University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB)-Spring 2011
Hi Grey Lady! I am getting worried that I have signed up for the wrong CPR class. I have signed up for The American Heart Associations "BLS for the HealthCare Provider". Is this the correct one? Thank you very much for helping all of us!

Towson University's Nursing Program
Hargrove86 - You're doing great! I am not an admissions counselor or anything, but I definitely have some input. I would think that anyting below a 3.5 raises a little red flag for committees accepting students, so the fact that you have above that probably automatically puts you in with the competition. From my experience and knowledge of what type of students are accepted, it seems as though nursing schools like well rounded, motivated students. You have knowledge of things outside of nursing and medicine and that will probably look great on your resume. You may want to consider volunteer work at a hospital, not only for building your resume, but also to have the opportunity to talk with nurses. Participating in something for a long period of time shows dedication, so be sure to talk about that if you have anything that fits that description. I think if you maintain your GPA (or don't let it slip much!!), you definitely are in the running for being accepted to Towson. I would also maybe consider looking into the BSN program at University of Maryland, Hopkins, Salisbury, etc. to broaden your horizon. Anyway, it seems as though you are on the right track. Good luck studying!

UMB Chemistry prerequisites??
jwrein12 - I am pretty sure that you would need the lower level chemistry before you took the intro to bio/orgo chem at ccbc anyway. If this is not the case, I don't belive the Intro to biochem/orgo Chem fulfills UMB's required prerequisite. I would definitely call UMB's admission specialist to confirm this (be ready with the course description from CCBC)...or talk to the nursing school admissions specialist at CCBC and see if he/she knows. Here is my opinion: It would not hurt to take both the regular chem AND the organic chemistry as long as you are confident you can get a good teacher and do well in both. Taking the organic chemistry will open up your options for which schools you could potentially attend.

UMB Spring 2011
To all of those still waiting.... The deposit for the BSN program is due Thursday for most students and I would bet that some will not pay on time or have accepted other offers already. Those few will probably be cut from the list by next week and more spots will open up for you! Best of luck.

Thanks so much! Do you know if that includes both full-time and part-time students?

[around] how many students are accepted into the BSN program each year? I am just curious to see how many students I will be graduating with in 2012.

Towson Nursing Program
@dlo2005 - Thanks! I'm really excited to start. You are correct - I did say that I was pre-med! I should have said that I know I would like to continue my education after I get my BSN, but I am not sure what route I will take yet. There are many options and I'm not sure if I am ready to dedicate so much of my life to learning about medicine via medical school, though it is appealing to think about learning about the body, medicine, etc so in depth. I didn't realize that Maryland potentially gives 10k to students just for working at their hospital, but that's one great incentive... I am fortunate enough to have taken classes that I ended up not needing for nursing school, so I only have a couple med school pre-requisites left if I decide to go. I ended up deciding to go to umb as well. That's a great point you made about making contacts with UMB's medical school if the programs work together in any way. I doubt that they do though, since nursing takes such a wholistic approad to nursing. I will definitely look into it though. Thanks so much!

How much will in-state tuition (full time) be? The only site I found is the following: http://www.fincsvc.umaryland.edu/sa/tuition.cfm I quickly added and got $5820ish NOT including the Clinical Hour fee, as I'm not sure how many clinical hours we will do. Does anyone have a more accurate number or a website with more summarized info? Thanks!

Congratulations, I also have been accepted to UMD! May I ask what pushed you to ultimately choose UMD over Towson's program?

:dncgbby: Congrats! Still "committee ready" here. Also, students who have been accepted should start a new thread for future discussions about class material, teachers, etc.

UMB Spring 2011
Thanks everyone for the awesome reassuring responses. I am really looking forward to attending a school that will challege me to learn to my full potential. I agree that it is necessary to have thorough teachers, especially in subjects that are more crucial to nursing. I surely would not want my well being to be in the hands of someone who slept through and didn't understand material in nursing school! I just needed a little reassurance that my determination and hard work will not be undermined by teachers, and from talking to other students in the program, it will not be. In retrospect, the teachers I had who have the most complaints on teacher-rating sites tend to be the teachers who I learned the most from. Thanks again, and good luck to those awaiting responses. : )

mlshulman711 - If I were you, I would look into community colleges that offer College Algebra over the 1 month long winter session. (CCBC, AACC, etc.)

UMB Spring 2011
Soooo I have been reading forums about UMD and talking to as many students as possible to see if this is really a school I want to go to... I am hearing that there are some "gatekeeper" teachers who are unneccesarily difficult and are not giving A's to students. Of course, I could be hearing this from the slackers who need to be "weeded out". I even looked into the possible teachers for Intro to Prof. Nursing (a first semester nursing school class) and unfortunately am reading not-so-nice things. Can someone please reassure me either that all schools have teachers like this or that UMD doesn't?

UMB Spring 2011
Hi everyone! We should be hearing our much anticipated results within the next 2 weeks! When I looked back at last year's thread, it seemed as though many applicants did not get results until after November 15th. Hopefully we will hear sooner :) Towson University has already sent acceptance/rejection letters and the $200 nonrefundable deposit is due by November 15. I find that the close proximity of the dates is causing me stress. Starving college students don't usually have an extra $200 laying around. ...... Happy waiting!
