MCG Clinical Nurse Leader - Fall 2010

Published

I have applied to MCG's MSN-CNL Program to start in Fall 2010, and I am wondering if current/past students could tell me when (as in what month) they received a phone call for an interview or acceptance/rejection letters.

Additionally, I applied to the Athens Campus program, so will the interview be held in Athens, or will I need to drive to Augusta? Thanks for helping me plan ahead :) I really hope I am the type of candidate they are looking for!

Hey guys :)

Shoes should be white, but some trim color is acceptable (jillibeeg-your shoes will be fine). Lots of students wear running shoes, some have danskos, nurse mates, etc (whatever you have make sure they are comfortable and remember leather is easier to keep clean :) ). In the later semesters you might be able to get away with more color, depending on your clinical instructor but I wouldn't push it right now.

Badges are available at the bookstore and I think they are about $5 apiece. If you have the money now, get 4 badges, 3 for scrub tops and one for lab coat (you'll have clinical 2xweek and Sim once a week so if you have 3 you won't have to wash clothes till the weekend).

We all got the lab coats like doctors and you don't have to get it at the bookstore. I like Hartley's Uniforms on Druid Park ave (off of Walton Way right before 15th Street if you are in Augusta) because you can try it on, they will order your size/style if it's not there, and though they aren't cheap there is a student discount. Most uniform stores will carry lab coats. I recommend going to a store over ordering from a book because you can try it on and find a good fit. Coats can cost $20-$40 and think mine was $30. The only thing that's the same about our coats is the color and most are mid-thigh length, (you don't have to get the same brand/style).

If you haven't started immunizations, start now. It takes forever to get all the hep Bs done and you have to be in the process of getting immunizations before they will clear you for registration.

I didn't buy a medical terminology book, just used the recommended site. In fact, most of us just printed off the pages and made a med terminology folder, you can make flashcards from there if you like that study style. The test was from the words on the site.

I bought the calculation book that they recommended (I posted that a page of two earlier). Learn the metric conversions if you don't know them already. That test was way easier than I thought it would be and didn't have any crazy scenarios. You will have calculations on every test you take, usually just 2-4 but they are good practice.

For patho prep, look over your A&P books if you still have them. You just want to have a good general understanding. I have to say that it would help to do this, but that I didn't do any of that and still did ok (if you say a B is ok, and I didn't kill myself getting it). Don't beat yourself up before school starts and try to have fun and enjoy the time off you have :)

Adriane82,

Thank you so much for you response! I actually received my packet today! I think it may have kind of gotten lost in the mail...I just moved a couple of weeks ago and it looks like the packet was mailed out on May 21st and I just now received it today. I have signed the sheet in the packet and enclosed a check for $100, I'm planning on mailing it tomorrow. I have got to get busy on my immunizations. So you don't have to get all of these necessarily if you had them as a child? Im glad you told me about GRITS b/c I would have had no idea where to find this information! :)

Hi ugadawg,

Most of the immunizations requested are childhood immunizations and/or are similar to what most undergraduate institutions required for enrollment. Almost everyone will need to go out and get a Tdap or booster tetorifice (form says it can't be older than 2 years) and everyone definitely needs the required titers (blood draw) and the required Matoux Skin Test/PPD. Just a tip, when you make your appt. be sure to tell the doctor's office that you need a PPD--these are placed under the skin and then have to be read within 48 to 72 hrs So...if you had a Thursday appt. say, and they weren't open on the weekend then you'd have to make an additional appt to get the PPD placed probably. Just trying to save everyone an extra copay :-)

I've edited this a million times - I am sorry. I have some silly vaccine questions:

- Am I supposed to have five doses of OPV? According to my paperwork, it seems like I had four.

- I think I read this earlier in the thread, but since I cannot find it now, I will ask - is having had chicken pox not good enough?

- The Hepatitis B section has two rows (Recombivax Hb or Engerix B hepatitis B) and (Twinrix combined hepatitis A and B vaccine). Do I only need one or the other (for a total of three) and NOT both lines (for a total of six)?

PS, My name isn't in the system yet, either. I hope they received my check in time.

Thank you so much for the tip Adriane82! I am going to try to contact UGA and get my past records that they have on file. And Chendamoni, those are not silly questions!! I just received my stuff yesterday and am planning on starting the shots Monday. I hope it's not too late. And about the deposit, to make you feel better I just put mine in the mail this morning (b/c I just received my packet yesterday), so if anybody has to worry about it not making it on time it's me :) Thanks for everyone's help so far!

Chenda-

If you look at page two of the vaccine form, Hep A is recommended but not required, therefore for page one you only need either the 3 doses of Hep B or you may have had the combined Hep A/Hep B but you wouldn't have both.

The old/outdated info. on the MCG website indicated that having chicken pox illness would suffice, but now I think it is updated and the form def. states that you have to have a varicella titer. I emailed Health Services to clarify and they said, yes, they require the titer.

As far as the OPV-I'd just ask the doctor when you go in to look over the form and ask what he/she thinks about it. I was born in 82 and the dates I had five: 1 in 1982, 2 in 1983, 1 in 1984, and 1 in 1987. Maybe the doctor can type up something or maybe he/she will tell you that it's OK to get the 5th dose of OPV now??

Don't worry. You'll be fine. As someone posted earlier, the main thing is you can show that you are in progress when school starts and then they can grant you an extension if needed to finish up the vaccinations.

Thanks, Adriane!

I went onto Amazon to get an idea of the price range of stethoscopes - they range from $5 to $150. What's a good price range for a beginning nurse? Does anyone have any brand recommendations? My first impression is that $5 sounds seems too low even for a beginning nurse, but I could be wrong!

I know the Litmann's are supposed to be good, I think they run around $75 bucks. I'm not sure if MCG recommends any certain kind... Does anyone know?

I have heard Littman's are really good as well. I went and looked at some today and they ranged from 85.00-115.00 but I think I will be able to find better deals on the internet.

GAmom: Sorry, I am still kind of confused by the scrub pants. Are all solid Navy blue Cherokee scrub sets acceptable? The whole no scrub pants on that sheet confused me..lol..Also, is there a specific location the MCG badges need to be placed on the scrubs and lab coat.

Thanks for all your help!!

JNP72388, the all navy Cherokee navy set would be great, and I totally agree that the sheet was confusing. I can guarantee that OM has had many calls in reference to the wording :) About the stethoscopes, I have a Littman (paid $70ish)nand really like it but the brand you get is a personal preference. I bought mine based on the quality and also the earpieces were very comfortable which was a priority for me as well (some earpieces are very painful!)

The patch placement wasn't super specific but since I'm a military dependent, I just took it on base and asked the ladies in the alteration department to sew it on. Some people sewed it, some ironed it, a few pinned it, and at least one put velcro on a patch so she could switch it between tops. The lady sewed my patches about 2 inches from the top of the shoulder seam and centered on the front/back seam. I don't know if I worded that well but I hope you get my point :)

Hey everyone. Check out www.allheart.com as a great place to order scrubs and supplies. They have rotating sales on different types of items. My boss (a physician) says he personally recommends Littman stethoscopes because it is easy to find replacement parts so you don't have to buy a whole new stethoscope if something wears out or breaks. He has had the same stethoscope that he got as a gift right when he started med school and has only occasionally had to replace a part through the years.

Also, I made a mention of this on another website's group page (are we allowed to say face book?) but...I called the school and the only place that sells the patches is the MCG bookstore in Augusta. They will do phone/credit orders for us satellite campus folks and will deliver either to your home address or to the SONAT to be picked up.

Hey I'm starting the CNL program in Augusta in the fall and I am looking for good, affordable places to live... does anyone have any suggestions? I know one other girl I am living with that will be in the program as well and we are looking for another roomate to live with. Let me know if anyone has any suggestions! Thanks so much!
