MDC *Generic F/T* Fall 2011 ;-D

U.S.A. Florida

hi and congrats to all of us! i made this thread so we could all exhange info for out ft cohort. that way we won't get mixed up with the other p/timers and ao track! congrats to them too!

for those who are just tuning in:

  • our orientation is july 18th, the ati assessment is july 19. mark your calendars!
  • we do need to get titers for 2 tb's, mmr, varicella and hep b is highly suggested! i think hep a too!
  • the program is 4 semesters. we graduate in december 2012!!!!!!:yeah::yeah::yeah:
  • we have to turn in all our paper work for orientation, which includes our drug screen, health record, background check(i think they receive this from the actually company though)
  • make your ati account!!! atitesting.com

what i have left to do:

  • get my drug screen and 2nd tb! should go tomorrow.
  • uhhh all my titers actually
  • my unform--although i've already gotten my skirt for clinicals (don't wear pants), i don't have the top or lab coat!!!
  • get my books-- i've gotten supplementals like an nclex book and stuff but not the actual texts.

what i have done to get ready:

  • i am going on a diet! healthy meals all day! i don't want to gain 10+ lbs--don't like the idea of being an unhealthy nurse lol
  • going over some, but not all a&p--mostly bones, muscles, heart, endocrine, and stuff like that.
  • cleaning out my room to make more space.
  • i got an extra desk--its big and spacious for those late night study sessions. i have another one but its small. mostly for the computer. but it has lots of shelves for my "enjoyment books".
  • i am cleaning my shelves(i have lots) and organizing the books by subject (anatomy, physio, patho, bio, chemistry, dictionaries, etc) and as time goes by, i'll put the nursing books as follows: (fundamentals, health assessments, pharmacology, patho, medsurge, specialties, references/dictionaries, review books)
  • i'm cleaning my filing cabinet out but i am making copies of all my important documents, including my health record incase mdc loses it, lol. so i'll have files for my health docs, extra copies of my other valuable docs(house docs, car docs, insurance etc), and drug screen results. i'm also going to keep file of my ap notes. this is all for simplicity!!!
  • i'm going to buy those under-bed storage bins to store my extras-- extra back packs, extra office supplies, and my sewing supplies(yes i love crafts)
  • make sure my dental appointments and my dog's shots are up to date!!!
  • i printed a ton of "grocery list/menu planner" sheets. i am going to put it on a magnetic clipboard and put it on my white board. every week or month i am going to pick out a day just for meal planning and grocery shopping. i am going to work it out so that the first semester i only have to go shopping twice a month. most of my meals, if they turn out alright lol, will be freezer meals.
  • i think i need to buy a mini freezer lol
  • i'm going to do all my fun stuff before school starts. i want to go to the zoo and see some museums and other geeky stuff with my mum. might not be able to for a while :crying2:

what other misc stuff are you doing to organize your life? i *love* organizing :redbeathe any tips would be great!!!!!can't wait :D :yeah::nurse::redbeathe:eek::p:rolleyes::D:clown:

I'm at Homestead and have two classes with Professor Thomas tomorrow. I'm pretty nervous until we get into the swing of things. :uhoh3:

Oh yeah, that's right! I forgot :uhoh3: - crazy with nerves - lol. I feel the same way!! But, we will be fine. Tomorrow we will all be back online here and talking about our first day :) Good luck!

I hope everyone enjoyed their first day as much as I did! All that stress, and I am quite comfortable with our first two professors. I even purchased two uniform tops for 1/5 of the bookstore price.

I'm hoping tomorrow goes as smoothly as today did, and that I'm not jinxing anything (I'm Irish- we have to think about luck ;)

Today was my second day. It has been so fun so far. Lots of planning, organizing, and reading. Work is crazy so if I pass by you in the library w/o saying hi I am sorry!!!! LOL

But I am super content so far. Fundies is a lot of reading. It appears Health Assessment is just practice. Tomorrow I have my dosage calc class. Not looking forward to it, lol.

Friday is my skills lab. Anyone have any advice for skills lab?

See you around!

It has been fun!....I have pharm and math tomorrow morn, and Health Asses. tomorrow afternoon. Skills lab is more practice than theory, even though we have a book (at least for my prof. it is so). Practice taking respiration without making it look obvious that you're staring at someones chest! ahh, I can't really see the rising and falling with the breaths on everyone! (but blood pressure is fun, just takes practice and "focused" listening)..........and, I'm not looking forward to the math diagnostic test tomorrow though........argh! lol

Btw, where is the library?

I found the apothecary system very confusing, but

is a pretty good Youtube video on it.

PixieMom,

Did you have to bring your own blood pressure cuff? or are they supplied?

I'm unclear on this. My skills lab is Saturday (part-timer)

Don't worry, they are supplied. Even the stethoscopes are "double" scopes with two head pieces for you and a partner to listen and work together (and for your prof. to test you).

I hope everyone's week is going well!!! I've come home exhausted every day for the last two days - I have all of my classes Tues. and Wed. so they are long days. I feel like such a wimp! :lol2: I guess I will adjust soon...........just some thoughts on the week so far....There's lots and lots to read, as expected :sstrs: ......The Fundamentals book pages are way too thin! arghh,,can't debind the book, but, I found awesome highlighters that don't bleed through! If you're interested, they are the Sharpies gel highlighters - I ordered them through amazon.com because they didn't have them at office max or depot when I went, but I bet they will order them for you if you can't find them either - they are totally worth it! They don't even show through the pages! :yeah:.....so far all my professors seem to be really cool :) yay! ..........I finally remembered to sign up with the nsna (national student nurses' association - $35 for the year....and to stick a pen light in my backpack and goggles in my nursing bag..... I feel so clumsy just taking blood pressure! Too many things to hold onto at once, plus listen too! Can't wait to feel like a practiced professional!........If I have to buy one more book this semester I think I will cry!:grn: .I've met some truly wonderful people in the program so far - hey, we're like family for the next 16 months, right? :rckn:..(and hopefully make friends that last a lifetime, if we're lucky :redbeathe) ....oh, and, duh, :smackingf I discovered that it's a whole lot smarter for me if I print out the powerpoints in the success center rather than waste my ink at home! I'm slow.....Those human body simulators are sooo totally cool! :yelclap: ..and last but not least,.I have resigned myself to doing so much less of this -- and so much more of this :throcomp: - lol....nah, just kidding....I hope...:clown:. Truly, you're a great bunch of peeps :loveya:! See ya!

BTW guys if you are visually oriented, use the "Nursing Tutor" DVDs and The Physical Assessment DVDs in the Library. When I am on desk I use them and they are super awesome... especially when too tired to read =)

Ask to see the first DVD in the Nursing tutor set. It is Essential Concepts 1 and is about Infection Control, Immobility, Safety, etc.

I share your pain in the math....I too will have to study twice as hard. Thank you for the idea of the DVD's, I will definitely check them out!
