lol2: I guess I will adjust soon...........just some thoughts on the week so far....There's lots and lots to read, as expected :sstrs: ......The Fundamentals book pages are way too thin! arghh,,can't debind the book, but, I found awesome highlighters that don't bleed through! If you're interested, they are the Sharpies gel highlighters - I ordered them through amazon.com because they didn't have them at office max or depot when I went, but I bet they will order them for you if you can't find them either - they are totally worth it! They don't even show through the pages! :yeah:.....so far all my professors seem to be really cool :) yay! ..........I finally remembered to sign up with the nsna (national student nurses' association - $35 for the year....and to stick a pen light in my backpack and goggles in my nursing bag..... I feel so clumsy just taking blood pressure! Too many things to hold onto at once, plus listen too! Can't wait to feel like a practiced professional!........If I have to buy one more book this semester I think I will cry!:grn: .I've met some truly wonderful people in the program so far - hey, we're like family for the next 16 months, right? :rckn:..(and hopefully make friends that last a lifetime, if we're lucky :redbeathe) ....oh, and, duh, :smackingf I discovered that it's a whole lot smarter for me if I print out the powerpoints in the success center rather than waste my ink at home! I'm slow.....Those human body simulators are sooo totally cool! :yelclap: ..and last but not least,.I have resigned myself to doing so much less of this -- and so much more of this :throcomp: - lol....nah, just kidding....I hope...:clown:. Truly, you're a great bunch of peeps :loveya:! See ya!

Did you get other colors than yellow? And none of them bleed through? I definitely need those! Thanks for letting us know!:yeah: The highlighters I have go right through the page.

MDC Nursing has a few videos on iTunes also, including the "Student Success Series".

Yes - they have pink. That's what I've found so far :)

In the preface to the Assessment book (bottom of left column on p. xi) it mentions "Health Assessment Online" and then lists a whole bunch of stuff. I haven't been able to figure out how to access that. Is it somewhere on the Evolve site or is it another product altogether? Thanks and hope studying is going well for everyone. I am pretty far behind in the reading but decided to power through by skimming, lol.

Anyone needing a break from studying check out this cute

LOL SOOOO CUTE! Is that puppy for real!!! he looks like a plush!

Why do the Japanese have the cutest pets...

So true about the Japanese. I don't know what it is. I started watching Maru (the cat) videos a long time ago and got addicted. There is something about them that is very relaxing.
