Hello all and Congratulations on your acceptance! :yeah:

I just wanted to start a new posting for everyone starting Spring 2011 at UMB/UMB Shady Grove for nursing school, all levels. Please post any questions/information that you wish to share here.

When i received my phone call this morning I was told that we all would be getting our letters and packets of information in the next week or two.

I am very excited to say the least. I am going to get working on getting my vaccine titers and looking into updating my CPR certification to the one needed for school. What all are you doing to get ready?

I already have a current CPR certification, but it says "CPR/AED for the professional rescuer" (it's from the American Red Cross). Is there one I need to get that just says "CPR for the professional rescuer" (no AED) that I need? Can't wait to start!

Congrats! That one is one of the two acceptable CPR certifications - just make sure it will not expire before the end of April and you won't need to deal with it for a while.

How much will in-state tuition (full time) be? The only site I found is the following:

I quickly added and got $5820ish NOT including the Clinical Hour fee, as I'm not sure how many clinical hours we will do. Does anyone have a more accurate number or a website with more summarized info?

I looked this up on their website this morning because I was wondering the same thing since I have taken classes. It says "Submit a copy of your CPR card Professional Rescuer (without automatic defibrillator) or Professional Healthcare Provider-level CPR certification. Certification should be taken no more than three months before the first day of class. Your certification must be current throughout your enrollment in the program."

Yes! The "without automatic defibrillator" statement really threw me off. But as Grey Lady said, it is one of the accepted CPR certifications, so I will just submit a copy of my card (once I get take a re-certification class) as soon as possible. This way, if there are any problems, I have time to fix it :)

On another note, I don't think I filled out an in-state tuition form, does any one know where to find such a form and if it is too late to turn it in?

Have I mentioned I'm so excited?

The form can be found here: http://nursing.umaryland.edu/sites/default/files/uploads/docs/student-forms/apply-in-state-status.pdf I think you were supposed to submit with the application, so I would call and ask where you need to send it.

I am so excited too!!! A little nervous because I am going to be working part-time too, and some of the posts have scared me. I worked 30 to 40 hours a week during my last two years for my first degree so I know I can balance things and I wont be working more than 20 hours this time. Just makes me nervous that everyone says it is almost impossible to do well if you work.

I dont have a site or anything to send you to, but I am budgeting to spend $14,000 on tuition, books, and parking each year. I would love to have a more accurate number! I have our budget done for the next two years, so the more accurate I can make it the better!

This question is directed @ Grey Lady, or anyone else on these forms who attends/attended UMB's BSN program.

In the beginning of this upcoming Feb. I am supposed to be in my good friend's wedding. Because of its location, in addition to being in the actually wedding party, I would need to miss class on Friday. I think I am just going to have to suck-it-up and back out of going to the wedding if we have class and hope to be eventually forgiven :confused:. But looking @ a previous post by a Shady Grove BSN student, I saw that Fridays are for clinicals, and am I correct when I say that clinicals don't start right away?

To the point: Can anyone confirm that clinicals are on Fridays for us @ Shady Grove.... and .... when do clinicals start (specific date if possible please)?

Is there anyway you can reduce your hours to between 8 and 16? 20 is actually a lot, especially your first semester. I hate to discourage you but I have seen many students attempt to work and go to school full time and it rarely works out well. It helps that you already have a degree and are accustomed to upper level academic work. But you are not accustomed to nursing school and if you look into nursing student experiences on this site and others you will find that it is way more work than other degree programs.

It is possible to reduce the hours. I would love to do 20 hours because I will then be paid half my salary and keep my benefits. Keeping health insurance and other stuff isnt essential because I can jump on my husbands, but I have a loan thing through my employer that I have to pay back if I dont keep my hours above 20.... I would love to not pay back that $12K and keep an income coming.... (that amount reduces each year I am there). We could swing me not working, its just hard for me to justify not working part-time financially, even if it means late nights and stress. Fortunately, I think it will be set up that I only go to the office one time per week and the rest of the hours will be when I can and remote. That should help I think. I think I will start it (if it gets approved by the higher ups) and then if I need to pull back on hours or quit I can do that. Maybe they wont approve the reduction to part-time and wont be an issue.... Either way I am so excited to be accepted and cant wait to start! Once I finish microbiology this semester I am going to review Human Anatomy.

Another question for you... We should receive the packets this week, correct? I havent received a call or packet yet, but my status is the provisional admit. Also, one more question, do you know when the Baltimore orientation is?

Packets will come after you have sent in your deposit and contract. I would bet a couple of weeks. Baltimore's Orientation is the week after ours - I think Tuesday and Wednesday or Wednesday and Thursday. And you are most welcome!
